For Springfield, this past Sunday at home vs. Adirondack, the Falcons won 4-0. Ex-Penguin captain Ryan Craig had a goal and goaltender Curtis McElhinney stopped all 31 shots he faced.

Record: For WBS: 0-1 (0 pts., 4th place East Division) — For SPR: 2-0 (4 pts., 1st place Northeast Division)

Why you should care: After a full week of practice the Penguins start a three games in three days weekend against a Springfield team looking to start 3-0 for the first time in club history. Should be a fun contest.

Last Game: This is the first regular season game for both teams.

Record: This is the first regular season game for both teams.

Why you should care: Three words: Hockey. Is. Back. Outside of that, the Penguins open the 2012-2013 campaign for the first time since their maiden season way back in 1999-2000. A much improved Binghamton Senators team awaits them, looking to start their season off on the right foot in front of a home crowd.

Dusting Off Familiar Categories…

Only because it’s out there, look for a more polished Rochester Americans lineup tonight and a more inexperienced Wilkes-Barre lineup.

Going off of these game notes and purely speculative on my part, it looks like Robert Bortuzzo, Simon Despres, Philippe Dupuis, Benn Ferriero, Warren Peters, Dylan Reese, Zach Sill, Trevor Smith, Brian Strait, Eric Tangradi and Keven Veilleux are scratched, as they don’t have numbers assigned.

I would think that Patrick Killeen gets the start and plays all of or a good chunk of tonight.

No radio coverage tonight and I am in Wilkes-Barre. Mike O’Brien is making the trip will be tweeting updates. I’ll run a brief post game recap here at games conclusion and likely tweet starting goalies and end of period scores.

And if you still don’t understand the title to this blog entry, the “Gameday” category is back! “Postgamer” will be around later tonight!

Last Game: Last night in St. John’s, the Penguins won 4-2 to force Game 7 tonight. Zach Sill had the go ahead goal and Brad Thiessen made 29 saves to be named first star. Derek Meech had an assist and was named third star of the game for the IceCaps.

What to Watch For: Both teams on the brink of elimination. Desperate, cautious hockey. Don’t be surprised if it ends a 1-0 score. Anything goes in a Game 7.

Last Game: Tuesday night at home, the Penguins extended their season when Simon Despres scored in double overtime. For the IceCaps, G Eddie Pasquale made 42 saves.

What to Watch For: The Penguins are going to need to continue to replicate the results of the last five games and hope that bounces go their way extending this series one more game to a seventh, where all bets are off. Don’t expect any lineup changes unless Brian Strait is ready to go. Expect another tight checking game as well.

Last Game: Sunday afternoon at home, the Penguins lost in overtime for the second time in as many nights, 3-2. Ben Maxwell scored the game winner just :27 into overtime.

What to Watch For: This series has been dead even. The Penguins need to have the edge at all times tonight because there is no tomorrow if there is error. A 1,000 mile journey begins with a single step…

Last Game: Tuesday in St. John’s, the Penguins won 3-1. Joey Mormina had a shorthanded goal and was named the first star of the game. Ben Maxwell scored the lone IceCaps goal.

What to Watch For: Pivotal Game 3 looming for both clubs with the series tied at a game a piece and the venue shifting to Wilkes-Barre. Both teams will be rested. Look for adjustments on the St. John’s side. Don’t expect of Brian Strait on defense. He didn’t skate yesterday and is still listed as day-to-day.
