A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Moving Day

Wilkes-Barre / Scranton made cuts today.

To Wheeling: Forwards: Denver Manderson and Christiaan Minella

Released: Forwards: Kyle Fletcher, Chaz Johnson, Patrick McGrath, Carter Rowney, C.J. Severyn, Cody Sylvester and Scott Zurevinski — Defensemen: Barry Goers, Mike Ratchuk, Clark Seymour and Alex Velischek — Goaltender: Andy Chiodo

Also, Jeff Deslauriers signed a 25 game PTO with Wilkes-Barre meaning that there is a high possibility that after not using more than two goaltenders all of last season, the Penguins could bring three goaltenders with them to Connecticut this weekend when they kick off the fifteenth season in Bridgeport.

EDIT: Just as I hit “Publish” on this post, Pittsburgh announced roster moves. They are:

— Andrew Ebbett and Simon Despres to WBS. Ebbett (and Chris Conner) both cleared waivers. Conner remains with Pittsburgh , for now
— Harrison Ruopp recalled to Pittsburgh.
— Beau Bennett sent to Wheeling.
— Derrick Pouliot returned to juniors.
— Kris Letang and Tomas Vokoun to injured reserve.

The Bennett move is just to get Pittsburgh cap compliant. Letang and Vokoun are legitimately injured. Derrick Pouliot is too young to play in the AHL so he had to go back to juniors. The Despres / Ruopp swap is interesting, but I think it will be just for a day so the Pens can get in under the salary cap. Tomorrow, you will see Bennett get called back up to Pittsburgh, Ruopp sent back to Wilkes-Barre and Despres called back up to Pittsburgh. I guess we will all find out together.

Make sure you check out the AHL Previews going on all week here on the blog. West Division and Midwest Division were today. North Division is tomorrow.

The Ruopp move was all about Cap calculus. He made the right amount of money (part of it Bonus so they could exceed the Cap ceiling) so that when they place Vokoun on LTIR they will get the entire $2M in Cap relief.

Once Vokoun is placed on LTIR Bennett will return to Pittsburgh and Conner and Ruopp will head down to the minors (though since he would be the 9th D in WBS Ruopp might wind up in Wheeling).

The question though is whether or not Despres stays in WBS. My assumption is that they plan for him to at least start there, because if they had planned to immediately recall him they would have just sent him to Wheeling with Bennett.

Supposedly they offered Kobasew a contract over the weekend, so they need to clear out 2 spaces (Conner and Ruopp) if they plan to add him and Bennett to the Pittsburgh roster. So the question becomes do they send Maatta back to the OHL and recall Despres (only to have to clear out another roster spot once Letang is healthy again), or do they keep Despres in the AHL and allow Maatta to get a few games in before Letang returns?

So it seems reasonable to assume that Despres won’t be back in Pittsburgh anytime soon. Of course there is also a pretty reliable rumour that Montreal has been inquiring about his availability, so a trade could be in the works anyway.
