Chirps from Center Ice

The Penguins did not practice today but rather had a team golf event based off of Devin DiDiomete’s tweet. So there are not any updates at all today.

I wanted to examine some things in this very young season regardless. Namely, records in one goal games and records when 4 or more goals are scored. Bombulie already did half of my work for me in Sunday’s story in the Citizens Voice.

• The Penguins’ record last year was 59-21-0-1.
• Their record in one goal games last year was 24-9.
• Their record when scoring 4 or more goals was 39-3.

So far this year?

• Record in one goal games: 0-3.
• Record when scoring 4 or more goals: 1-2.

Does any of this mean anything in five weeks if the Penguins go 10-2? No. Probably not. But in contrast, five games in, not good.

Hopefully the ship is righted, and quick. I don’t think John Hynes has forgotten how to coach. I certainly don’t think Brad Thiessen has forgotten how to tend goal. Time will tell.
