Weekend Preview – It’s Tight

Here’s a snapshot of the Atlantic Division Standings through Sunday, December 8.

2. PENGUINS – 19 GP – 25 points
3. Springfield – 22 GP – 25 points
4. Charlotte – 19 GP – 25 points

Yes. It’s tight. Really tight. And, oh by the way, the Penguins play both of these teams this week, Charlotte twice.

Music to Set the Mood…

Not really a country fan, but it kind of fits here.

A Quote…

I need some leg room here…
– Me, only every day.

Lots of tight spaces in cars, under tables, desks and my seat in Section 104.

The Setup…

Three game home stand with the Charlotte Checkers on Wednesday and Friday and then the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday, and a gripe about this weeks officiating assignments.

It’s an important week for all three teams, I would say more so the Pens and Checkers, because they play each other twice. And you can argue that the team that say, wins the week, will be in a good position to hold onto the second seed in the Atlantic and maybe, just maybe, pursue Hershey for the lead come January or so.

The Penguins got stomped by the two ursine named teams in the division in Hershey and Providence by a 6-1 score on Wednesday and a 5-0 score on Sunday. Both games stung. They looked great the Saturday before in Hershey and got smoked at home Wednesday against the Bears then get outshot 17-3 in the first period Sunday to a team playing their third game in as many days. It’s unacceptable. I told you Wednesday that Bears head coach Todd Nelson was incensed at his teams effort the Saturday prior to when they lost to the Penguins. Could the same be said about Kirk MacDonald? I have no idea but I guess the answer would be yes. Doesn’t show, though.

The Penguins did beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 6-2 on Saturday on the road scoring a pair of power play goals and a pair of shorthanded goals, so the bounce back after a bad loss is there, it would seem.

Charlotte split shutouts with the Rochester Americans at home last week and the Springfield Thunderbirds sweep the weekend with wins over the Bridgeport Islanders and Rockford IceHogs, both in overtime. The Thunderbirds are one of the hottest teams in the AHL, winning 8-1-1 in their last ten and winners of four straight.

Records

Should have gave those to you in the second paragraph, right? The Penguins are 12-6-1, the Checkers are 11-5-1-2 and the Thunderbirds are 12-9-1.

Who’s Up? Who’s Down? Who’s Out?

They just started to get healthy with Corey Andonovski back Sunday in Providence and then it was announced that Emil Bemström, Raivis Ansons and Jack St. Ivany were all out. St. Ivany is week to week and the other two are day to day. They lost Mac Hollowell and possibly Nikolai Knyzhov Sunday in Providence as well.

Defensemen Justin Lee and Mats Lindgren got the call from Wheeling on Tuesday.

The Roster Tracker has all the latest here.

What can we learn about the Penguins this week?

Oh boy.

How do they come out in the first ten minutes against Charlotte on Wednesday? If they are lifeless, the Checkers may bite them. Then the rematch Friday. Are they scrambling after a bad or close loss Wednesday or in their heads if they win Wednesday? Who knows when Springfield comes in Saturday. Springfield won’t be playing at all this week, so they will get the Penguins playing their third game in four nights while the Thunderbirds are fresh, likely bussing in on Friday.

If Kirk MacDonald is the guy I think he is after one quarter to play in this season, he holds guys accountable and there’s roster shuffling. Although with injuries starting to hit some guys that don’t deserve it may end up playing anyway.

But that’s why you have Wheeling.

Who’s in Goal?

Have to think Blomqvist – Larsson – Blomqvist this week for the Pens.

Ken Appleby and Cooper Black for the Checkers Wednesday – Friday and then Colten Ellis for Springfield Saturday.

You don’t really think the wrong goalie is in Wheeling, do you?

You are never going to find out what you have with Taylor Gauthier, who has been in the organization for years and won all sorts of awards in the ECHL last year or Sergei Murashov who was named ECHL Goalie of the Month of November if you keep them buried there.

It’s worth having the discussion. Yes, Filip Larsson has two shutouts, but hasn’t won since November 9.

That’s my only gripe with the team right now is that I have zero confidence in Filip Larsson at this time.

Who’s Running the Show?

Okay, so here’s the thing. There are 88 referees on the roster this season. We are getting referee Mike Sullivan again Wednesday with Rob Hennessey and Patrick Dapuzzo and J.P. Waleski on the lines. We had Sullivan up in Providence Sunday. Where’s the variety?

The real kick in the pants is that Jordan Deckard and Jarrett Burton are going to be here Friday with Ryan Jackson and Kirsten Welsh on the lines. Why is that bad? The same crew is assigned to the Springfield game Saturday. Yeah, all four.

There’s no sense in having 88 referees when you only see maybe a quarter of those. You gotta mix it up. Send some of those refs that only work Pacific Division teams East and vice versa.

Looking Ahead…

Toronto stops in Wednesday, a Friday off (nice) and then Leigh Valley home Saturday and then a 5 o’clock start in Hershey on Sunday.

Give us a bold prediction…

We all make dentist appointments next week after we grind our teeth to dust. Pens split with the Checkers and take the Thunderbirds to overtime and find a way to win. Everything stays tight a week before Christmas.

AHL Power Rankings — Week 9

It’s Hershey, again. It seems the Bears are inevitable.

Hershey sweeps the week and retakes the number one spot in the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings.

We will see if there is any steam to the jinx that I think I put on the number one team by making them number one. With Hershey though, I don’t think so.

Alright, enough bloviating, let’s go!

1. Hershey Bears

Last Week: 8th (up 7)
Record: 17-5-3

Whatever it was that bugged this team is out of their system. Bears sweep the week and are again the number one team in the Rankings.

2. Calgary Wranglers

Last Week: 4th (up 2)
Record: 17-5-1

Sorry Wranglers fans, but yeah, the East Coast bias is real. Hershey does indeed jump seven spots, over you despite you sweeping a game Tucson club which has been making noise of late. Lead the Pacific comfortably here in mid-December, but so does Hershey in the East.

3. Springfield Thunderbirds

Last Week: 7th (up 4)
Record: 12-9-1

8-1-1 in their last ten so a hot team including a four game win streak. I think they are the hottest team in the League right now. Five game road trip begins Saturday in Wilkes-Barre.

4. Belleville Senators

Last Week: 5th (up 1)
Record: 11-4-0-4

Sweep the Moose in Winnipeg and have won four in a row but the North is ultra competitive, so the B-Sens are fifth in the division. And no, I don’t know what my obsession is with this team is either.

5. San Jose Barracuda

Last Week: 12th (up 7)
Record: 14-6-0-1

Sweep the Firebirds and have some separation for second in the Pacific. One more with Coachella Valley then San Diego and Ontario kick off a five game road trip.

Where’s the Bear Spray? — Pens LOSE 5-0

          @

0                            5

Wilkes-Barre / Scranton has a consistency problem.

Explain to me how they get a pair of shorthanded and power play goals in Hartford, a competitive team, and then come to Providence, a team in seventh place and lose 5-0.

I think it’s a consistency problem. Players get too high into their heads and think they are gods gift to the AHL. But that’s just the thing, it’s the AHL. Things change, often. Your best yesterday isn’t going to measure up on most nights the next day.

Maybe Todd Nelson in Hershey is onto something. Every day might be the Super Bowl.

I started to write the Weekend Preview during the third period of this game, and the Penguins have Charlotte in for a pair this week and Springfield, probably the hottest team in the Conference right now. All teams have 25 points. But that’s for Wednesday…

Here’s how they lined up….

Lineup Notes: Corey Andonovski returned from injury and Marc Johnstone were back in the lineup for Emil Bemström and Raivis Ansons up front. Bemstrom and Ansons are day to day with upper body injuries. I recall seeing Bemstrom crash hard in front of the net in Hartford, but he shook it off and continued. Isaac Belliveau was in for Jack St. Ivany who was listed as week to week with an upper body injury.

So just as they were starting to get healthy-ish, they lose three guys to injury.

First Period: So Providence was playing in their third game in as many nights and started this four and a half hours away in Utica, NY. You wouldn’t know it after watching the first period.

The Bruins outshot the Penguins 17-3 in the period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission when a Vinnie Letteri shot was tipped in by Georgii Merkulov.

On top of that, Mac Hollowell may have been lost to injury as well.

Second Period: So they were only down 1-0 to start the period, manageable, have been there before, but the bottom fell out.

Penguins had a power play, but Jeff Viel steals a puck, dances in and scores shorthanded to make it 2-0 Providence.

Wilkes-Barre were getting some looks, but Brandon Bussi was getting some lucky bounces and making the saves.

Bruins get a power play and seconds in, a shot from the point by Vinni Letteri hits the low post and dinks in to make it a triple for the Bruins.

Matthew Poitras would make it 4-0 here…

I don’t want to pick on the guy and I may be ranting ere, but I feel like the wrong guy is in Wheeling. Sure, the Penguins did Filip Larsson no favors by letting Providence outshoot them 17-3 in the first period, but it was a 1-0 deficit. To give up a shorthanded goal, a fluke goal and then a shot that you probably could make a save on doesn’t seem great.

Does Blomqvist make those saves? Does Sergei Murashov? I have no idea. But if hockey is a team effort they all needed to be better and you could say the same about the goaltender.

Third Period: Kirk MacDonald tried something unorthodox and pulled Larsson for an extra man when the Penguins had essentially a 6 on 3. It didn’t work, but I like the innovation.

Penguins, down four, gave the Bruins a pair of back to back power plays and the Bruins connect when Brett Harrison scores to make it five.

The Penguins may have lost Nikolai Knyzhov late to an injury when he was banged hard near the Penguins game late. With the game a blowout and under two minutes, he didn’t return.

Three Stars: 3) Matthew Poitras (goal, assist) 2) Brandon Bussi (21 saves) 1) Vinni Letteri

The Good: If you can’t say something nice….

The Bad: …don’t say anything at all.

Turning Point: I think the goal that went off the post in the second that made it 3-0 should get it here. Perhaps the Viel shorthanded goal. Take your pick.

Around the Division: One other game, Hershey hosting Lehigh Valley, but that starts late on these Sundays and is still in action as this is going up. Box here.

Standings: I don’t know if I will be back around for an edit later, so the Penguins will stay in second place, for now, with 25 points. A three way tie with the Checkers and a suddenly surging Springfield Thunderbirds team. Wednesday’s matchup with the Checkers looms large.

Wheeling Update: Nailers started an hour later than the Penguins, hosting the Reading Royals. If Wilkes-Barre is indeed seriously banged up, look for some recalls from the Nailers this week. Box on that Nailers / Royals game is here.

Video Highlights: Hard pass on the search for this one.

Power Rankings Monday, Weekend Preview setting up the pair with the Checkers and Thunderbirds this Wednesday. Talk to you then.

Let’s Go Pens!

Special Team Mastery — Pens WIN 6-2

          @

6                            2

After getting pasted by their blood rival and the reigning back-to-back Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears on Wednesday, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins complete a masterclass of a game on all sides of strategy and win 6-2 in Hartford Saturday night.

They scored a pair of power play goals and two shorthanded goals. Now yeah, one of them was on an empty net, but the fact remains that the special teams was on point, and it feels good to be on the winning side of a game where special teams carries the day.

Here’s how they lined up…

Hartford didn’t and doesn’t post lines.

Lineup Notes: Raivis Ansons in for Marc Johnstone up front. No changes on defense.

Wheeling Transactions: Justin Lee was sent down to the Nailers and G Jaxon Castor was called up and signed to a PTO. The ECHL has weird roster rules. Castor is here kind of in storage, there’s no injury to any goaltenders, just the Nailers needed to make a move and that was the move.

Don’t ask me to explain ECHL roster rules.

First Period: Penguins had a sluggish start Wednesday at home against the Hershey Bears, but that was not the case at all in the first period in Hartford.

Valtteri Puustinen scored a pair of power play goals and Joona Koppanen scored with. :14 left after a shot from Nikolai Knyzhov was blocked, rebound back to him, shot again and tipped in by Koppanen.

Here’s the goals…

Tristan Broz is the Penguins best player right now. Go back and watch that second goal and that touch Broz had on the pass to Puustinen for the goal.

Shots were 12-8 for the Penguins heading into the…

Second Period: Hartford would find the back of the net and the teddy bears would fly as it was their Teddy Bear Toss night. Bryce McConnell-Barker would score and the fur flew.

After the short break to clean up the teddy bears, the Penguins would score their third period play goal of the evening when Vasily Ponomarev would score that made it 4-1.

Nice hand / eye coordination there.

Then Hartford would find t themselves on 1:50 of two man advantage time and they would connect for a goal when Jake Leschyshyn scored to cut the Penguins lead in half.

Wolf Pack would outshoot the Penguins 11-5 in the period. The Penguins, despite scoring a power play goal in the period, were a bit on their heels in that frame.

Third Period: Hartford had a golden opportunity to get back into the game when ex-Wolf Packer Mac Hollowell was called for a double minor for roughing. Hartford power play.

Here comes Vasily Ponomarev…

And off the rush as well. They were dogged on the puck all night, especially on the special teams.

The Penguins had a power play late but couldn’t score.

Hartford had desperation set in and were on the power play late but Ponomarev scored on the empty net left by Louis Domingue and scored his hat trick.

Seems like a cheap way to get the second shorthanded goal of the night as well as a hat trick, but as I stated at the top, it’s a good feeling being in the winning side of a game like this.

Three Stars: 3) Filip Kral (three assists) 2) Valtteri Puustinen (two goals, assist) 1) Vasily Ponomarev (three goals, assist)

The Good: Just a complete domination on special teams for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins Saturday, getting four goals.

The Bad: I didn’t particularly like their second period effort, but the special teams get them across the line Saturday and that’s all that matters.

Turning Point: Ponomarev’s first shorthanded goal in the third period iced this for the. Penguins. If the Wolf Pack score to make it 4-3, it’s a different ballgame and the momentum begins to shift. It didn’t happen thanks to the Penguins aggressiveness on the puck while down a man.

Around the Division: Providence beats Bridgeport 6-3….Springfield beats Rockford 2-1….Rochester shuts out Charlotte 3-0….Hershey and Lehigh Valley went to overtime and a Chase Priskie goal gives the Bears a win with :21 left to play and a 3-2 win for the Bears.

Standings: Hershey 35 – Penguins Thunderbirds and Checkers 25 – Hartford and Lehigh Valley 23 – Providence 22 – Bridgeport 14

Wheeling Update: Nailers score their tenth win in a row with a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati. Taylor Gauthier stopped 17 shots, Jagger Joshua had a goal as well as Justin Lee, fresh off his reassignment and Matty De St. Phalle. The Nailers return home to host the Reading Royals at 4:10 on Sunday.

Video Highlights: I still don’t see them and if they have to catch a bus to Providence, I doubt they will be up any time soon.

Back at it Sunday at 3 in Providence. More then.

Let’s Go Pens!

Stomped — Pens LOSE 6-1

             vs.

6                                   1

I don’t know what was worse, tonight’s 6-1 throttling at the hands (paws?) of the Hershey Bears or the roads home.

Either way, a quick one here on a Wednesday work night.

Bears head coach Todd Nelson challenged his team after Saturday’s loss to the Penguins. He called the Bears “entitled” after winning back to back Calder Cups.

I thought about this long and hard Wednesday. Would you want to play for a guy where every day is the Super Bowl? Or is it hard to please such a demanding man to the point where your best may not be his best? I don’t know, it’s a tough spot.

Regardless, the back to back Calder Cup Champs responded in kind and handled business on the road in Wilkes-Barre.

I’m not going to clip in each of the Bears goals.

Here’s how they lined up. Mind the embed issues. I am told sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Lineup Notes: In addition to Jagger Joshua being assigned to Wheeling, Sergei Murashov went with him. It’s an embarrassment of riches for the Penguins that the guy that beat the Bears on Saturday was in a car headed west to Wheeling. Tough league. March Johnstone replaced Joshua up front and Jack St. Ivany took the place of Isaac Belliveau on defense.

First Period: Penguins get outworked on the first Bears goal, they leave a guy that always seems to score on them for a second goal and a tic tac toe play ends up in their net for the third goal.

They went Ethan Bear, Pierrick Dube and Bogdan Trineyev in that order.

Two of those goals were scored in the final minute which has to be unacceptable.

Second Period: Hoping to get back into the game, the Penguins put a firing squad in front of Hunter Shepard but Shepard had a blindfold and a good cigarette because he was cool as a cucumber and turned them all away.

The Penguins would lose a board battle and the Bears would score another to make it 4-0 (Henrik Rybinski) then a shot changes speed / direction on Joel Blomqvist and Alex Limoges gets credit for it and it’s 5-0, and the very next shift :16 later Boris Katchouk would score to get the Penguins on the board.

But then an Ethen Frank snipe made it 6-1, again a goal by the opposition in the period’s final minute.

Third Period: Filip Larsson would replace Joel Blomqvist and allow no shots, the Penguins would score no goals and it would end up a 6-1 final.

Three Stars: 3) Hunter Shepard (29 saves) 2) Ethen Frank (goal, assist) 1) Henrik Rybinski (goal, two assists)

The Good: I slid down a hill, almost put my truck sideways and into a ditch but made it out straight, slower and OK and home in one piece.

The Bad: Nights like these make me miss summer.

Turning Point: The Frank goal that made it 6-1 proved that even if the Penguins scored again, Hershey wasn’t backing down.

Around the Division: Lehigh Valley loses 7-3 at home to Rockford…. Hartford wins 6-1 in Bridgeport. The rest of them had the Wednesday off.

Standings: Hershey 33 – Penguins 23 – Charlotte 23 – Lehigh Valley 22 – Springfield 21 – Hartford 21 – Providence 18 – Bridgeport 13

Things are tight, yes, but the Penguins have six games in hand on Hershey and three on everyone else but for Charlotte who have the same games played (17) and. four on Bridgeport.

Wheeling Update: Nailers were off.

Video Highlights: Doubt anyone would want to relive this abomination.

Back at it Saturday in Hartford. More then.

Let’s Go Pens!

Weekend Preview – Long December

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins played just nine games in the month of November. Lots of time in between games but buddy, that’s about to change. There are 11 games on the schedule in the month of December and three of those will be played this week alone starting at home Wednesday against the Hershey Bears.

Music to Set the Mood…

I kind of had to. Not really a fan of the song. Not really a fan of December in general, despite it being my birthday month and my favorite holiday (Christmas)

A Quote…

December, being the last month of the year, cannot help but make us think of what is to come.
— Fennel Hudson

Come to think of it, there is a lot of weight in that quote with this team and I will continue to explain.

The Setup

A rematch Wednesday with the Hershey Bears and a Friday off (you will never hear me complain) then a Saturday in Hartford and a Sunday afternoon in Providence.

The Penguins faced a big test against the North leading (at the time) Laval Rocket, fell down big and struggled with the Rocket’s speed, adjusted, scored a few power play goals and won.

Then the next night they went on the road to Hershey, a place they struggle at and won a heavyweight contest against the back to back champs and beat them clean 5-4. They scored a couple power play goals in that one too.

I had someone mention to me the other day that coaching may have a hand in it and I agree. Do we think that a J.D. Forrest coached team adjusts Friday at home against Laval and on the fly Saturday in Hershey? It may be kicking the guy when he is already out the door, but I don’t really know.

Back to the quote, yeah, it is December but you can’t help of what is to come with this team.

For the opponents, it was a rough week for the 13 time champs. They beat Laval 5-3 Wednesday, lost in overtime Friday in Allentown against the Phantoms and then Saturday’s result.

Hartford lost in overtime against the Phantoms 5-4, and got smoked in Springfield Saturday 4-1. The Wolf Pack will be in Bridgeport Wednesday and host the Rockford IceHogs. (Western teams, must be nice) on Friday.

Providence were swept in a home and home with an all of a sudden really good Utica Comets team 5-3 and 3-0 respectively and then hosted Springfield Sunday and lost 3-2. Yeah, the Bruins lost all three games. They are uncharacteristically bad right now.

The Bruins will have a road trip in Utica again Friday and will host Bridgeport Saturday before welcoming in the Penguins.

Records

The Bears are 14-5-3-0 and lead the Atlantic Division with 31 points. The Penguins are in second with a 11-4-1-0 record and 23 points. Hartford is 8-8-2-1 in sixth place good for 19 points and Providence is 8-10-2-0 with 18 points and sit seventh in the Division.

Who’s Up? Who’s Down? Who’s Out?

They are surprisingly getting heathy, with a few guys out but most of their important core healthy and contributing.

They got Jack St. Ivany back from Pittsburgh on a straight reassignment which was a bit of a out of left field add because I wasn’t expecting it on Tuesday. It looks like he and Owen Pickering have swapped spots, which is fine. Pickering is a rookie. If he stumbles, he can come back here and St. Ivany can go back up. It’s a win-win either way for the AHL club.

Jagger Joshua was sent to Wheeling Tuesday also.

The roster tracker here and tabbed at the top of the page keeps dibs on the day to day.

What can we learn about the Penguins this week?

I mean if they play the way they played this past weekend, then you should expect all six points again, right?

I don’t think it’s an unreasonable ask, but things always change in the AHL. Here’s an example: Can you explain how the Utica Comets started 0-10 and all of a sudden have ripped off five straight and are one of the hottest teams in the AHL? Things change. They had a coaching change. Players bought in. They get breaks go their way finally.

You need to beware if you are a Penguins fan. Now, am I saying that they will lose 10 in a row? No, I don’t think the talent and leadership will allow that to happen. But you can’t think that just because they were successful in Hershey Saturday that automatically means they are going to go 12-0 against the Bears.

But it’s nice, going back to the Quote at the top, thinking of what is to come. One game at a time, keep building up that winning credit for when you find yourself in a February slog.

Who’s in Goal?

I think it’s reasonable to think that Joel Blomqvist starts Wednesday against Hershey and again Saturday in Hartford and then let Sergei Murashov go Sunday in Hartford. Unless they don’t want Murashov to go more than a week in between starts, then Murashov goes Saturday.

Clay Stevenson for the Bears, Dylan Garand for the Wolf Pack and Michael DiPierto for the Bruins if I bet pennies on this, which I don’t.

Who’s Running the Show?

Mason Riley and Casey Terreri doling out discipline Wednesday with Patrick Dapuzzo and J.P. Waleski on the lines.

Jake Kamrass and Austin O’Rourke will be mediating in Hartford with Dylan Blujus and Dylan Lewis on the lines.

Mike Sullivan and Hayden Verbeek and the Sunday assignment with Stephen Drain and Kenneth Gates on the lines.

Looking Ahead…

Five straight home games for the Penguins, starting next Wednesday at home against the Checkers, Friday with Charlotte and Saturday against the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Give us a bold prediction…

They score two shorthanded goals in one of these next three, winning all three.

AHL Power Rankings — Week 8

You guys.

We did it.

We managed to have a number one ranked team last week stay there this week.

The Grand Rapids Griffins stay at the top spot in the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings the week after bringing to an end the Cleveland Monsters ten game win streak.

Some shake up to the top five. Don’t forget to jump through to teams 6 through 32 if you didn’t link in direct. Here we go…

1. Grand Rapids Griffins

Last Week: 1st (no change)
Record: 14-5-1

Griffins bring an end to the Monsters ten game win streak. Three straight with Chicago this weekend.

2. Cleveland Monsters

Last Week: 3rd (up 1)
Record: 14-5-0-1

I teased the Monsters being the number one team in this weeks Rankings after Saturday’s recap after winning ten straight and they go to Grand Rapids and lose. Still, take over the North Division lead from Laval.

3. Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Last Week: 5th (up 2)
Record: 11-4-1

Beat the division leading Rocket and Bears impressively. I’m hesitant to put the Penguins at number one because it seems like a cursed spot and I’m not a madman. But if the Penguins keep rolling with the wins against the Bears, Wolf Pack and Bruins this week, they will leave me no choice.

4. Calgary Wranglers

Last Week: 8th (up 4)
Record: 15-5-1

Seven game road trip ends with a sweep in Winnipeg. Home now for a bit with Tucson on the menu.

5. Belleville Senators

Last Week: 7th (up 2)
Record: 9-4-0-4

B-Sens grinding points, sweeping Bridgeport this weekend. Now off to Winnipeg to take on a last place in the Central Moose team.
