AHL Power Rankings: Week 17

We are officially at the All-Star break here in the AHL and there are teams that are solidly in contention, teams that have yet to make up their minds and teams that don’t seem like participating.

It’s never more apparent in this weeks version, as there have been no change in the top four teams from last week to this week.

Toronto is the class of the AHL at the break, and are just steamrolling teams.

Tucson continues to impress and are tops in the Pacific, but are being chased by a few good teams.

Wilkes-Barre seems to have worked out the bugs and are tops in the Atlantic.

A five game point streak by Utica has the Comets still in fourth. The Marlies should have company soon if the Comets continue this run.

The Chicago Wolves debut this week in the top five after splitting a pair with the Roadrunners.

Past the Wolves, click past the jump if you didn’t link in direct to see six and beyond.

Enjoy the all-star festivities if you are going this weekend!

AHL Power Rankings: Week 16

We are a week away from the All Star break, and things are slowly coming into focus as a lot of teams are hitting the halfway point of the American Hockey League season.

The class of the AHL so far has been Toronto, and despite a setback in Bridgeport Sunday, the Marlies remain the number one team in the Week 16 Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings.

The Pacific Division leading Tucson Roadrunners are in second, followed by the hard luck Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins who, despite being shutout in back to back games, only allows two goals all weekend by the opponent and still lead the Atlantic Division.

The Pens are followed in fourth by the pesky Utica Comets, who are pushing Syracuse for third place in the North.

Fifth place is home to your Providence Bruins, who thanks to back to back shutouts by Zane McIntyre Friday and Sunday, are back to second place in the Atlantic Division.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 15

The first full week of January is in the books and the AHL hit the halfway mark this past weekend as the positioning for the divisional races and top four are heating up.

Big shakeup this week in the Top 5. In fact, no one stayed where they were last week. Every team moved up or down this week.

The Toronto Marlies are back in the top spot this week after sweeping the Checkers in North Carolina and are 7-3 in their last ten.

The Syracuse Crunch jump up to the second spot in the Rankings, sweeping the Rochester Americans capping off a perfect week for the Crunch.

The Pacific Division leading Tucson Roadrunners are third, followed by the Atlantic Division leading Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, who have won seven straight.

The Grand Rapids Griffins round out the top five, the defending champions are not out of this thing yet and are not to be discounted.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 14

We are past the holidays and things are starting to get serious for teams as they begin the slow build towards the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs as we are now at Week 14 here in the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings.

Wouldn’t you know it, there is a new team at the top of the Rankings this week and they are the Rochester Americans. The Americans have been consistently the best team in the AHL for a while now. I remember the old NASCAR points scoring that awarded consistency. You didn’t have to win every week, but as long as you finished in the to five or top ten in each race, you would have a serious shot at a Championship. That is the Rochester Americans right now. They aren’t the best team in the AHL (that’s the Manitoba Moose) or even the best team in their division (that’s the Toronto Marlies) but Rochester has been nothing but consistent, and that is why they are the number one team this week looking to stay there a good while.

Manitoba didn’t drop far, they only fell to second after a hard charging Chicao Wolves team got them in overtime.

The aforementioned Wolves team is third and looking to chase down Manitoba for the top spot in the Central. Something which was unthinkable a few weeks ago.

Toronto leads the North and are in fourth followed by Tucson who lead the Pacific in fifth.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 12

Week 12 is in the books in the AHL and it’s a Christmas break and an early present for readers of the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings who debut on Christmas Eve instead of the Monday at 4 p.m. editions.

The Manitoba Moose remain the top team this week after a pair of impressive wins against the San Antonio Rampage. Right now, there is no stopping this team.

Rochester remains second and is a team you have to start taking seriously.

Up to third this week is the Atlantic Division leader Providence. There is a lot of in fighting in the Division for the spot that the P-Bruins occupy, but it’s the Bruins with clear sailing, for now.

Toronto jumps to fourth, after getting back on their winning ways.

A team that the Bruins may need to start to worry about is our fifth team, the Charlotte Checkers.

After the Checkers, hit the jump if you didn’t link in direct to see the remaining teams.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 11

We are at Week 11 in the AHL Power Rankings and a week away from the New Year.

Teams are jockeying for positioning as we head there. Others are establishing themselves as forces to be reckoned with while others are simply fading into obscurity.

This past weekend, the heavyweight matchup was the Manitoba Moose meeting up with the Toronto Marlies. It was billed as a test for the Moose heading into Toronto to take on an established Marlies team.

The Moose pass with flying colors and are again your number one team this week.

They are followed by a Rochester Americans team which you need to start taking seriously. The Texas Stars, slowly creeping into the top spot of the Pacific round out the top three. In fourth is the Atlantic Division leader Providence Bruins followed by the Marlies, who don’t fall too far because there aren’t that many teams that have won at least 20 games in the AHL just yet.

Hop past the Marlies if you didn’t link in direct to see where your favorite team ended up this week.
