A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Bye Joey, Hi Joey

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins announced today that they have signed Joey Mormina to a professional tryout contract.*

Don’t remember the name? Let me enlighten you. Mormina was only one half of the best defensive pairing in the American Hockey League two years ago with Ben Lovejoy. He was a ridiculous +37 that year. Last year with the downtrodden Adirondack Phantoms, he posted career best totals of 5-18-23.

Is this a knee-jerk reaction to the iffy defensive play Saturday? Is it a shot across the bow of the SS Corey Potter and SS Steve Wagner? Is it the end of Drew Fata and Jason DeSantis’ playing days in Wilkes-Barre? Who knows. I guess we find out tomorrow.

Nothing from Bombulie yet. I am sure he’ll have something later. Check him out for his take. Also, it’d probably do you well to check out what Tim McManus’ reaction / analysis is on his blog covering the Adirondack Phantoms.

In other news, Wilkes-Barre shipped forward Joey Haddad and goaltender Mattias Modig to Wheeling of the ECHL. With how loaded the roster is with talent at forward / center, it does nothing for Haddad’s development to have him in a suit eating nachos and wandering the concourse on gamedays. For Modig, this is an interesting one since many have mentioned that it makes no sense for him to come all the way over from Europe to just play in the ECHL. I don’t know. I’m not paid to analyze.

Later, Jonathan Bombulie holds court with the booster club members. Check me out later for a summary of what JB had to say.

* – I don’t know why that link to the Mormina signing on the WBS Page takes you to the splash page. I linked straight to the article. It’s there, trust me.

HAHA. Oh man. Am I the only one who thinks Mormina looks SO goofy when he’s out there?

We’ll see how this ends up. I don’t know how much that year was him versus the people around him, but I’ll certainly take a plus/minus like that again. If he lies down to block a shot, the shooter automatically loses like 9 feet. Mormina is huge!

They’re giving out PTO’s like candy, hey? I would think he certainly beats out Fata for a spot. I don’t remember much about DeSantis, so I don’t know there.

he was paired with Fata today. but what to do with Sneep? I don’t see Wheeling as even an option if you want him to develop, guess we have some time cause according to JB Mormina won’t play tomorrow..question, can be bring that big +/- without Lovejoy on the other side?
