AHL Game: 567

Who: Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Where: Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza

When: 7:05 p.m. EST

Media Kit

Last Game: This past Wednesday in Charlotte, the Pens won in a shootout 3-2. Chris Collins had a goal and an assist in the win. For BRI: This past Wednesday vs. the Portland Pirates, the Sound Tigers lost 5-3. Brandon Svendsen had a goal and an assist in the defeat.

Record: For WBS, 28-8-0-0 (56 pts., 1st place East Division) For BRI, 18-16-1-2 (39 pts., 5th place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Against teams outside the East Division, the Pens are 8-0. Bridgeport used to be in the East Division before the realignment two years ago. The Pens are humming along while the Sound Tigers are struggling for their playoff lives. Look for WBS to jump on the Sound Tigers early so as not to make a game of it late.

Seeing Red

36 games into the season and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton has by far the best winning percentage in professional hockey with a record of 28-8. They have achieved this record because of players they have brought in and front loading the depth chart with players in the NHL which means that guys like Dustin Jeffrey, Eric Tangradi and Nick Johnson stick it out in the minors for at least another season.

Their success can also be attributed to AHL veteran players such as Ryan Craig, Chris Collins and Geoff Walker.

The most dangerous threat on the team in my opinion? Brett Sterling. Nicknamed “The Ticket” by me as in, “ticket to a Calder Cup” Sterling is one of the most lethal scoring threats in the league. A bonafide threat to score everytime he steps on the ice.

Let me preface this piece by stating that this not a nitpicking work directed at any one player. It’s something I have had kicking around my head for a week or so. Moving on…

Sterling only has 10 goals this year thru 30 games played. (He missed 6 games early in the season due to injury) He got to 10 goals in 2009-10 by his 19th game with the Chicago Wolves, this in a year he scored 34 goals in just 55 games. The year before in 2008-09, he got to 10 goals in 26 games. The year before in 2007-08, he got to 10 in 12 games. The year before that one, 10 goals in 14 games. This was the 2006-07 rookie year when he scored 55 goals in the regular season.

Ryan Craig is a guy who has 9 goals this year. Last year with Norfolk, he led the team in goals with 23. By his 20th game last year he had 9 goals.

What am I getting at?

I am getting at when these pure scorers finally find the net, watch out. Sterling especially. In his past four AHL regular seasons he has averaged 35.75 goals a season. That was with the likes of Jason Krog and Darren Haydar. He has in WBS the likes of Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson, Ryan Craig, Eric Tangradi and even Chris Collins. The argument can be made that he isn’t asked to score and WBS plays more of a defensive brand of hockey, but I am not buying into that. You bring Sterling in to score goals, not to forecheck along the walls in the neutral zone. You use the defensive mindset to shut down a team pursuing you in a 3-1, 2-0, 4-3 or a 2-1 game. The reason you are up should be because of players like Sterling, Jeffrey, Wallace, et. al filling up the net with goals.

Again I am not complaining or expecting Sterling or anyone for that matter to score everytime they are on the ice. What I am stating is that once the goals go in they will start piling in and when that happens watch out. It is the ebb and flow of hockey.

Go Pens.

Checkers shot down – Pens win 3-2 (SO)

Completely different game tonight as expected and as called by me in the Gameday post earlier. Despite the shot total (43-25 for WBS) a very tight checking game for both sides and a 3-2 Penguins win in a shootout.

Same goaltending matchup as last night, Brad Thiessen vs. Justin Pogge. Geoff Walker was scratched for Ben Street and Jason DeSantis was in for the injured Brian Strait. Radio stated that Strait took a forearm to the head last night.

First period: Pens flying everywhere. Charlotte iced the puck 4 times in a row and I wondered if it was rope a dope hockey. Ryan Craig opened the scoring at 19:01 then a Michal Jordan point shot fluttered onto the stick of Chris Terry who scored at 19:51. The shots on goal at that point were 17-8 for Wilkes-Barre. At this point the Charlotte goal was a fluke goal in my opinion and one that they could not allow to shake them.

Second period: Rough evening for Jason DeSantis, who was burned a few times on the back end but Thiessen up to the challenge. Later, Nicholas Blanchard would get whistled for interference. The Pens power play is downright anemic at this point. Jerome Samson would skate in shorthanded and score. Less than a minute later after the penalty expired, Carl Sneep fired a puck at the net which Chris Collins finds a stick on to even the score at 2. Jesse Boulerice and Jon Matsumoto would trade separate hook and slash calls respectively and the period would end in a 2-2 deadlock with the Pens outshooting the Checkers by a 24-15 margin.

Third period: Brett Sterling needs to learn how to shoot when he has the puck in 2 on 1 situations. He has scored a ton of goals at this level. I want to say that he is almost afraid to shoot. At halfway in the third period the shots were 31-18. Later, Jesse Boulerice would get a stick slashed out of his hands and argue with referee Francis Charron and Charron would assess a 10 minute game misconduct for abuse of officials. That was it as it was an uneventful third period. WBS would outshoot Charlotte 15-7 this period and overall 39-22 to this point.

Overtime: Dustin Jeffrey needs to shoot when he has the puck on a 2 on 1. He was in on one with Sterling and the game went to a shootout…

Shootout: Chris Terry would score first but then Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Brett Sterling would all score as Thiessen would deny Drayson Bowman, Jacob Micflikier and Riley Nash for the Pens to go undefeated in a shootout and win the game.

Three stars were Justin Pogge, Chris Collins and Jerome Samson.

Around the division: Adirondack continues its winning ways in a shootout win over Albany 3-2. That was it for the East Division.

Standings: WBS with an 11 point lead up on Charlotte, 56-45. Idle Norfolk is in third with 44 points. Hershey has 43 points in fourth. Binghamton has 36 points in fifth, Syracuse is in sixth with 32 points. The Albany Devils have 29 points in seventh and the Adirondack Phantoms are last but creeping up with 24 points.

Travel / off day tomorrow for the Pens as they settle in for two Atlantic Division opponents in the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday and the Providence Bruins Saturday. Outside of the East, WBS is undefeated.

Let’s Go Pens!

Away Game 17

AHL Game: 550

Who: Charlotte Checkers

Where: Time Warner Cable Arena

When: 7 p.m. EST

Media Kit

Last Game / Last Meeting: Yesterday, the Pens won 5-2. Eric Tangradi had two goals for Wilkes-Barre. For the Checkers, Michal Jordan scored his first ever AHL goal.

Record: For WBS, 27-8-0-0 (54 pts., 1st place East Division) For CHA, 20-12-1-3 (44 pts., 2nd place East Division)

Why you should care: Last night in my opinion the Pens really toyed with the Checkers. Look for a completely different game tonight. If you really like defensive battles you may be in for a treat tonight as it looks like it may just shape up to be one this evening.

League on Notice – Pens defeat Checkers 5-2

The ramifications of tonight’s 5-2 Penguins victory in Charlotte will be heard league wide tonight. Here are some stats to chew on I tweeted earlier as to why I feel this way:

  • Charlotte is the second highest team in the league. They were shut down tonight by the Pens, who are second in the league in defense.
  • Charlotte’s PP is ranked 6th in the league at a 20.9% success rate. Their PK is 2nd in the league, killing penalties at a 87.2% rate.
  • Charlotte’s home PP is 3rd in the league, at 25.6%. WBS road PK is 16th in the league, 82.4%. Charlotte’s home PK ranks them 8th at 86.4% and WBS road PK is 16th with a 81.0% rate.

Stats were good up to this game, but none of it mattered to WBS. In my opinion, a dominating performance by the Penguins.

Brad Thiessen vs. Justin Pogge tonight. Joe Vitale played tonight. Keven Veilleux did not make the trip. Ben Street was the scratch.

First period: Very early, Charlotte came out firing with something like 5 straight shots on goal to start the game, but Brad Thiessen was up to the challenge. Then, Brett Sterling dispossessed a Checker trying to make a clear attempt and passed to Tim Wallace for the 1-0 lead. The Pens would get two power play chances in the first with a Drayson Bowman unsportsmanlike after a whistle and Oskar Osala interference. Lots of back door play by the Pens but no scoring. For the evening, WBS would go 0 for 4 on the man advantage.

Second period: The acting by Charlotte instead of reacting would continue. Joey Mormina really had a great game tonight. Was shut down island. Nothing would really materialize this period until late, Eric Tangradi would throw a knuckle puck at Justin Pogge at 19:45 of the second for a 2-0 lead. At this point the shots were 16-12 WBS.

To this point really a dominating performance by the road team against an up and coming Checkers team. Charlotte is ranked 2nd in the East, 3rd in the Eastern Conference and 8th overall in the league. For WBS to come in and just set up shop and set the tone really sent, in my opinion, a shot across the bow of all the other teams who think they can get close to WBS. You still have to play the games and all, but the mindset in the opposing players minds is such that a game vs. WBS is just not going to come easy.

Third period: Nothing much in the first half of the period. At 9:06, Dustin Jeffrey and Nick Johnson break in on a 2 on 1 and Johnson scores. 40 seconds later Jeffrey comes in on a 3 on 1 and Steve Wagner scores. At this point it is 4-0 and the rout is on. Justin Pogge got the hook and Mike Murphy relieved Pogge in net. Tim Wallace would get whistled for slashing and with :03 left in the penalty Jacob Micflikier would score. Then, Brett Sterling would get tagged for a high stick and Michal Jordan would score his first ever AHL goal to cut the lead to 4-2 at 18:10. It would prove to be too little, too late as Charlotte would pull Murphy and Tangradi would get an easy empty netter at 19:02 to secure the 5-2 win.

Three stars were Dustin Jeffrey, Jacob Micflikier and Eric Tangradi in that order.

Late, Bombulie chimed in on Twitter that he hadn’t seen hide nor hair (no pun intended) of Brian Strait. For what it is worth radio didn’t mention anything and I really didn’t see him out there for the third. We’ll have to see.

We were the only teams in the Division skating. The win puts us 10 points to the good on second with 54 points to Charlotte and Norfolk’s 44. Hershey sits in fourth with 43 points. Binghamton sits in 5th with 36 points. Syracuse and Albany sit six-seven with 32 and 28 points respectively. Adirondack is surging out of the cellar and have 22 points.

Rematch tomorrow. Would love to leave Charlotte with a 12 point lead up on the East. Breathing room. It isn’t going to be easy because Charlotte is going to adjust. But the good thing is so will Wilkes-Barre.

One more thing before I go, congrats to head coach John Hynes on being named co-coach of the Western Conference All-Stars later this month in Hershey.

Let’s Go Pens!

AHL Game: 546

Who: Charlotte Checkers

Where: Time Warner Cable Arena

When: 7 p.m. EST

Media Kit

Last Game: This past Saturday home vs. Norfolk the Pens won 4-3. Bryan Lerg continued to fill the net with two goals. For CHA: This past Sunday home vs. the Binghamton Senators the Checkers won 4-2. Oskar Osala had a goal and two assists and was named the games first star.

Last Meeting: Way back on October 17, the Pens won 4-3. Brett Sterling had a goal and an assist and took 8 shots. Dustin Jeffrey had three assists.

Record: For WBS, 26-8-0-0 (52 pts., 1st place East Division) For CHA, 20-11-1-3 (44 pts., 2nd place East Division)

Why you should care: This is not the same Charlotte team from October. This team is much much better. We have played every team in the division at least three times except for Charlotte whom we have only played twice. Wilkes-Barre would love to continue its dominance over the division with a decisive win tonight.

Street Up

I wasn’t going to blog today given the fact that I saw nothing official regarding Ben Street being recalled from Wheeling to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. I had heard about it but saw nothing official.

Until I saw this. Street has indeed been recalled and will be with the team tomorrow and Wednesday in Charlotte.

Let’s speculate. The recall means WBS is down a forward and have no healthy bodies available with Veilleux and Vitale on the shelf. Let’s take it a step further. Street is a winger. Veilleux is a winger but sometimes plays center. Vitale is a center but sometimes plays winger. Veilleux sits and Vitale plays. Makes sense, no?

I guess I have to listen to the pregame show on the radio tomorrow to be sure since I am not flying to Charlotte for these games.

Why not Haddad? This may help answer that question.

Let’s Go Pens!

EDIT: Eric P at the Wilkes-Blog has a story regarding Veilleux’s status from the local news. I don’t even watch the local news. Anyway here is the link, and from it you can click through to the link from the local news. Early estimations are 2-3 weeks.
