They did it to Hershey last night, too.

After being down 1-0 to the Bears, the Crunch rattled off five straight to win 5-1. They came to Wilkes-Barre and found themselves down 2-0 at the end of the first and used the final 40 minutes to rally and beat the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins by the score of 3-2.

It was like water torture to an extent. You could see the lead dwindling away and the score was still 2-0 at the time. A Derrick Pouliot turnover at the midway point in the third put the Crunch ahead for good. Yanni Gourde scored two goals and Mike Angelidis the other.

Syracuse is a good team. The Penguins are too. You learn from this and become a better team for it.

Matt Murray vs. Kristers Gudlevskis

The Murray start is not surprising. Jeff Zatkoff is coming off of injury, and Murray has played well, so give him the start today while you maintain a healthy competition for who should be the number one guy in Wilkes-Barre.

Lineups were essentially unchanged from last night. Only Alex Boak took warmups and Adam Payerl did not. Scroll down to see who played where and on what line.

First Period: Pens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Conor Sheary shot a puck over a felled Gudlevskis for a 1-0 Penguins lead then Scott Wilson set up Andrew Ebbett on the power play with a great pass to make it 2-0. The goals came 1:05 apart.

But then, it seemed, the Penguins either stopped playing or slipped into neutral.

Second Period: Syracuse was buzzing all period. The Penguins only managed a shot on goal for a good portion of the opening of the period.

Then the turning point in my opinion. Gudlevskis stops both Bryan Rust and J-S Dea point blank. The Crunch then go the other way and score when a shot from the blue line is sent in softly towards Murray who’ drops the rebound right to Gourde who scored to make it 2-1.

The Penguins would weather the rest of the Syracuse storm and get out of the period up 2-1 heading into the….

Third Period: Gourde again on the power play. Set up on the near dot for a one time dart that Murrya had no chance on for a tie game. Penguins would get a power play but couldn’t score then Pouliot tries a home run clear from the corner right to a Syracuse stick. The puck end up in the net soon after when Mike Angelidis put it there. Pens would get another power play late but couldn’t score and then, with Murray pulled, couldn’t even set up for a shot at Gudlevskis.

To this point, the Penguins were undefeated when scoring a power play goal. That streak ended.

Around the Division: Hershey was off and the Bears have two games in hand on the Penguins….Binghamton loses in Norfolk 3-2 and Lehigh Valley beats Toronto 3-2.

Wow, all five Northeast Division teams are in the top eight and there is just one East Division team in the top eight. Yes, I know it only November and not Thanksgiving yet. But I like to pay attention to this stuff in November, because the points are the same now as they are in April.

Wheeling Update: The Nailers fall tonight in Indianapolis to the Indy Fuel by a score of 3-2. Eric Hartzell took the loss in net for the Nailers. Shavertown native Patrick McGrath scored his first ever ECHL goal tonight. Matia Marcantuoni and Zack Torquato both had assists.

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins have won four in a row and five straight at home after tonight’s 3-1 win against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

This one wasn’t easy. There were a boatload of penalties called both ways and the Penguins were flat most of the game. But they did have an ace in the hole. It was the man in goal, Jeff Zatkoff, making his first start for the Penguins in about three weeks. Zatkoff was sharp all night long and kept the Penguins in the game to the very end.

It was the aforementioned Jeff Zatkoff vs. Rob Zepp. Sorry I didn’t have a Led Zeppelin pun in my headline or no place else in this blog recap. I’ll try and do better the next time.

Adam Payerl participated in warmups but was scratches. Tom Kostopoulos is attending to a personal issue and is out the weekend. Barry Goers is cleared to play but with that Wilkes-Barre back six, good luck. Alex Boak is the extra man on D that was listed as a healthy. Nick Drazenovic is close but probably won’t play this weekend and Anton Zlobin is the longer of the two.

First Period: The Penguins were flat the entire first period. They managed to get on the board while on a five on three penalty when Andrew Ebbett threw a puck at Zepp which bounced right to Scott Wilson who roofed it to put the Pens on the board.

Let me use this space to say that referees Tim Mayer and Evgeny Romasko were downright awful tonight. At some point in a game there are going to be penalties. But to call nearly every infraction or near infraction is overkill and unnecessary. Look, it’s a tight game. There wasn’t a single fight the entire night, stay the hell out of the game with ticky-tack “roughing” calls while the play is going on (Dumoulin at 15:08 in the first) and concurrent interference and slashing calls (Megna and Robert Hagg at 16:46 of the third) – the ticket tonight said Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins vs. Lehigh Valley Phantoms, not, “The Tim and Evgeny Show.” If this was my first game I attended as a fan, I probably would never return. The referees downright ruined tonight’s game.

Alright. Enough griping about officiating.

Second Period: Really no flow to the period thanks to Tim and Evgeny, it was becoming clear that the Penguins were just flat and that the Phantoms were running into Jeff Zatkoff, who made dazzling save after dazzling save.

Third Period: A Brandon Manning laser while the Phantoms were on the power play (go figure) tied it at one. About six minutes later, Bryan Rust hits the post and follows his shot and eventually stuffs one past Zepp to put the Pens ahead 2-1. Later, with the Phantoms empty net, Bobby Farnham would feed Dominik Uher who hit the open net to ice it to make it 3-1.

Around the Division: Hershey gives up five unanswered goals to Syracuse and lose 5-1 in Central New York….Binghamton beats Norfolk by a score of 5-2.

Wheeling Update: The Nailers lost 6-3 to the Orlando Solar Bears tonight at home. Matia Marcantuoni had a goal and an assist and Nick D’Agostino had an assist as well. Marcantuoni was named third star of the game and ex-Penguin Denver Manderson had a goal for Orlando.
