Shooting Away a Losing Streak — Pens WIN 3-2 (SO)

WBS            @            POR

First impressions are lasting ones. It’s an old saying. In an important weekend for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins with the Hershey Bears dangerously breathing down the necks of the Penguins, a strong start to a five game road trip beginning with a three in three starting in Portland, Maine was key to keeping the Penguins at the top of the Atlantic Division.

It took a shootout this time, but the five game losing streak is over. The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins defeat the Portland Pirates by a score of 3-2 in a shootout.

It was Matt Murray vs. Mike McKenna in goal in what turned out to be a classic battle between an old lion in McKenna and a young lion in Murray.

Lots of video highlights in this one again as I am working on my terrible video edit skills. So please, jump through if you didn’t link in direct.

Last Game: Tuesday at home against Hershey, the Penguins lost 4-1. Carter Rowney scored the only goal for the Pens in the loss. For Portland, the Pirates were in Hartford Wednesday and beat the Wolf Pack 1-0. Sena Acolytes scored the only goal in the contest and Mike McKenna had a 35 save shutout.

Last Meeting: February 14 in Wilkes-Barre, the Penguins lost in overtime 3-2 to the Pirates. Will O’Neill had a goal and an assist in that game.

Record: For WBS: 32-16-4-1 (69 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division) — For POR: 30-20-2-0 (62 pts., 3rd Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: The Penguins simply need to win. Standing in their way is a Portland Pirates team that is third in the division and looking to get by the Bears in second and the Penguins in first. Wilkes-Barre should be bolstered by the return of Oskar Sundqvist, who was returned from his NHL recall by Pittsburgh Thursday.

Keeping the Seat Warm? — Pens LOSE 4-1

HER        vs.        WBS

4                                         1

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins are in free fall mode.

With top scorers on recall to Pittsburgh, a goaltending department rife with question marks about the immediate future of the status of Matt Murray in Wilkes-Barre and line juggling around the dynamic trio of Carter Rowney, Tom Kostopoulos and Sahir Gill, it seems like the Lenguiks can’t get out of their own way when it comes to things.

So the wrong team showed up as the opponent tonight in the second place Hershey Bears.

The Bears beat the Penguins 4-1 and draw dangerously close to dethroning the Penguins for tops in the Atlantic Division.

Tristan Jarry vs. Dan Ellis

Lines were…

Anton Zlobin – Kael Mouillierat – Dominik Simon
Sahir Gill – Carter Rowney – Tom Kostopoulos
Josh Archibald – J-S Dea – Ty Loney
Tom Sestito – Jarrett Burton – Matia Marcantuoni

Reid McNeill – Steve Oleksy
Niclas Andersen – Dave Warsofsky
Tim Erixon – Will O’Neill

Tristan Jarry – Brian Foster

Lineup Notes: Matt Murray was not seen tonight. He was re-assigned Monday and it was expected that he would start but that wasn’t the case. Obie tweeted pregame that he was ill…Matia Marcantuoni was back in the lineup after missing the last 8 games…Patrick McGrath took warmups but was scratched.

First Period: Bears jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Nathan Walker snapped a shot through the legs of Steve Oleksy and past the five hole of Jarry for a 1-0 Hershey lead. Penguins couldn’t capitalize on two power plays in the period and couldn’t cash on a nice penalty kill. Carter Rowney had a memorable dash up the ice with a dangle that didn’t pay off. Pens started to match the Bears chances.

Second Period: Pens had to kill a penalty to start the period and the Bears used nice passing to set up Travis Boyd in from to double their lead. Then Reid McNeill hauled down Jakub Vrana and referee Geno Binda awarded a penalty shot. It was a penalty, but a clear penalty shot? I’m not so sure. Regardless, Riley Barber took the penalty shot, snaked in, and well…

After that, the Penguins started to skate with purpose, Carter Rowney picked his corner…

Pens continued to skate with purpose, continued to pressure, Ellis was forced into some saves but Liam O’Brien then took a puck 180′ down the ice, with David Warsofsky in close pursuit, but O’Brien managed to get a backhander off and score to make it 4-1.

Feeling at the time was that the air was let out of the tires a bit. Pressure and make it look like you are going to battle back from two goals down and you are back to three.

Third Period: Bears didn’t let the Penguins get any closer. Pens matches them chance for chance but were trailing three goals. Of note, Sahir Gill left the game with what appeared to be a lower body injury.

Three Stars: 3) Carter Rowney (goal, even)  2) Dan Ellis (26 saves on 27 shots) 1) Riley Barber (goal, assist, +2)

Standings: Penguins (.651 percentage points) — Hershey (.636) — Portland (.588) — Providence (.577) — Bridgeport (.575) — Hartford (.528) — Lehigh Valley (.500) — Springfield (.433)

Last Game: Sunday in Rochester, the Penguins lost in overtime 3-2. The line of Tom Kostopoulos, Sahir Gill and Carter Rowney all had two points each. For Hershey, they hosted the Providence Bruins and lost 6-3 on Sunday. Connor Carrick and Jakub Vrana were both -3.

Last Meeting: December 26 in Hershey, the Bears pounded the Penguins 5-0. Brian Foster started the game and stopped 16 of 21 shots. Casey Desmith was brought in on relief and stopped all 7 shots faced. Dan Ellis recorded a 22 save shutout. Carter Camper had three assists.

Why you should care: Get ready for a lot of these Gameday setups that preview Hershey and Wilkes-Barre. These rivals meet 12 times this season. Tonight is just the fifth of the dozen times these teams meet. Hershey is coming in 7-2-0-1 in their last ten, the Penguins are 3-3-4-0 in that same span. The Bears have significantly closed what once was a nearly insurmountable lead that the Penguins had on the Atlantic Division. No matter what happens tonight, the Penguins will remain in first place in the division. With a win, the Pens open up some breathing room on Hershey for tops in the division. With a loss, the Bears draw one step closer, with six more meetings to come.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 20

We begin the Week 20 Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings with an apology to the Toronto Marlies.

We dropped the Marlies out of the top spot for the first time in a while last week. What do the Marlies do? Obliterate the Atlantic Division leading Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins rattling off four straight goals in the third period. Then next night, they beat the third place Atlantic Division Portland Pirates.

Their capsule tells the story as why the Marlies should be your legitimate Calder Cup contenders. So go ahead, and jump through to see where your favorite team ended up this week.

The Un-Finishers — Pens LOSE 3-2 (OT)

WBS          @          HER

2                                                   3

Here’s a great gem of a tweet that Citizens Voice beat writer Seth Lakso mined as we were waiting for the dry scrape of what ended up being a 3-2 overtime loss to the Rochester Americans.

Make it one in their last 13.

The turning point of this game was a long 5-on-3 power play that the Penguins were on in the third period for :31. After a time out, the Penguins owned a ton of offensive zone time but were held out of the net by the Americans penalty killers and the play of goaltender Nathan Lieuwen.

About that power play. It was a clean game for both teams with the referees arms staying down until the third period. The Penguins had all of the power plays in the third period and Rochester did not have a single one until overtime.

But instead of putting the cart before the horse, let me tell the whole story. Jump through if you didn’t link in direct to see the rest of the story because I bring the video highlights again in this blog recap.

Last Game: Friday night in Toronto, the Penguins were up 2-0 going into the third period but lost 4-2 to the Toronto Marlies 4-2. Kael Mouillierat and Anton Zlobin scored goals for the Penguins in the loss. For Rochester, they were in Syracuse last night and won 6-2. Tim Schaller had a hat trick, plus an assist and was named first star of the game.

Last Meeting: November 14 in Wilkes-Barre, the Pens won 3-1. Wilkes-Barre dominated the Americans in all facets, outshooting them 42-16.

Record: For WBS: 32-15-3-1 (68 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division) — For RCH: 25-24-2-1 (53 pts., 5th place North Division)

Why you should care: The Penguins need to close out opponents again. They have simply failed in the last three games. Back-to-back overtime losses to the Portland Pirates last weekend and getting smoked 4-2 after leading 2-0 after two periods in Toronto this past Friday. Rochester probably isn’t making playoffs t his year, so this could be a good start.
