Shorthanded Pens Shutout Moose – WIN 2-0

Missing four of its defensemen to either recall or injury, the Pens come out and smother the Moose defensively and shutout the North Division’s top team 2-0.

Missing are Carl Sneep (injury) Joey Mormina (injury) Steve Wagner (recall) and Corey Potter (recall) yet the Pens dominated the Moose on the shot chart, 38-23.

John Curry v. Eddie Lack. Alex Grant played his first game for WBS this year back from his wrist injury suffered in preseason.

First Period: Early, the fourth line was buzzing. Always a good sign. Pens would get two chances on the power play via a Joel Perrault hold on Ryan Craig and a Ryan Parent trip. No flow on either power play, moreso first power play then second. In the second Eddie Lack was the Moose’s best PK. Pens would get chances with a Ryan Craig mini breakaway. Jesse Boulerice would sit for a hook. but Manitoba’s PP is worse then ours so that was killed easily. Then, late, Robert Bortuzzo would fire a shot on net from the blue line which was rebounded by Keven Veilleux and Geoff Walker cleaned up the mess to put the Pens up 1-0.

First Period thoughts: Really impressed with Alex Grant this period. Kid did not look out of place one iota and looked like he has played 60 games with Wilkes-Barre this season. He is going to be fun to watch.

Second Period: Pens had to kill a Ryan Craig cross check penalty from 20:00 of the first but the Moose would not register a single shot on goal. Brett Sterling rung his second off of the post, he has been snakebit of late in the goal department. You have to think the avalanche is coming and soon. Middle of the second the Pens had what radio called the “shift of the road trip” but it was more like the shift of  the year to me, boy the Pens looked sharp this period. Late, Geoff Walker would turn a puck over to Victor Oreskovich and hooked him down. Later in the penalty kill, Joe Vitale would trip a Moose and the Pens would have to kill a late 5 on 3. They would, but not before Ryan Craig and Brian Strait’s sticks would break.

Second Period thoughts: Pens imposed their will against a very good Manitoba Moose team in the second, limiting the Moose to 9 shots while firing 12 at Lack. Of note, John Hynes was the second intermission guest and, while referring to John Curry, stated that he wanted John to “give him a reason to make him play him Wednesday” – after tonight’s performance look for #36 to get the nod in the cage tomorrow in the rematch.

Third Period: David Marshall would ring a shot off the post. Later, Maintoba had the best chance in the game to tie it, but Chris Collins fed a pass to Bryan Lerg who led a 2 on 1 with Ben Street who received the Lerg pass to make it 2-0 Pens. Moose would pull Lack late but not score and the Pens would hold on for the 2-0 win.

Three Stars: Ben Street (goal, +1), John Curry (23 save shutout) and Eddie Lack (36 saves on 38 shots)

The line of Geoff Walker, Ryan Craig and Keven Veilleux has been the best line for the Pens this month combining for six goals and nine assists. Credit @TonyAndrock for the stat.

The win pushes the Pens to 95 points, seven up on Hershey for second and Manchester for the overall lead with three games in hand on both teams.

This is 5 out of a possible 6 points this road trip including two shutouts by two different goaltenders. I never get in a debate on who is better in goal, but you all have to feel blessed knowing that John Curry and Brad Thiessen are tending the nets in Wilkes-Barre. Both are very very good at what they do.

Around the Division: No one else played.

Standings: Wilkes goes 7-up on Hershey right now with three games in hand. 95 points to the Bears 88. The rest of the East shakes out this way: NOR 81, CHA 80, BNG 75, ALB 60, SYR 55, ADK 54.

Tomorrow: Rematch in Winnipeg between the Moose and Penguins. Binghamton is in Adirondack, Springfield visits Manchester and Charlotte battles Bridgeport in Connecticut.

Good things happening right now in Wilkes-Barre. With Pittsburgh not playing until Sunday, look for Corey Potter and Steve Wagner to be return to the Pens tomorrow.

Away Game 33

AHL Game: 1005

Who: Manitoba Moose

Where: MTS Centre

When: 730 p.m. CDT (that’s 8:30 p.m. Wilkes-Barre time)

Media Kit

Last Game: This past Saturday in Abbotsford, the Pens suffered their first shootout loss of the year 5-4. Wilkes-Barre got two late period third period goals from Brett Sterling and Andrew Hutchinson to tie the game and earn the point. For Manitoba, this past Sunday in Houston against the Aeros, the Moose lost 6-3. Mario Bliznak had a goal and an assist.

Record: For WBS, 46-18-0-1 (93 pts., 1st place East Division) For MTB, 37-24-1-5 (80 pts., 1st place North Division)

Last Meeting: February 8 in Wilkes-Barre, the Pens won 4-1. Ryan Craig and Keven Veilleux both had a goal and assist each.

Why you should care: This is one of the four games in hand Wilkes-Barre has on Hershey this week. The Bears are five points behind us and they say games in hand don’t mean anything if you don’t win them. Manitoba is glad to be home after an eleven game road trip. This will not be a gimmie game for Wilkes-Barre as the Moose are a very tough team from the North Division.Only three points separate the Moose from the third place Hamilton Bulldogs in the North and a guaranteed spot in the playoffs as it looks like the fifth place team from the West Division is crossing over. Both teams can ill afford to lose the game tonight.

Swing and a Miss

I said yesterday that Robert Bortuzzo or Andrew Hutchinson would get called up to Pittsburgh for tonight’s game in Ottawa vs. the Senators.

Well today Pittsburgh announced it called up Corey Potter and Steve Wagner instead. I whiffed on that one big time.

The thought is that Pittsburgh knows that Matt Niskanen isn’t playing tonight because of the flu and the reason you take two defensemen from Wilkes is because Kris Letang took a shot from an Edmonton player late in the third Sunday. My only guess is he won’t go tonight, (EDIT: Paul Martin is missing from practice today according to the Pens Report) thus you call up Potter and Wagner.

Potter’s numbers for those Pittsburgh fans who may not be familiar: 62 GP, 2-25-27 and a +24. His +24 is second in the league for +/-.

Wagner’s numbers for those Pittburgh fans who may not be familiar: 64 GP, 5-21-26 and a +14.

Neither Potter or Wagner fight as much as say a Jesse Boulerice so you shouldn’t expect them to drop the gloves and fight at the drop of a hat. They do know how to scrap however. Both are unrestricted free agents at the end of the year so Pittsburgh figures this is an audition of sorts.

Also, unrelated to the above, I talked up Wilkes-Barre / Scranton with Zach Boslett and the Faceoff Factor recently. The link to the story is here.

Gameday vs. the Moose will be up at 4:30 p.m. today. Preview from the Moose persepctive can be found here.

Go Pens.

Getting Defensive

Watched the Pittsburgh Penguins twitter feed today and among the news that Sidney Crosby skated for the first time since January was the news that Matt Niskanen will not make the trip to Ottawa tomorrow and Pittsburgh needs a defenseman from the farm in Wilkes-Barre.

Niskanen is a right hand shot. In Wilkes-Barre, so too are Robert Bortuzzo and Andrew Hutchinson. If the recall is of a one off variety, call up Robert Bortuzzo. Ottawa is a bad team. See what the kid can do. Nothing official yet from the Pens.

What is official, is it looks like Alex Grant is on his way up from The Nail. You will remember Grant getting boarded by David Dziurzynki at the rookie tournament in London, Ontario in September and breaking his wrist.

More tomorrow here on the blog for the Gameday post vs. the Moose tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Let’s Go Pens!

Sunday Scoreboard 3/13

Traveling home from New Jersey this afternoon but stayed current on the action in the AHL via Twitter. Two games interested me the most.

First, the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Portland Pirates 4-2 for sole possession of first place in the Atlantic. Monarchs are five points behind WBS for the overall top spot in the AHL. Wilkes-Barre has four games in hand against ManchVegas.

Finally, the Hershey Bears earned a point in a shootout loss this afternoon in a 3-2 loss. The Bears are within five points of WBS for the East Division lead. The Penguins have four games on the Bears also.

This week: Hershey is off until Friday and the Pens give two games in hand back as they take on the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday and Wednesday. Manchester hosts Springfield on Wednesday.

Let’s Go Pens!

Point Taken – Pens LOSE in Shootout to Heat 5-4

First time for everything tonight as the Pens lost their first shootout of the year, 5-4.

This is a point I will take because with under two minutes left to play, the Pens are down 4-2 and looking like they are going to lose this one.

Brad Thiessen vs. J-P Lamoureux – WBS went with the same lineup as last night.

First Period: Heat head coach Jim Playfair sent his team home last night with no morning skate in the morning. Radio said that he was really disappointed in the teams effort from last night and the Heat received the message coming out flying on Wilkes-Barre to start the game. 3:30 in, Ryan MacMurchy scores to put the Heat up 1-0. Late in the first though, you could see WBS coming. No way that Abbotsford would be able to hold the Pens back all game like this.

Second Period: Andrew Hutchinson worked some time in the video room this afternoon with Head Coach John Hynes going over things on the power play and it worked as a bomb from the point by him was collected in the slot via rebound by hometown boy Ryan Craig to tie the score at 1. Penguins would hit two posts this period then John Armstrong would score. Zach Sill fought John Negrin as that happened and I thought that Sill had probably one of his best games as a Penguin. As I was getting my Media Kit out to see what the Pens record was when trailing after two periods, Joe Vitale scored to tie the score at 2-2.

Third Period: Josh Myers would score even strength then Greg Nemisz would fire a shot at the net from the blueline which Quintin Laing would deflect in on the power play to put the Heat up 4-2. Then with under two minutes left to play in the hockey game Hynes calls his time out, pulls Thiessen and Brett Sterling scores from an odd angle. Empty net again, Andrew Hutchinson would score to even the game.

Wow. Did not think the Pens could get two goals that quick like that.

Overtime: Pens had a great chance when Ben Street forechecked a Heat player so hard Brett Sterling stole a puck from him but couldn’t find anyone to pass it to who would shoot and Abbotsford had it’s best chance when Ben Street turned the puck over at center ice where the Heat would come in on a two on one but not score.

Shootout: Ales Kotalik, down from parent Calgary and veteran of a lot on NHL games was the only one to score in the shootout for the Heat and that was your ball game.

Three Stars: Ryan Stone (-1, 5 SOG), Andrew Hutchinson (goal, 2 assists, +2) and Greg Nemisz (2 assists, -1)

Around the Division: Hershey beat Adirondack 3-2 in overtime. Albany beat Springfield 2-1. Binghamton beat Charlotte 3-1 and Syracuse beat Rochester 3-2.

Elsewhere: Manchester creamed Bridgeport 7-0 and Portland beat Providence 5-4.

Standings: Huge point by WBS taken tonight. 93-87 and a six point lead up on the Bears. Hershey keeps chipping, and chipping and chipping away at the lead. Charlotte has 80 points in third. Norfolk has 79 in fourth. Bingo 75 in fifth and Albany, Syracuse and Adirondack are playing out the string trying to figure out who finishes last with 58, 55 and 52 points between the three respectively.

Tomorrow: Norfolk is in Hershey. Bad blood between these teams from the last time they played when Aucoin was injured. Manchester travels to Portland. I will have a blog about it all tomorrow evening.

Where: Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre

When: 7:00 p.m. PST (that’s 10 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre)

Media Kit

Last Game /Last Meeting: Last night against the Heat, the Pens shutout Abbotsford 4-0. All four lines had a goal scorer and Brad Thiessen earned his AHL leading 7th shutout.

Record: For WBS, 46-18-0-0 (92 pts., 1st place East Division) — For ABB, 31-26-4-5 (71 pts., 5th place North Division)

Why you should care: Wilkes Barre came out and responded to the bad loss put on them Tuesday by the Connecticut Whale and utterly dominated the Heat last night. Look for that trend to continue tonight with slight adjustments on both sides.
