Last Game: Saturday at home vs. Hartford, the Pens won 5-3. They exploded for three goals in the third period. Anton Zlobin had two goals and was named first star of the game. For Providence, they hosted Manchester on Sunday and lost 2-1. Zach Trotman had the only goal for the P-Bruins in the loss.

Record: For WBS: 22-11-1-3 (48 pts., 2nd place East Division) — For PRO: 20-13-1-5 (46 pts., 2nd place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Battle of two second place teams in their respective divisions that play the same type of stingy hockey. Penguins open the first of three straight on the road and this is the first of two against this Providence team. Should be a great test for both teams.

Second Quarter Grades

News Du Jour: Pittsburgh re-assigned Defenseman Simon Despres and Forwards Nick Drazenovic and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond back to Wilkes-Barre Thursday morning.

Technically, the Penguins will have hit the half way mark after Friday’s nights game vs. Providence, then play two more games Saturday and Sunday. But for the sake of ease on the blogger, I am only counting 18 games for the Second Quarter instead of 19 games.

Someone just has to remind me to add a game when we get to the Third Quarter, or else the numbers are going to be wrong.

Anyway, the Penguins are an aggregate 22-11-1-3 through 37 games played and have 48 points, good for second in the East Division currently, just one point of the Division leader Binghamton Senators.

The Penguins have been throttled by call-ups. Example: Zach Sill is a name that is synonymous with Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins hockey. He hasn’t played a game for Wilkes-Barre since November 23. November 23! The same applies for Jayson Megna, Andrew Ebbett and Simon Despres. They have been with the Pittsburgh Penguins on recall and hand not played a game in this Quarter.

Yet, WIlkes-Barre has survived and thrived and remain in contention for the East Division lead, despite dressing an ever changing lineup filled with call-ups from the ECHL.

Anyway, here’s how it works in case this is the first time you have seen my grades. Just like the First Quarter, anyone who skated gets a grade. Results are based off of second quarter production only. Stats are second quarter only also.

If you’ll be so kind as to jump through, let’s get started…

Injuries 2.0

Just when you thought the Pittsburgh Penguins were finally healthy and bodies were going to, eventually, start filtering back to Wilkes-Barre.

Boom. Nick Drazenovic recalled Tuesday morning and Brian Gibbons and Joe Vitale placed on injured reserve retroactive. But wait, there’s more! James Neal is day to day (upper body) and might still play Wednesday vs. Washington but might not, so there’s a possibility that yet another body may be claimed from Wilkes-Barre.

Jonathan had a Tuesday update to complain about the Tom, Nick and Harry line being broken up to offer perspective on the Pens down the middle.

Coal Street released Barry Goers from his PTO and recalled Nick D’Agostino.

Anyway, I was thinking about all the injuries the Penguins have had in the past three seasons and how pillaged Wilkes-Barre has been as a result. That said, with all of the advanced analytics, charts, metrics, graphs and what have you out there on the internet and filling up your Twitter feed I was wondering if it was possible for someone to come up with a chart defining the injuries sustained by the Penguins in the past three to five years. In comparison, look at the injuries sustained by the other 29 teams and compare them. Example:

Player x broke his ankle pursuing a puck into the boards. His lower leg hits the boards and his leg turns awkwardly and he suffers a broken ankle. How many other NHL teams have had this similar injury?

Like how many times do you see a player block a shot with his hand errantly? How often does it happen to the Penguins in the past three years and the rest of the league?

I guess what I am trying to get at is there is no doubt that the Penguins seem to be ravaged by injuries year after year. There has to be some kind of explanation as to why.

Anyway, I am aiming at a Thursday release of my Second Quarter Grades provided I don’t break, strain, pull, tweak or concuss some upper or lower body injury in an undisclosed fashion. Heh.

Week 15 AHL Power Rankings

Here at the Chirps from Center Ice Power Rankings Politboro, if you run down and catch a team that was way out in front of you a few weeks ago, you get massive brownie points. Also, if you lead your division by a wide sum, you get much consideration.

I am talking about your Texas Stars, your new number one this week, and your Grand Rapids Griffins, who lead the Midwest Division by 10 points, the biggest margin in the AHL. The Stars overtake Abbotsford for first in the West with a win Friday against the Heat. The Heat were obliterating everything in its path a few weeks ago.

Are the Grand Rapids Griffins better than four teams in the East Division? They lead their division by 10 points and until each team plays the other in a season we may never know.

The Norfolk Admirals are the most overrated team in the Rankings this week. Hershey is on a tear. Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre have both led the East Division for weeks now, yet the Politboro says they remain third.

The aforementioned Griffins and your Syracuse Crunch are the biggest risers this week, up 8 spots. The Springfield Falcons and Lake Erie Monsters are both down 10 spots from last week.

Alright, enough talking. If you didn’t link in direct, jump through to see where everyone else ended up.

Third, Four Ways — Pens WIN 5-3

button_hfd200     vs.     WBS

3                                         5

Coach John Hynes has said in recents weeks that the Penguins cannot rely on the top line to do all the work.

It worked tonight. The third line did it all for Wilkes-Barre.

Goals by Anton Zlobin (2) Tom Kuhnhackl and Dominik Uher (with an empty netter by Brian Dumoulin at the end) and the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins mount another third period comeback and takedown the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-3 in front of the biggest crowd of the year, 8,188 fans.

Oh, and they scored the goals four different ways: shorthanded (Uher) even strength (Zlobin, twice) power play (Kuhnhackl) and empty net (Dumoulin)

Jeff Deslauriers won his 16th game of the season, tied for first in wins among AHL goaltenders.

Jason Missiaen vs. the aforesaid Deslauriers.

In warmups, the recently recalled Scott Stajcer hadn’t made it to the arena on time for the Wolf Pack so Missiaen took warmups alone.

No lineup changes for Wilkes-Barre.

First Period: Dominik Uher scores a shorthanded goal on a funky shot that just beats Missiaen for a 1-0 Pens lead early. Reid McNeill would scrap with Michael Haley in a nice bout. Then the newly acquired TJ Hensick would score to bring the Wolf Pack to even again, in a period which was largely dominated by Hartford and evidence by the two shots taken by the Penguins in the period.

Second Period: Danny Kristo burns a WBS D-man and scores off a long breakout pass to him to put the Wolf Pack ahead 2-1. Anton Zlobin would score his first of the night to bring the Pens even at two a piece again. Then Hensick picks off a WBS exit bid, and you know how those normally go, this time was no different and the Pens trailed again 3-2. Shots through two periods were 17-9 Hartford.

Third Period: Pens get a power play about midway through. You almost got the sense that they needed to score here. They did, Tom Kuhnhackl ties the game at three all. Then, Zlobin crashes the net and scores to put the Penguins ahead 4-3. The Pens really swarmed the ‘Pack in the period, outshooting them 17-2. They took control of the game in the third and used it to win.

Dumoulin tacks on an empty netter and that was that.

Three Stars: 3) Tom Kuhnhackl (goal, +1) 2) Scott Harrington (three assists, +1) and 1) Anton Zlobin (two goals, +2)

Nice game by the third line. Uher / Kuhnhackl had been struggling offensively and Zlobin looks like he is turning the corner.

The Tom, Nick and Harry line? Pointless. But with the third line doing what it did, who needed them?

Around the Division: Nice night for the Pens. Binghamton loses 4-1 to the Adirondack Phantoms and also lost G Nathan Lawson to injury. Norfolk loses 5-1 to Worcester. Syracuse repays a 1-0 shutout at the hands of the Providence Bruins the night before with their own 1-0 win vs. the P-Bruins in Syracuse and Hershey defeats the top team in the AHL, the Springfield Falcons, by a score of 5-3.

Standings: Binghamton 49 — Penguins 48 — Norfolk 43 — Hershey 38 — Syracuse 38

Conference: 1) SPR (54) 2) MCH (54) 3) BNG (49) 4) WBS (48) 5) ALB (47) 6) PRO (46) 7) NOR (43) 8) STJ (41)

Wheeling Update: The Nailers lose to the Toledo Walleye 5-3. Nick D’Agostino had an assist in the loss.

SendToNews Highlights: Are here.

Pens have off until taking to the road in Providence next Friday. I’ll have the Week 15 AHL Power Rankings here Monday with whatever relative news surrounding the Penguins here this week as warranted.

The Penguins sit at 37 games played. Friday will be the half way mark. So I just decided that I am going to put together my Second Quarter Grades this week. Look for them probably Wednesday or Thursday, depending on news.

Let’s Go Pens!!!

Last Game: Last night in Glens Falls, the Pens won 4-1. Tom Kostopoulos scored two goals for Wilkes-Barre in the win. Hartford was in Worcester and lost 3-1. Ryan Bourque score the only goal for the Wolf Pack in the loss.

Last Meeting: Last Friday in Hartford, the Pens won in a shootout 2-1. Harry Zolnierczyk scored late in the third period to force overtime / shootout and Paul Thompson scored the shootout winner.

Record: For WBS: 21-11-1-3 (46 pts., 2nd place East Division) — For HFD: 11-18-0-5 (27 pts., 5th place Northeast Division)

Why you should care: Penguins will have a golden opportunity to win a game tonight in front of what will likely be the first sellout crowd of the season against a Hartford team who isn’t the best this season. Hopefully, the Pens give the fans enough of a show to have them come back again, soon.

Pens Beat Up Phantoms — WIN 4-1

   button_adk200       @       WBS

  4                                         1

Boy, is this going to be a fun rivalry next season.

That is when the Adirondack Phantoms relocate to Allentown, closer to Wilkes-Barre and likely into the East Division and become more of a familiar opponent for the Penguins.

The Pens won this game, a very physical and scrappy one, 4-1. Their power play came to life and they scored twice on the man advantage, and beat the Phantoms 4-1.

Tom Kostopoulos scored two goals, Brian Dumoulin the other and Harry Zolnierczyk and empty netter in the final minute.

There was some monumental off ice news this afternoon out of Coal Street as the first ever Hall of Fame Class was announced. The Pens said at the the start of the year that they were naming two players and a non-player, called a “builder” into their inaugural Hall. Today, it should come as no surprise that Dennis Bonvie and Alain Nasreddine were named as the players and Former State Representative Kevin Blaum was named in the “builder” category.

Basically the name synonymous with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins is Dennis Bonvie. No one has worn his Number 27 since his retirement and if you ask me, the number needs hoisted into the rafters sooner rather than later. Nasreddine is probably the second most popular Penguin in the 15 year history and serves as assistant coach to John Hynes. There would be no Northeastern Pennsylvania Civic Arena and Convention Center / First Union Arena at Casey Plaza / Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza / WIlkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins without Kevin Blaum.

So no real complaints about this Class being named the inaugural one. The ceremony for it is Saturday, February 22 when the Penguins face the Providence Bruins.

Anyway, back to this game.

Harrison Ruopp and Carter Rowney were in for Barry Goers and Denver Manderson, respectively.

Jeff Deslauriuers vs. reigning AHL Player of the Week, Cal Heeter.

First Period: Very chippy, very physical open by both teams, who were throwing hits and fists to open the game. The Pens ended up down a whole two minutes on a 5-on-3 but were able to kill it off. Then, Tom Kostopoulos scored a goal when Nick Drazenovic stripped a Phantom behind Heeter’s net and dished to Tom Kostopoulos for his first of the night for a 1-0 Pens lead and ending Heeter’s shutout streak at 126:13.

There must have been some bad blood with Harrison Ruopp against the Phantoms, as nearly every altercation involved him in some regard. He and Kris Newbury fought and Newbury got the better of him in a fight late in the period.

Second Period: Jason Akeson scored on the James Neal play off a face-off win to put the Phantoms on the board. Then, the Pens were the ones that found themselves the beneficiaries of a 5-on-3 and, unlike the Phantoms, were able to score two goals and essentially put away the Phantoms for the rest of the game. Tom Kostopoulos’ second of the night and Brian Dumoulin finishing off a 3-on-1 to put the Pens ahead 3-1.

Third Period: For most teams, in a physical, scrappy game like this one down 3-1 you think they would pack it in and go away quietly right? Not the Phantoms. They would outshoot the Pens 13-4 this period and at one point 10-1, throwing anything and everything they could at Deslauriers, but the WBS net minder and the defense would hold bend but not break. Harry Zolnierczyk would pot an empty netter to put the game away for good for the Pens.

Three Stars: 3) Jason Akeson (goal, -1) 2) Jeff Deslauriers (31 saves on 32 shots) 1) Tom Kostopoulos (two goals, assist, even)

Around the Division: Binghamton beats Hershey at home 4-2. Norfolk, down 3-0 to Portland and then 4-3 late, beat the Pirates up in Maine 5-4 in a shootout. Syracuse loses to Providence 1-0 in a shootout.

Standings: Binghamton 49 — Penguins 46 — Norfolk 43 — Hershey 36 — Syracuse 36

Conference: 1) SPR (54) 2) MCH (54) 3) BNG (49) 4) WBS (46) 5) PRO (46) 6) ALB (45) 7) NOR (43) 8) STJ (39)

Wheeling Update: The Nailers were off tonight.

SendToNews Highlights: Phantoms haven’t posted them yet. If I remember to check later I will and link accordingly.

Pens travel home for a 7:05 game against Hartford. Gameday for that will be up here on the blog at 3 p.m.

Let’s Go Pens!!!
