AHL Power Rankings – Week 24

There’s a couple weeks left in the AHL season and a lot to be decided, so let’s get into this weeks rankings to try to sort things out.

No shakeup to the top three. Hey, consistency!

Here we go.

1. Colorado Eagles

Last Week: 1st (no change)
Record: 36-16-5-3

Opening up a bit of a lead on second place are the Eagles.

2. Laval Rocket

Last Week: 2nd (no change)
Record: 41-16-3-1

Eight point lead on the Amerks. An 8-1-1 run will do that.

3. Hershey Bears

Last Week: 3rd (no change)
Record: 38-16-6-1

Still comfortably at the top of the Atlantic. Bears have a pair of last place teams in the Islanders and a pair with the Comets this weekend.

4. Texas Stars

Last Week: 5th (up 1)
Record: 36-20-3

Stars are capitalizing on the Admirals rough trip through the Atlantic and are right at the top of the Central Division standings.

5. Providence Bruins

Last Week: 8th (up 3)
Record: 35-19-4-3

Bruins have been a peaks and valleys type team and we are at the top now after a good PA trip. Bruins head to Charlotte midweek.

6. Abbotsford Canucks

Last Week: 11th (up 5)
Record: 35-23-2-1

Canucks are on a seven game heater and up to third in the Pacific and within striking  distance for the division lead.

7. Charlotte Checkers

Last Week: 14th (up 7)
Record: 35-19-3-3

Neck and neck with the Penguins in the standings and wouldn’t you know it but the clubs meet this weekend in Charlotte.

8. San Jose Barracuda

Last Week: 16th (up 8)
Record: 31-21-4-4

Big matchup at home this weekend with Abbotsford.

9. Rochester Americans

Last Week: 4th (down 5)
Record: 36-18-3-3

Amerks are playing .500 hockey while the Rocket are running away with things.

10. Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Last Week: 7th (down 3)
Record: 35-18-7-1

Had a winning weekend overall but getting throttled 10-2 at home against a team you haven’t beaten there in years slides you back.

11. Ontario Reign

Last Week: 19th (up 8)
Record: 35-21-3-1

Reign are on the heels of the Eagles but are still trying to stave off the rest of the division, not far behind.

12. Syracuse Crunch

Last Week: 6th (down 6)
Record: 28-20-8-4

Split the weekend with a shutout in Allentown and a loss at home against Rochester. Home and home with Rochester this weekend.

13. Coachella Valley Firebirds

Last Week: 9th (down 4)
Record: 32-22-2-5

If the Firebirds aren’t careful, they are a road team in the First Round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

14. Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Last Week: 10th (down 4)
Record: 31-25-5-2

Phantoms look okay for now for a berth but have the most amount of games played in the division.

15. Calgary Wranglers

Last Week: 17th (up 2)
Record: 32-22-4-3

Doesn’t look like the Wranglers are going to win the division this season but discount this club at your peril.

16. Milwaukee Admirals

Last Week: 13th (down 3)
Record: 32-20-5-6

Trip to the Atlantic wasn’t exactly kind to the Admirals and that may cost them the division.

17. Rockford IceHogs

Last Week: 24th (up 7)
Record: 27-27-6-1

Sweep Grand Rapids at home, looking to chase down Chicago for fourth in the Central.

18. Toronto Marlies

Last Week: 18th (no change)
Record: 32-20-3-6

Marlies division leading visions of grandeur are probably out, but Toronto is still a solid playoff side.

19. Belleville Senators

Last Week: 12th (down 7)
Record: 29-22-4-4

Tough sledding schedule wise for the Senators who need points if they want a postseason berth.

20. Tucson Roadrunners

Last Week: 22nd (up 2)
Record: 29-26-3-2

Roadrunners were on the rise but a bucket of cold water in the form of a Colorado Eagles team cools them off.

21. Hartford Wolf Pack

Last Week: 29th (up 8)
Record: 27-29-5-2

Wolf Pack keep their faint playoff hopes alive this past weekend picking up a pair of wins over Hershey and Milwaukee.

22. Chicago Wolves

Last Week: 23rd (up 1)
Record: 30-26-3

Wolves have been in survival mode at the tail end of a seven game road trip.

23. Cleveland Monsters

Last Week: 25th (up 2)
Record: 29-21-5-5

It’s never good when everyone in your division is playing above .500 hockey and you aren’t.

24. San Diego Gulls

Last Week: 21st (down 3)
Record: 24-29-5-3

Split with the Silver Knights. Really wanted to see a sweep here if there was going to be a front runner out of the 9th and 10th place teams in the Pacific to make a push.

25. Henderson Silver Knights

Last Week: 28th (up 3)
Record: 26-32-3-1

Split a pair in San Diego which when you are battling that team for a possible playoff spot, ism’t very good.

26. Grand Rapids Griffins

Last Week: 20th (down 6)
Record: 32-24-4-2

Woof. Pair of losses in Rockford have the Griffins reeling.

27. Springfield Thunderbirds

Last Week: 15th (down 12)
Record: 30-26-2-4

Thunderbirds are winless in six games and may get caught by Hartford for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic.

28. Bakersfield Condors

Last Week: 26th (down 2)
Record: 26-24-6-3

Condors are sliding now and you don’t really want to be playing .500 hockey this far down the Pacific Division standings.

29. Manitoba Moose

Last Week: 27th (down 2)
Record: 22-34-2-3

Moose have three on the road this week, looking to upset some playoff apple carts.

30. Utica Comets

Last Week: 30th (no change)
Record: 24-28-5-2

All the Comets can do at this point is spoil seeding for the other teams in their division.

31. Iowa Wild

Last Week: 31st (no change)
Record: 22-32-4-1

Wild playing out the string, looking to play spoiler.

32. Bridgeport Islanders

Last Week: 32nd (no change)
Record: 14-41-4-3

Season is almost over for the Islanders, there’s that.

No change to the bottom three either, heh, although an argument could be made that the Wild should possibly be higher and Utica be last because the Islanders won Saturday over Springfield, but when you are this far down, does it really matter?

Have a good week, everyone!
