No Horses – Pens LOSE 1-0

I hope there isn’t a theme to be had here in that subject line. Pens shutout by one of the teams on the up and up with a ridiculous goaltender in Michael Leighton who, in 4 games, is 2-1 with a 1.16 GAA, .968 SV% and a shutout streak of 1:35:14. (thanks Tim)

One shot is all the Pens needed, but they could not find it and lost 1-0. Veilleux, Lerg and Walker all had chances.

Micheal Leighton vs. Brad Thiessen. No idea was Hynes is thinking going with Thiessen two nights in a row. I suppose you continue to ride the hot hand and give your team it’s best chance to win.

First Period: Pens were given an early power play but could not convert. Erik Gustafsson would score at 14:54 to put the Phantoms ahead. The Pens would have to kill off a Geoff Walker trip, then on the ensuing faceoff a Cach Sill trip to give the Phantoms 1:55 of 5 on 3 time. Then, while killing the 5 on 3, Robert Bortuzzo would get called for slashing. Then when the two trip penalties expired, the penlaty box attendant let the wrong guys out! It was mass chaos.

Second period: What was left of the Bortuzzo slash was killed off. What I liked about the 5 on 3 kill was it was a block party of shots. I would see tons of communicating back and forth between the guys which was good to see. Lots of big hits this period. Zach Sill would catch Denis Hamel in open ice and J.P. Testwuide would board Boulerice. Everyone was fine. Lerg would get a great chance on the backhand in close but couldn’t elevate the puck. Wilkes-Barre would throw the kitchen sink at Leighton but could not crack him this period.

Third period: Quick moving period. Dan Jancevski would get nailed for hooking and the Pens couldn’t do anything with it. That was the only penalty call all period. There would then be about 5 minutes of green flag hockey. Pens would pull Thiessen and with the empty net not manage maybe more than two shots on goal.

Final SOG were 28-18 WBS.

Thoughts: Maybe “not enough horses” isn’t the right term here. After all, Adirondack only had 18 shots on goal. Defense was stout. Just didn’t get that one goal to force overtime or a shootout.

Three Stars: Brad Thiessen (17 saves), Erik Gustafsson (game winning goal, +1), Michael Leighton (28 save shutout)

Around the Division: Oppurtunity lost for Wilkes-Barre as Hershey lost for the first time since 1986 it seems 4-3 to Binghamton. An angry Bears team is a dangerous Bears team, regardless if they will be tired from playing 5 in 7 or whatever it’s been. Albany beat Charlotte in overtime 4-3. Norfolk shuts out Syracuse on back to back nights, this time by a score of 4-0.

Standings: Nothing lost, nothing gained for WBS on Hershey. It’s still 78-70. Norfolk gets to 5 of the bears with 65 points. Charlotte loses a point in the OT loss and is now in fourth with 64 points. Binghamton now has 60 points in fifth. Syracuse / Albany / Adirondack are all withing three points of each other, 42 /41 /39 respectively.

Tomorrow: Only games that matters is Wilkes-Barre / Hershey. I want to see what this current team can do against a great team in Hershey. Albany and Charlotte rematch and Binghamton goes to Adirondack.

Last Game: For WBS: Last night in Bridgeport, the Pens beat the Sound Tigers 2-0. Ben Street and Carl Sneep had goals and Brad Thiessen had the shutout in net. For ADK: Last Saturday in Hamilton, Ontario the Phantoms shutout the Bulldogs 4-0. Veteran Denis Hamel had a hat trick and Michael Leighton had the shutout.

Record: For WBS,  39-14-0-0 (78 pts., 1st place East Division) – For ADK, 16-30-2-3 (37 pts., 8th Place East Division)

Last Meeting: January 21 in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center, the Phantoms won 4-2.

Why you should care: On paper, the Penguins are the best team in the league and the Phantoms the worst. In reality though it’s completely different. ECHL call-up Andrew Orpik is in town and going to play. His development is being fast tracked because of all the injuries / suspensions in Pittsburgh. Wilkes-Barre is just rolling with it and so far, looking good in the process.

Thiessen says No – Pens WIN 2-0 over Bridgeport

With half our team playing in Long Island tonight, Brad Thiessen kept the Sound Tigers out of the net and earned his second shutout of the week as Wilkes-Barre defeated Bridgeport 2-0.

Take nothing away from this game as far as “we can win with half our team in Pittsburgh.” No. Bridgeport has now lost seven in a row, and only dressed 17 skaters tonight.

Brad Thiessen vs. Joel Martin.

First period: Pens had to kill a Bortuzzo hook early and then later Carl Sneep came down the slot to make it 1-0. Shots on goal thru the first were 13-6 for the Penguins.

Second period: Geoff Walker had an early chance that was snuffed out by the ageless Mark Wotton, then Ben Street would score to make it 2-0. Nice assist by Tim Wallace on that one. Second half of this period, the Sopund Tigers would come alive but Thiessen would deny all callers. Shots for the period would be 8-8, but Bridgeport would get more than half of them in the last two minutes it seemed.

Third period: Before AHL commissioner David Andrews, Robin Figren would get robbed by Thiessen in close. For about 15 minutes the Sound Tigers would get chance after chance, but Thiessen would say no. Bridgeport would outshoot us 8-6 this period, but the Pens would hold on and win 2-0, getting Thiessen a 22 save shutout.

Thoughts: Again, Bridgeport is a team totally headed in the wrong direction, you can’t take much away from this. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to get a win, let alone a shutout, but this game should hardly be a blueprint as to what to expect going forward. At least in my opinion.

Three Stars: Joel Martin (25 saves), Carl Sneep (game winning goal, +1), Brad Thiessen (22 saves, shutout)

Around the Division: Keith Aucoin a three point night, Jared DeMichiel his first win in net as the Bears keep rolling, defeating the Providence Bruins 4-3. Norfolk blanked Syracuse 3-0. Bingo did the same to Rochester, 3-0.

Standings: WBS 78, HER 70, CHA 63, NOR 63, BNG 58, SYR 42, ALB 39, ADK 37.

Tomorrow: We get Adirondack tomorrow at Mohegan. Albany is in Charlotte, Hershey hosts Binghamton and Norfolk and Syracuse rematch on Hampton Roads.

Away Game 25

AHL Game: 775

Who: Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Where: Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard

When: 7:00 p.m. EST

Media Kit

Last Game: Tuesday at home vs. the Manitoba Moose the Pens won 4-1. Nick Johnson had a goal in the game to extend his AHL point streak to seven games. For BRI: This past Saturday the Sound Tigers hosted the Springfield Falcons and lost 4-1. Justin DiBenedetto had the lone goal in the loss.

Record: For WBS, 38-14-0-0 (76 pts., 1st place East Division) For BRI, 19-25-3-3 (44 pts., 7th place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: With what seems like half of our team in Pittsburgh on recall, things could get very interesting tonight. Bridgeport is the last place team in the Atlantic Division. However, the Penguins have had trouble with teams they are “supposed to beat.” That said, you can look for a tight game, but with the Sound Tigers turmoil in goal the Penguins should (emphasized) win this one.

Tangradi Up – Tux spotted on I-84 towards Bridgeport

News out of Pittsburgh today indicates that Eric Tangradi has been recalled from Wilkes-Barre to Pittsburgh and will likely dress tonight when the Penguins play the Islanders.

This is a direct result of Dustin Jeffrey getting injured last night and leaving the game in the second period when he crashed into the net. He’s out with the always descript, “lower body injury.”

When your injury replacements are getting injured, that’s never good. When it rains it pours. All that’s left is the mascot it seems!

With the Tangradi call-up, the lines for WBS tonight in Bridgeport will look something like this in my opinion…

Collins-Street-Wallace
Haddad-Lerg-Walker
7th D-Sill-Veilleux
Schnell-Marshall-Boulerice

Who that seventh defenseman that jumps up onto wing could be is anyone’s guess. My initial thought was Bortuzzo or Hutchinson, but you need those guys back on defense more than you need them up on a line crashing and banging. Mormina doesn’t move the puck well. I don’t trust Potter or Wagner on defense, let alone up on a line. Strait is defense first, second and third and Carl Sneep is a rookie defenseman who has been scratched the last two games. I hardly think Hynes pencils him in a line.

Should be an interesting one later at Harbor Yard. Gameday will be up at 3 p.m. today.

Go Pens.

There Goes the Farm!

The old saying of, “there goes the farm” rang true this morning as Pittsburgh recalled four players this morning. Ryan Craig, Nick Johnson, Joe Vitale and Brett Sterling.

For those in Pittsburgh who frequent the blog, let me give you a quick thumbnail of what you are getting:

  1. Brett Sterling (18-21-39 +12) – most lethal offensive threat on the team. Nicknamed by me “The Ticket” to a legitimate Calder Cup run this Spring. A bit undersized at 5’8, but you can’t teach goal scoring ability, and Sterling certainly has that.
  2. Joe Vitale (8-19-27 +12) – no one that I have seen or heard of watches more WBS games than me, other than people directly affiliated with the team or perhaps Jonathan Bombulie of the Citizens’ Voice. No one on Wilkes-Barre works harder than Vitale. The kid is all heart. Usually sees second or third line duties here in Wilkes-Barre, brings speed and intensity every shift. At 5’11 is another undersized center, but he will win more faceoff than he loses. He has the right attitude. You will more than likely be seeing him full time in Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.
  3. Nick Johnson (20-19-39 +12) – his time has come. Leads WBS in scoring. This may be his last chance at NHL work with Pittsburgh. At 6’2 is the right size you need for speed and quickness. Really needs to make the most of this oppurtunity.
  4. Ryan Craig (13-20-33 +6) – our Captain. If I had to pick one of the four call-ups to get scratched, it’s probably Craig. 6’1, 215 center from Western Canada knows how to play the game. If he does dress he won’t be a liability on the ice. Saw 54 games with Tampa Bay a few years ago so the NHL game is not foreign to him.

Does Wilkes-Barre need to worry? No. Offensively we are deep. The defense corps here in WBS is intact. Defense wins you Championships. This is adversity we are dealing with. Time for Wheeling replacements like Ben Street, Joey Haddad and the like to show what they are capable of. In response to the call-ups from Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre recalled Ryan Schnell and David Marshall. (mormally I’d link, but trust me they are here) Bombulie will probably have more later on his blog.

That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger. We will get through this. That’s all I have for now. Let’ s Go Pens!

Wednesday Notes 2/9

Couple of things:

  • Hershey beat Manchester in a shootout tonight 2-1. Scoreless through four rounds, Boyd Kane throws a backhander at goalie Jeff Zatkoff to win it in Round Five. The only backhander in the shootout, puts the Bears within eight points of WBS with two games in hand over the Penguins.
  • Tim Wallace and Eric Tangradi were returned to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton. Of note, Tango deleted his Twitter feed.
  • Sounds like Joe Vitale was recalled to Pittsburgh if you believe this tweet. Good for Joe. You will not find another player give 10,000% every shift.

Could be more guys called up to Pittsburgh tomorrow if Arron Asham and Chris Kunitz aren’t ready to roll romorrow when Pittsburgh hosts Los Angeles tomorrow. Stay with me over on Twitter for immediacy sake.

Go Pens.
