Pasquale! – Pens LOSE 2-1

   button_stj200       vs.       WBS

  2                                          1

St. John’s IceCaps goaltender Eddie Pasquale has been a thorn in the side of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins for some time now.

Dating back to 2012, in the Eastern Conference Semifinals agains these same IceCaps, Pasquale’s heroics in that series propelled the St. John’s IceCaps to a Eastern Conference Finals berth.

Tonight, it was the same magic.

Pasquale stops 31 of 32 and his St. John’s IceCaps squeak by the Penguins tonight 2-1. Rematch tomorrow.

Jeff Deslauriers vs. the aforementioned Eddie Pasquale

Lineup was pretty much the same from Wednesday. Bobby Farnham was eligible to return but did not. Zach Sill was sent down by Pittsburgh at around 5 and was snot in time for the game.

First Period: Pens came out and flew all around the ice and threw shots on net that Pasquale saved. Finally, Jayson Megna set up Harry Zolnierczyk on a pass that Zolnierczyk buried past Pasquale for the Pens only goal of the game. Later, after a successful penalty kill, Travis Ehrhardt zipped one past Deslauriers for a tie game.

Second Period: This period was where Pasquale shone brightly. The score could have been and should have been 5-1 Penguins if not for stellar, and I mean stellar saves by the IceCaps net minder. Especially shorthanded. It appeared that there was some kind of forcefield around the net that Pasquale guarded. I remember a sequence in particular where he stoned Jayson Megna and Harry Zolnierczyk on sure goals on the same shift.

Later, Patrice Cormier gets around Brian Dumoulin and puts one past Deslauriers to put the IceCaps out front for good.

Third Period: Tom Kostopoulous thinks he scores. I do too. Only problem is, he didn’t. Puck hits the top of the crossbar, straight down and not in. Referee Trent Knorr reviewed it on replay and confirmed what I just described.

More Pasquale saves. It was his night. Nothing was getting by him. Even with some power play time late and even a 5-on-3, the Pens were not able to get one by Pasquale.

Three Stars: 3) Travis Ehrhardt (goal, +1) 2) Patrice Cormier (goal, +1) and 1) Eddie Pasquale (31 saves on 32 shots)

Around the Division: Binghamton obliterates Adirondack 6-2 in my game to watch tonight. Norfolk fights back and wins in overtime 3-2 over the Portland Pirates down in Virginia and the Syracuse Crunch lose in Montreal to Hamilton 4-1. Hershey was off.

Sufferin’ Succotash – Pens WIN 3-1

WBS          @          HER

3                                                   1

Cody Sylvester has followed the track of Jayson Megna and Brian Gibbons in Pittsburgh.

That is, he scored in his “league up” debut. His goal turned out to be the game winner and the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins hold off the Rochester Americans 3-1 and are in sole possession of first place in the East Division and have quietly won three in a row.

Jeff Deslauriers vs. Matt Hackett

Nick Drazenovic (injury) Peter Merth (injury) Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond (injury) Nick D’Agostino (healthy scratch) and Bobby Farnham (suspension) were the Penguins out of the lineup. The aforementioned Cody Sylvester, along with Denver Manderson and Dustin Stevenson made their Penguins debuts.

First Period: Wilkes-Barre came out gangbusters to open the game and just smothered Rochester. There was one sequence where the Amerks attempted to clear out of their zone on three different occasions and were unable to due to the high Penguins pressure they encountered. Finally, after dominating much of the period, Tom Kostopoulos deflected a Scott Harrington point shot from the blue line home with under five seconds remaining.

Second Period: Wilkes-Barre would keep the pressure on the Americans early in the second. Jamie Tardif would turn a puck over and Cody Sylvester would score his first goal of the season for the Pens and first AHL goal with a nice wrist shot. Rochester would answer with a goal of its own with a goal by Kevin Porter on a power play. Then the Penguins started playing loose in their own end and started giving the Americans multiple chances at attempting to even the game but Jeff Deslauriers was up to the task.

Third Period: In a word, a snoozer. Pens dropped back and played defense and were wholly content with taking just three shots on goal while allowing Rochester seven. The most exciting thing to happen was this Jayson Megna empty netter, where he fends off two Rochester defenders.

Three Stars: 3) Cody Sylvester (game winning goal, +1) 2) Kevin Porter (goal, -2) and 1) Jeff Deslauriers (23 saves on 24 shots)

Around the Division: They all watched us.

Standings: Penguins 24 — Binghamton 22 — Syracuse 20 — Norfolk 19 — Hershey 14

Conference: 1) MCH (25) 2) WBS (24) 3) SPR 21 4) BNG 22 5) ALB (21) 6) SYR (20) 7) NOR (19) 8) HFD (18)

Wheeling Update: Nailers fall in a shootout in Reading 3-2. Zack Torquato had a goal and an assist in the game.

SendToNews Highlights: Are here.

But for breaking news Thursday, next blog update comes Friday at 3 p.m. for the St. John’s setup.

Let’s Go Pens!

GAMEDAY: @ Rochester 11/20

Away Game: 9

AHL Game: 238

Who: Rochester Americans

Where: Blue Cross Arena

When: 7:05 p.m. EST

Media Kit

Last Game: Saturday in Wilkes-Barre, the Penguins won 3-1 over the Hershey Bears. G Jeff Deslauriers stopped 21 of 22 and was named first star of the game. For Rochester, they played Saturday in Binghamton and lost 7-3. Mike Zigomanis had two goals in the loss.

Record: For WBS: 10-3-0-2 (22 pts., 1st place East Division) — For RCH: 7-4-2-2 (18 pts., 2nd place North Division)

Why you should care: Penguins play a midweek road game against a non-Conference opponent. They need an effort like the one Saturday, at home against division rival Hershey, if they want to come home later with the two points.

Puppies! Kittens! Rainbows!

I opted for this headline because the alternative one I had in mind, “Mannino, Farnham Suspended” seemed to grim to me.

But it’s true. Bobby Farnham was suspended one game by the AHL today and will miss tomorrows road game at Rochester for an illegal check to the head Friday in Syracuse. No penalty was called. In fact, Farnham played the game without being penalized.

But, a part of Rule 28.1 of the AHL Rulebook reads as follows…

If an investigation is requested by a Club, it must be initiated within
twenty-four (24) hours following the completion of the game in which
the incident occurred. In addition, teams are required to fill out a
request for supplemental discipline form along with a two hundred fifty
dollar ($250) deposit refundable if further action is taken by the
League.

So it’s safe to assume that the Syracuse Crunch sent tape to the League Office in Springfield and asked them to review it.

EDIT: Yep, they did, as reported by Lindsay Kramer who covers the Syracuse Crunch.

The other news of the day was that the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins have suspended G Peter Mannino for apparently not reporting to the Wheeling Nailers. Jonathan Bombulie had more on this…

In between all of this, there was news that Brad Thiessen was released by HIFK in Finland. Normally, when this happens, the player wants to be released. It could mean that the player has another deal lined up in another league in another country, possibly North America.

Great! Thiessen is coming back to Wilkes-Barre, right?

Wrong…

We’ll have to see what happens with Mannino and monitor where Thiessen ends up.

Barring anymore breaking news, the Gameday setup for tomorrow’s game in Rochester will be up at 3 p.m.

Week 7 AHL Power Rankings

NOTE: News of the day from Coal Street included Brian Gibbons’ recall and four recalls from Wheeling. Read about it here.

More bad than good in Week 7 of the AHL Power Rankings. That’s why teams like the Chicago Wolves are up 13 spots in 9th this week after winning five in a row.

It also seems like the team that gets to number one, can’t stay there. Last week it was the Grand Rapids Griffins. They lost two this week to divisional foes and are down seven spots in eighth.

If the Abbotsford Heat won ten in a row, they’d be number one. Ilya Bryzgalov made sure that didn’t happen Saturday in Oklahoma City so the Binghamton Senators are your new number one. Can they stay there? They have one this week with Adirondack, whom they are 1-2 against and two this weekend with the Hershey Bears, the only team this week not to go anywhere in the rankings this week.

Biggest fall this week belongs to your Syracuse Crunch, down eleven to thirteenth.

One Goes Up, They All Come Up

I don’t think a Mohegan Sun Casino blackjack dealer can shuffle the cards like the brain trust on Coal Street did today.

At around 9 a.m. Monday, Brian Gibbons was recalled to Pittsburgh. It’s his first NHL call-up, and a well deserved one. Gibbons has flat out been the best player in Wilkes-Barre all season. He’s finally put together the equation of: Speed + Finish = NHL call up. Good for him.

That call up left Wilkes-Barre short one forward. Nick Drazenovic didn’t practice today per Jonathan Bombulie’s Monday update. Pierre Leblond hasn’t resumed practicing yet either. So the speculation began on who could get recalled from Wheeling.

Well, at around 3 p.m. today, Wilkes-Barre recalled FOUR players from Wheeling. G Eric Hartzell, D Dustin Stevenson and forwards Denver Manderson and Cody Sylvester.

Instead of trying to make sense of it, Jonathan already did…

Make that four call-ups. WBS called up C Denver Manderson, C Cody Sylvester, D Dustin Stevenson and G Eric Hartzell from the Nailers and sent G Peter Mannino down in Hartzell’s place. The more I think about it, Manderson and Sylvester could both play Wednesday. Payerl, Megna and Uher have played center, but not this year. So that leaves Andrew Ebbett and Mike Carman as the only true centers on the roster. Stevenson is a plus-9 for Wheeling, so he was an obvious call for defense depth.

The Hartzell situation is a little more interesting. He’s 2-2 and with a 2.58 GAA with Wheeling, but his save percentage is a healthy .922 and two starts back, he pitched a 37-save shutout against Elmira. I know I’m curious to see how he does in a real AHL game. Perhaps the decision makers feel the same way.

Mike O’Brien also chimed in with the following…

It’ll be interesting to see if Hartzell gets a start either Wednesday in Rochester or this weekend vs. St. John’s. My guess is you aren’t recalling Hartzell just so he can make a trek across Pennsylvania and to Western New York this week. Mannino will likely start Wednesday for Wheeling in Reading. As for Stevenson, he’s probably a safety net for Reid McNeill / Nick D’Agostino. McNeill is still out with injury and D’Agostino is still too wet behind the ears for my liking to be slotted in full time in the bottom pairing.

But who knows. Things can get shuffled again in an instant. Let’s just hope the Pens don’t bust this week.
