After a 13 goal explosion in Bridgeport Sunday, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins needed to tighten things up.

Success defensively. They allowed the opponent, tonight it was the Providence Bruins, just one goal in regulation on a busted tic-tac-toe play on a power play.

But, the offense sputtered at times with Bruins starting goaltender Dan Vladar stymying the Penguins with save after save after save, until Sam Lafferty struck with under five minutes to play to tie the game to force overtime.

Overtime was run and gun, as you would expect when you remove two skaters and go three on three, and the Bruins strike on a power play goal and take a 2-1 overtime decision from the Penguins Friday night.

Baby steps. The Pens lost their two leading scorers in Zach Aston-Reese and Garrett Wilson to recall to a sputtering Pittsburgh Penguins team earlier in the week. Perhaps the best team for the Penguins to face was the last place in the Atlantic Providence Bruins.

Tristan Jarry opposed the aforementioned Vladar.

Lines were…

Lineup Notes: With Garrett Wilson and Zach Aston-Reese in Pittsburgh, the forward lines were shuffled top to bottom. Johnson-Grant-Hayes was a new top line….Jarrett Burton replaced Aston-Reese on the second line with Lafferty and Haggerty….DiPauli moves up to the third line w/ Blueger & Angelo and Ryan Horvat jumped back in and Ölund drops from 1C to 4C w/ Lindberg.

On defense, there were new defensive pairings there as well. Czuczman and Elliott; Summers / O’Neill and Abt (for Taylor) with Prow.

Injury wise, Nick Hart mentioned that Zach Trotman is week to week with a lower body injury.

First Period:  Penguins were aggressive off the hop on their first shift; Ryan Haggerty flipped a puck in from center ice, Sam Lafferty tracked it down from behind the net and centered to Haggerty who put a good shot on Vladar.

Wilkes-Barre would take an offensive zone penalty and the Providence power play made them pay on a nice tic-tac-toe scoring play that Martin Bakos finished that game the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Fitzgerald to Jan Kovar to Bakos for the goal. Pens lost a mini scrum along the near wall there. Fourth straight game where the opponent scores first.

The Pens weren’t able to score on a late power play and it was noted on the broadcast that the Bruins were perfect going into tonight’s game on opponents penalty kills at home (12/12) – the Pens had a few late looks but could not solve Vladar.

Second Period: No scoring in the period, but loads of action. Bruins started with some early action, then Anthony Angello was denied in the high slot via a glove save by Vladar.

Then Ryan Horvat was chasing down a puck that was dying on an icing call and hit Emil Johansson. The initial call was a boarding call, but Trent Frederic, who was wreaking shop on the Pens prior to this, took it upon himself to fight Horvat.

Frederic picked up an instigating minor, a fighting major and a ten minute misconduct.

More heavy pressure from both teams as the period winded down, but neither goaltender blinked. A goalie battle was a-bruin’ in Providence.

Third Period: If the Penguins would have scored on a power play here which would have been the first goal scored by a visiting team on a power play against the Bruins, that would have carried more headlines. Penguins had three chances and were not able to score.

Sam Lafferty stripped Wiley Sherman at his own blue line and scored to tie the game late.

Overtime: I think I will Periscope overtime road games as long as I am able, like I did here…

You will see there that the Penguins weren’t able to score on the carryover power play time and that Tobias Lindberg takes a cross checking call. Bruins head coach Jay Leach calls time out, Providence keeps it in and in and in on the power play before Ryan Fitzgerald or Cody Goloubef scored to give the Bruins the extra point.

Wheeling Update: Nailers crush Greenville in West Virginia 5-1. Renars Krastenbergs, Cam Brown and Troy Josephs were some of the goal scorers for the Nailers. Johnny Muse stopped 17 of 18.

I doubt Providence will have any highlights package, since they don’t even have a broadcaster, only one camera at the Dunkin Donuts Center and get by on the bare minimum as an AHL franchise. But if I see one, I will tweet it here.

Pens are staying in Providence till Tuesday. They are going to Hartford tomorrow. That Gameday setup will be here on the blog for you at 3 p.m. Saturday.

I said this in my Friday game recap after the first period of action against Hartford when it was 2-2 after 20 minutes of play…

Four goals in 10:50. The Penguins don’t like to play run and gun and would lose more than they would win playing that style, so the game at that point needed to slow down for success to occur.

An 8-5 setback in Bridgeport Sunday afternoon / evening. More like evening, despite the game ending at quarter to six on Sunday. It’s dark now. It didn’t start getting dark until 8:30 just a few weeks ago. Summer is a distant memory…

Anyway.

The run and gun style is not the style that the Penguins can play with any kind of success, they just don’t have the firepower up front to get it all to click at one time in one game. Sound Tigers go up 4-1 after the first Sunday, were up 7-1 at one point in the second period before the Penguins claw back in the third when the game was well decided.

Credit the Penguins for not giving up, not rolling over, not getting injured. They lost Zach Trotman at some point to an injury early in the second but ran out of time in trying to mount anything close to a comeback. It’s a weird game because the Penguins will win 90% of the games where they score at least five goals, but giving up four in the first to an opponent, facing a seven goal deficit to the opponent at some point in the game and no team anywhere is going to have success against their opponent.

So where do we go from here, 1-2 on the weekend? The start. The start for the Penguins both games Saturday and Sunday has been less than stellar. Nick Hart on radio hyped up the Penguins being, “ready” for the Sound Tigers and Ryan Haggerty talking about, “showtime” as he stepped off of the bus Sunday morning.

Haggerty was held without a point and was a -2.

But I am not picking on Haggerty. The Penguins simply were not ready to play today, down 3-0 before the half way point of the game. Anthony Peters got the start for Wilkes-Barre / Scranton but was relieved by Tristan Jarry in the second period onward. The Penguins are not going to want to have Jarry or Peters or whoever it is appear in three straight games back-to-back-to-back, The starts have been poor, (going down 2-0 in the first 12 minutes Saturday; the run and gun in the first Friday) and they need to improve, quickly.

Silver linings were Zach Aston-Reese’s hat trick and assist, Garrett Wilson’s three point (2-1) game and Ethan Prow’s three assist as Prow remains one of the best defensemen in the AHL. The Penguins connected on three power play goals.

Ask yourself this question. Would you rather lose 8-5 or win 8-5 but at some point cough up a six goal lead?

Before you start, yes, I know it’s John Fogerty. Work with me, people.

Steven Fogarty’s two goals tonight for the Hartford Wolf Pack and backup goaltender Marek Mazanec’s 35 save performance carry the Wolf Pack in a 3-2 win in Wilkes-Barre against the Penguins.

The Pens found themselves in penalty trouble again, giving up five chances to the visitors and getting scored on once, by Fogarty. It’s an area that they need to clean up and quick.

Another area to clean up is responding on back to back games. The Penguins are now 0-2-0-1 on games where they played the night before. Splitting weekend series is OK, but just OK. The Penguins are mired in the middle of the Atlantic Division now because if it.

No time to rest as the Penguins are right back at it Sunday afternoon in Bridgeport.

Notes: Stefan Elliott was in for Kevin Czuczman, the Penguins probably wanted to ease Czuczman back into things and not play him on back to backs and Jeff Taylor was in for Matt Abt. No changes up front to any of the forward lines.

Tristan Jarry appeared in his 100th AHL game for Wilkes-Barre tonight. He is the fourth goalie in Penguins history to match that feat.

First Period: :35 in, a slashing penalty was called on Thomas DiPauli and Fogarty bagged his first goal of the night on the power play with a back door tap in that gave the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead.

Penguins get it back late in the period as a puck stays onside and it put home by Ryan Haggerty to tie the game at one…

Second Period: Fogarty again. He led a two-on-one break while the teams were 4-on-4 and snapped a shot over Jarry’s glove to make it a 2-1 lead for Hartford.

Bobby Butler followed up about two and a half minutes later on a back door slam dunk goal that made it 3-1 Hartford.

Despite this, I had a feeling that the Penguins were still in it.

Third Period: …the Pens would have to kill separate tripping penalties by Sam Lafferty and Tobias Lindberg but couldn’t find the equalizing goal. Garrett Wilson came close, though…

With about 1:10 of 6-on-5 with Jarry pulled time to work with, the Penguins never found the equalizer.

Three Stars: 

Around the Division: Every team in the Atlantic Division faced off against the team they played Friday night. Those teams that lost on Friday all won on Saturday but for Charlotte, who is playing on a different planet right now as the first team to ten wins with a 3-2 win against the Providence Bruins. Bridgeport hands Springfield their first regulation loss of the season with a 5-2 decision…Rochester beats Hershey 4-1 and Lehigh Valley, who lost Friday in overtime to the Devils, get two late goals to tie then the overtime goal to win at home and repay the favor to defeat Binghamton 3-2.

Standings: Charlotte 20 – Springfield – 16 – Lehigh Valley 14 – Penguins 13 – Bridgeport, Hartford and Hershey all with 11 in that order – Providence 8

Wheeling Update: Nailers lose in their home opener against the Indy Fuel 5-3. John Muse was in net and took the loss. Troy Josephs had a pair of goals.

Got in my truck just in time to hear Penguins play by play man Nick Hart use the headline to tonight’s game recap describing Ethan Prow’s third period power play goal which stood up as the game winner for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, who defeat the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-3.

Prow also added two assists and is among league leaders in +/-. These two teams rematch Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre.

Tristan Jarry, who had an eventful night to say the least, opposed Dustin Tokarski.

Lines were…

Lineup Notes: The return of Ryan Haggerty, Jarrett Burton and Kevin Czuczman…

First Period: Four goals in the games first 10:50 made for a wild start to a Friday night home game.

Hartford connected :22 into a power play to open the scoring. Lias Andersson scored to give the Wolf Pack a 1-0 lead…

The Penguins would respond about three minutes later. A big hit by the returning Jarrett Burton, who I thought played a hell of a game on the fourth line, set up Tobias Lindberg here…

Collectively, I felt the fourth line played extremely well with Ölund centering Lindberg and Burton.

Penguins would score on a power play when Zach Aston-Reese put a shot on that Garrett Wilson deflected past Tokarski for a 2-1 Penguin lead…

But former All-Star John Gilmour would connect on another Hartford power play to even the game at two a piece.

Backing up, Sam Lafferty had a highlight reel, goal of the year candidate goal, that gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead. Just watch this…

Then, Lafferty put a shot on that was blocked on a Wilkes-Barre power play that Ethan Prow pounced on that gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead.

Ryan Haggerty laid a big hit on Libor Hajek that he had to fight Chris Bigras on and the Penguins were off to the races.

They couldn’t close it out when they had a :23 two man advantage, and then they let it slip a bit when Cole Schneider scored on an extended two man advantage for Hartford, that pulled the Wolf Pack to within one…

But the Penguins killed off the rest of the penalties (they did not have a good night overall, Hartford connected on three power play goals, but got the kill there) setting up Anthony Angello off of a face-off.

What a shot indeed.

Headline tonight doesn’t contain a pun. A run and gun affair in Hershey ends in a shootout loss for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. Something seemed off for the Penguins, who never trailed in the game, but never had more than a one goal lead in this Saturday night affair in Hershey.

Tristan Jarry appeared in net again for the Penguins in a back to back start and again was outstanding. Beat on a rim around and then shorthanded in the second and a blown assignment in the third. He opposed Ilya Samsonov, who won his first game in net for the Chocolate and White this season.

Penguins don’t score in the shootout round, Hershey elected to shoot first and scored in the top of the second and the third and take the extra point. Penguins lose 4-3.

Lines were…

Notes: No changes up front, same lineup as Friday at home. Will O’Neill returned and replaced Matt Abt. Ethan Prow and Jeff Taylor were paired up on defense.

First Period: :06 in, Liam O’Brien and Penguins captain Garrett Wilson dropped the gloves…

Tristan Jarry looked dialed in as he was Friday at home. He had a glove save on one of the thirteen shots on goal for the Bears in the period. Then Stefan Elliott fell down and Liam O’Brien had a chance at Jarry that he made a save on.

Zach Aston-Reese scored the only goal in the period when a puck found his stick in his own end, he took it out and scored with a Bears defenders stick in his skates…

Chris Summers took a puck to the face in the final minute…

…and was helped off.

Shots were 13-5 Bears heading into the…

Second Period: Chris Summers returned for the second period but at some point Sam Miletic was lost to injury.

In the first minute of the period, Bears went for a dump in and the puck took a funny bounce where Mike Sgarbossa deposited it into the empty net when Jarry came out to play it.

Penguins re-establish the lead when Teddy Blueger raced and collected a puck off the side wall, then went back to the slot and flipped a puck past Samsonov to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.

Penguins had two back to back power plays but they were a nightmare. So much so, that Hershey scored on one of them when Riley Barber snuck behind the Penguins defense and scored shorthanded.

Woof indeed, Taylor. Woof indeed.

Sam Miletic was injured in the second period. He was hit by Connor Hobbs. No penalty on the play. Here is the sequence…

Third Period: Adam Johnson found Ethan Prow for a wide open net off a nice pass that gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead.

But :51 later, Beck Malenstyn scored to tie the game again.

They lost him on defense, pass found him and connected.

Penguins had to kill a bunch of penalties which included a 5-on-3 against and got out of it. Tristan Jarry carried the Penguins to overtime.

Overtime: I Periscoped it. I remembered that I had that live streaming device and decided now was as good a time as ever to start a stream. Here it is, all 5:00, here for you.

If you didn’t click in and watch all eight minutes (there were stoppages) then you missed…

No scoring in overtime, so out was off to a shootout.

Shootout: Nothing doing in round one. Riley Barber went over Jarry’s glove in the top of the second, Jimmy Hayes was unsuccessful in his attempt and Shane Gersich scored in the top of the third to seal the extra point for Hershey.

That thing I talked about in the open? It could have been Sam Miletic who, it looks like, will be out for a bit.

Wheeling Update: The Nailers pick up their first win of the season with a 3-2 shootout win in Reading. Troy Josephs scored in regulation for the Nailers, he was assigned Saturday afternoon. John Muse picked up the win in his first regular season action of the season, stopping 37 of 39 and all four Royals shooters in the shootout.

Highlights: Hershey was the first, despite using the term I despise…

Penguins are off now until next Friday where they host the Hartford Wolf Pack for a pair of games next weekend on home ice before bussing to Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon. Tristan Jarry had that look tonight.

I could tell when he came out of his crease nonchalantly when the Penguins were on a power play here…

A confident goalie makes a move like that.

Jarry and the skaters ahead of him win tonight on home ice against the Hershey Bears who dressed a 100% max capacity lineup by a score of 4-1.

If you are Hershey starter Vitek Vanecek, those goals you gave up are goals that you want back. I don’t think any of the goals Wilkes-Barre scored tonight beat him clean. Vanecek was named AHL Player of the Week on Monday, by the way.

Notes: Anthony Angello was back and in for Tobias Lindberg. Ryan Horvat was in for Troy Josephs, Matt Abt for the suspended Will O’Neill on defense.

First Period: Anthony Angello scored shorthanded and beat Vanecek with this pretty shot.

What a shot.

Felt like Hershey had more shots in the period, but Wilkes-Barre led 10-6 on the shot board heading into the…

Second Period: Tristan Jarry continued to dial in, stopping a Brian Pinho shorthanded chance when Ethan Prow tried very hard to keep the puck in the zone on a power play.

Penguins double up on the scoreboard when Thomas DiPauli blows past Jonas Siegenthaler, puts a shot on that Vanecek saves but Adam Johnson was there for his first goal of the season…

Did Vanecek walk under any ladders on his way to the game today?

Right after they announced in house the weekly Player of the Week Award (it was Vanecek, the fans booed) Johnson did this…

Bar down and in. Faked a pass to Stefan Elliott which froze Vanecek.

Third Period: Wilkes-Barre was caught watching again in the slot and stone in the shoe Liam O’Brien scored in front to break up the Jarry shutout bid with this goal.

I was still planning on using some variation of “Bear in a Jar” regardless if Jarry got the shutout or not, so there.

Wilkes-Barre regains the three goal lead when Jim Hayes deflected a Matt Abt shot…

Game was speeding along, but hit snag after snag. As time started to dwindle, these two teams realized they were rivals and the hitting started picking up. Patrick McGrath pummeled Connor Hobbs in a fight at center ice. Game ended without further incident.

Around the Division: Charlotte improves to 7-1 with a 4-3 overtime win in Binghamton tonight. All the other slackers teams were off tonight which is rare for a Friday.

It’s good to see that there are teams out there that don’t lay down easy and pack up and call it an evening when they are faced with adversity.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms will be bussing to Bridgeport, Connecticut Saturday night into Sunday morning for an afternoon affair with the Sound Tigers. After going down 2-0 in the first period Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre, some players for the Phantoms could have packed it in, started conserving energy and coasting a bit for tomorrow’s game in Bridgeport.

But not Scott Gordon’s crew. Undeterred, the Phantoms would go on to outscore Wilkes-Barre 6-1 and turn what looked like a Phantoms rout into a Penguins rout. Lehigh Valley wins 6-3.

If Clark Donatelli is the coach I know him to be, this will be a teachable moment.

Anthony Peters opposed Alex Lyon. Tristan Jarry backed up, it may be time to get a look at what Johnny Muse can do for the Penguins in the pipes. That’s not a knock on either Jarry or Peters, Muse hasn’t played a regular season game yet for the Penguins and may be due.

First Period: In a period where the Penguins put up an eye popping 20 shots on goal, they would race out ahead of the Phantoms and took a 2-0 lead off the stick of Sam Miletic.

1:11 later, Mark Freidman goes bar down and in to cut the Penguins lead to one…

A quick start by Wilkes-Barre who were at time running around on the Phantoms but Friedman’s goal had them sticking around heading into the…

Second Period: German Rubtsov wrist shot beat Peters clean to tie the game for Lehigh Valley for exactly the answer the Phantoms were looking for coming out of the intermission…

In a game where few penalties were called (and none against the Phantoms) the last thing the you wanted to see was Lehigh Valley going on a power play.

:06 into a Teddy Blueger slashing penalty, Phil Varone scores to give the Phantoms a 3-2 lead…

Ethan Prow would answer 2:54 later on a shot from the point that floated through and in for a tie game.

But then the Penguins would get caught in a bad line change and German Rubtsov would score his second of the period and gave the Phantoms a lead they would never relinquish.

Third Period: Rout was on when Philippe Myers put a shot on that changed speed and direction and got past Peters for a 5-3 Lehigh Valley lead.

Woof indeed. 🐩

Lehigh Valley connects again on a power play when TJ Brennan finds Chris Conner backdoor to make it 6-3.

Two power plays that took :16 total. Price Chopper Market 32 in Kingston sponsors the Penguins penalty kill and Bobby Day never was able to get the sponsor read out. I’d be calling this week to get the money back on this one, but I just named them here. I shop there sometimes. It’s a nice grocery store. They have a seafood department, a butcher shop and a nice deli. You can always tell the quality of a grocery store by its deli.

Anyway.

After some rough stuff in the games final minute that saw Will O’Neill get assessed a game misconduct, a regular misconduct, a fighting major and an instigating minor, the game concluded without further incident.

Update: Lost among the madness is the fact that O’Neill did indeed receive an instigator penalty in the games final five minutes. That carries an automatic one game suspension with it unless it is rescinded. I don’t really see any reason for it to be taken off the board, so expect an announcement from the League Monday or Tuesday announcing that O’Neill is suspended for the next game which will be Friday at home against the Bears.

Around the Division: Don’t look now but Hershey collected 5 of 6 points this week and in turn hand Charlotte their first regulation loss of the season, beating the Checkers in shutout fashion 2-0. A 25 save shutout for Vitek Vanecek, who most assuredly you can expect first out of the tunnel at around 6:20 on Friday night in Wilkes-Barre….Springfield sweeps Laval 4-2…Toronto beats Hartford 3-2 and Providence beats up on Bridgeport 5-2.
