Wheeling for Hire

Terrible news within the organization. Nailers beat writer Shawn Rine dropped a bombshell on Twitter last night stating that the Wheeling Nailers are on the selling block. Nothing confirmed at this point, but all signs point to this being the last season in Wheeling. Here is his story from The Intelligencer today.

Bombulie had his take here.

I could not imagine the day that would come in which I learned that the Penguins were defecting from Wilkes-Barre. The old truth is though it is part of being a minor league fan and really happens all the time. It’s sad really.

Elsewhere, since there hasn’t been a blog update since Monday, the following caught my eye:

–> The fan blog Admirals Roundtable caught up with AHL Commissioner David Andrews. When you ask me what I strive for in blogging, the Ads Roundtable is it. They are the gold standard for blogs from the fan perspective.

–> The AHL reached an agreement with ESPN America to broadcast AHL games overseas. Kinda cool, if you want to keep up with your favorite AHL team from Germany.

–> In ex-WBS Penguin news, Dan Henningson signed a PTO with the Binghamton Senators and Joey Haddad was released from his PTO with Bridgeport and reassigned to his ECHL club, Gwinnett.

–> Here is an interesting read regarding the Fort Wayne Komets from the Central Hockey League. The possibility exists that Fort Wayne who is second in minor league hockey attendance only to the Hershey Bears and others in that league could defect from the CHL and move into the ECHL. I, for one, would love to see a 30/30/30 NHL/AHL/ECHL affiliation grouping.

–> Finally, the Pens tweeted this afternoon that Saturday’s game vs. Syracuse is sold out. Good times.

Let’s Go Pens!

Second Quarter Grades

Pens met the halfway point of the season with a 3-2 win Saturday night in Newfoundland and were 11-7-0-1 during the second quarter. No stats from Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win in St. John’s are figured into the stats below unless otherwise noted.

In keeping with the First Quarter Grades we will break this down by Forwards, Defense and Goaltenders. Anyone who got a sweater gets a grade.

My humble take…:

Forwards:

Nick Petersen: I said in the First Quarter Grades that Petersen was a rookie that the coaches trusted. Played 16 out of 19 games so the trust is still there, but sometimes looks like a rookie. Went 3-4-7 in second quarter and maintained his +6 rating. Grade: B

Brian Gibbons: Sometimes I forget he is on this team. Scored 1-2-3 and just a +1. Brought in to score, and hasn’t in this quarter. Need him to start filling the score sheet and quick. Grade: D

Ben Street: Is one of the threats to score on a nightly basis. Produced 9-5-14 in the second quarter. Can be a point a game type of player. Grade: A

Zach Sill: Scored 4 goals in the second quarter. Game isn’t flash, but grit. Can and will knock your enforcer out. Grade: B+

Colin McDonald: Team’s point leader and All-Star representative. Had a brief call-up to Pittsburgh. Went 4-5-9 during the second quarter. Won’t get 42 goals like he had with Oklahoma City last season, but still can put up points. Grade: A

Geoff Walker: Played every game this quarter. 5-6-11 to show for it. He’s a complete player who is a reliable asset to any team. Grade: A

Jason Williams: Runs an anemic power play. Do you fault him or is he a victim of systems? 1-7-8 in quarter two. Said in First Quarter Grades that if he gets hot he could stay hot. Still waiting… Grade: C

Bryan Lerg: 6-5-11 in the second quarter. Can certainly make a case that he was snubbed from All-Stars, but playing in a division with Hershey and Norfolk numbers like these aren’t going to get you there. Fine by Lerg as he still is an effective player. Grade: A-

Ryan Craig: Heart and soul of this team and is the reason the “C” is pinned on his chest. 3-7-10 during second quarter of season. Grade: B+

Matt Rust: This is actually his first quarter, as he only managed four games in the first 19 WBS games. Is 2-5-7 overall. Will need to get on the score sheet more if the team is going to have ultimate success. Grade: B

Brandon DeFazio: Sometimes he is scratched. I don’t think he should ever be scratched. I think he is the oil that keeps this engine going. Grade: B+

Eric Tangradi: Is currently getting an extended look in Pittsburgh. May be his last chance to prove he has what it takes at the NHL level. Here, played 14 games and went 6-5-11. Grade: A

Paul Thompson: Usually either he, DeFazio or Thompson are scratched. 4-5-9 for Thompson in the second quarter. Grade: B

Ryan Schnell: With Steve MacIntyre coming to town today his job may not be safe as the teams enforcer. One assist in 11 games overall. Grade: C

Cody Chupp: Is here because Tangradi is up. No other reason. Although I thought he’d be back in my First Quarter Grades. Grade: Incomplete

Defensemen:

Joey Mormina: Came back from injury Saturday. Made immediate impact by scoring a goal. He’s all defense, but when he scores it is an added bonus. Lower grade because of missed games. Grade: C

Carl Sneep: Is injured. Going to need him back if there’s going to be a run deep into the playoffs. Grade: C

Philip Samuelsson: Learning on the fly which will ultimately make him a better player in the long term but sometimes makes a boneheaded play that makes you cringe. Still believe that if the defense heals, he will go to Wheeling. Grade: B

Cody Wild: Brought in on a try-out and stuck. Mainly due to the bevy of injuries, but when the blueline finally heals will stick around. Grade: B

Robert Bortuzzo: Was hurt in Pittsburgh. When he came back was a big help on the blue line here which proves how big he was missed here. Grade: B+

Brian Strait: Due to injury and recall, has only played 15 games this season with 1-5-6 and a +5. Is an anchor here. His presence is definitely felt when he is in and out of the lineup. Grade: B

Alex Grant: Is the top point getter on the Wilkes-Barre blue line. This is a matter of happenstance as his game more of an offensive defenseman. Is another  player who could end up in Wheeling if Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre’s blue line is healthy. Grade: B+

Alexandre Picard: Is injured. Another player who needs to get healthy quick if this team has any hope of making a deep run come May. Grade: B-

Simon Despres: The player on the Penguins with the biggest NHL pedigree lies with Despres. Is injured with Pittsburgh. Will come back then we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Pittsburgh at the trade deadline. Grade: B

Gone but not forgotten…

The following are players who played during the second quarter. Guys like Devin DiDiomete aren’t listed here because he only played two games in the first quarter.

Niko Dimitrakos: Came back from overseas with the intention of playing in the NHL. When that did not pan out for him, he went back over. Shame, because he could have been successful here if he didn’t mind riding buses.

Chris Barton: I was excited when he got here because I wanted to see what he could do at the AHL level. Barton had success in Wheeling but hasn’t found the same results in Wilkes-Barre. If he comes back, it may be on a third or fourth line role only.

Steve MacIntyre: Is coming back and fans hope that he does more of this.

Goaltenders:

I am not savvy enough in the math department to give you the second quarter goals against or save percentage. I am sure I could figure it out if someone paid me, but sadly I do this for free.

Scott Munroe: At times has outplayed Thiessen. 15 games played with an 7-3-2 record with three shutouts. Has a 2.44 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage. Yesterday’s win vs. St. John’s not factored into these stats. Grade: A

Brad Thiessen: Is slumping. Not the same goaltender we saw last year. Is it a product of a younger defense? I am starting to think yes, but Thiessen is a smart enough netminder to understand this and adjust, no? Is 14-10-2 with 2 shutouts and a 2.88 GAA with a 0.884 SV%. Grade: C

Comment section is open to tell me how harsh I was on your favorite player or how lenient I was on a player who draws your ire.

Let’s Go Pens!

Successful Road Trip IceCapped – Pens WIN 4-3 in OT

Pens win again on the road capping off a perfect six point road trip with a 4-3 win in overtime in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Pens will play their 1,000th regular season game this Friday when they host the Manchester Monarchs.

Scott Munroe vs. Edward Pasquale – Peter Merth was in for Philip Samuelsson and Ryan Schnell was in for Cody Chupp. Tom Grace did not elude to a Samuelsson injury but an eyewitness in St. John’s tweeted me that during his penalty on Carl Klingberg which awarded Klingberg a penalty shot last night, that Samuelsson looked to have taken a skate to the shoulder / collarbone area. We’ll have to see this week if anything is made out of it.

First Period: Great flow back and forth between the teams last night spilled into the opening period of today’s game. Then a controversial moment, with the Pens on the power play as Geoff Walker appeared to have scored but referee Tim Mayer ruled that the puck never crossed the goal line. The goal light never came on and the replays were inconclusive to me on AHL Live. Then, Bryan Lerg would score shorthanded with Alex Grant in the penalty box for a cross check. This was the second shorthander for Lerg in as many games and ties him with Hershey’s Chris Bourque for the AHL league lead (nice find, Mike O’Brien) Then, Robert Bortuzzo would rip a shot off from the point which rebounded to Paul Thompson who scored.

Second Period: IceCaps would come out guns blazing and Spencer Machacek would score to bring the score to 2-1. IceCaps would continue to knock on the door, but Munroe held the fort. Then, Geoff Walker would wait out Pasquale and score on the power play to push it to 3-1. Pens would continue to stave off most threats by St. John’s this period but the score would remain 3-1.

Third Period: Really weird sequence about five minutes into the period. Joey Mormina would dive to break up a scoring chance by Carl Klingberg and would trip Klingberg. IceCaps PP. Then, Bryan Lerg would do the same thing, only this time to ex-Penguin Jason DeSantis. 5×3 for St. John’s. They would use their time out. Then, off the faceoff, Ryan Craig would dive on the puck and get whistled for delay of game. But wait, they weren’t done! Brian Strait would go to the box on a hooking call. Credit to play-by-play man Tom Grace for math on the fly. Penguins would have to kill periods of :04, :55 and 1:05 of 5 on 3 consecutively. Then, Spencer Machacek would get nabbed for holding to negate the extended two-man disadvantage for the Pens. When it was all said and done, all penalties would get killed and the score would remain 3-1.

Going to a second paragraph here. St. John’s would even the score at three. Ben Maxwell would bring St. John’s to one, then Jason Jaffray 1:04 later would tie it on a power play. Things would settle, the IceCaps would look for the go ahead, but the Pens would make sure the game went to overtime.

Overtime: Scott Munroe made a save on a Zach Redmond shot, I think I saw Jason Williams block a shot then start the rush the other way. Joey Mormina would blast a shot from the far wall which deflected to Street in for the game winner.

What a story for Mormina, who was injured earlier in the game when a puck rolled up his stick and into his face and Street, who has family in St. John’s to end the successful road trip for the Penguins.

Three Stars: 3) Jason Williams (two assists, +2) 2) Jason Jaffray (goal, -1) and 1) Ben Street (game winning overtime goal, assist, +1)

Around the Division: Worcester beats Syracuse 4-3 in a shootout. Binghamton loses in Bridgeport, 3-.

Standings: Hershey leads with 55 points. Norfolk and the Penguins nipping at the Bears heels with 49 points each. Syracuse separating itself from Binghamton with 39 points to the defending champions 34.

Conference: 1-HER (55) 2-StJ (50) 3-CT (44) 4-NOR (49) 5-WBS (49) 6-WOR (45) 7-MCH (44) 8-ADK (42)

Pens will fly home tomorrow and will probably either have a light skate Tuesday or off and get back into the swing of things Wednesday but never fear! I have the Second Quarter Grades queued up ready to go for noon Monday. That should hold you until midweek when I’ll have something to blog about by then, hopefully.

Last Game / Last Meeting: Last night, the Pens won a thrill a minute game 6-4 on three shorthanded goals. Bryan Lerg had two goals and an assist for the Pens in the win, while Brett Festerling had a goal and an assist and was +2 for the IceCaps in the loss.

Record: For WBS: 21-12-1-4 (47 pts., 3rd place East Division) — For StJ: 22-10-4-1 (49 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Rematch in less than 24 hours for the Pens and IceCaps. Expect Scott Munroe vs. Edward Pasquale in goal. IceCaps remain an elite team, if the Pens could skate out of Newfoundland with four points, this would be a great thing.

One, Two, Three Shorties – Pens WIN 6-4

Pens get three shorthanded goals in this game including a penalty shot from Ben Street to win this back and forth game 6-4.

Peter Merth and Ryan Schnell are the extras. Nick Petersen is home. I erroneously identified Petersen as missing in the game tweets. He is technically “day to day” with an ailment. Joey Mormina returned from injury.

Brad Thiessen vs. David Aebischer

First Period: IceCaps would strike first after a failed clear by the Penguins and a turnover from Kendall McArdle to put the IceCaps up 1-0. Right after, Arturs Kulda took a penalty off the faceoff for a high stick. On the ensuing power play, Bryan Lerg scored off a nice cross ice pass from Paul Thompson to even things at 1-1. A nice answer goal by the Pens.

Second Period: Zach Sill digs a puck away from an IceCap behind Aebischer’s net and shovels it to Ryan Craig who scores on the open net. Then it would be the IceCaps to score right back when Brett Festerling was in the right place at the right time when Jason King took a puck off of a Penguin and fired it at Thiessen, who was unsuspecting to what was going on. He actually was standing up when the puck went in. Just a realy fluky goal by the Pens. Then, with the Pens killing off of a Matt Rust hook, Ben Street would get hauled down on a breakaway. He would be awarded a penalty shot and would score on it. Only the third time in WBS history that the Pens would score on a penalty shot (Rico Fata in Binghamon in January 2006, Dustin Jeffrey against Manitoba in Winnipeg in October 2009). Jonathan Bombulie had this gem of a tweet:

Third Period: Philip Samuelsson hauls down Carl Klingberg on a breakaway and Klingberg would get a penalty shot. Thiessen would make a kick save to keep things 3-2. Ben Maxwell would score right after to even things at three. Then, Cody Chupp would get whistled for boarding and the Pens would score two shorthanded goals on a Ben Street pickoff in the St. John’s offensive zone and would rush in with Bryan Lerg who scored backhanded. Then, on the same penalty kill :21 later, Mormina would score on a drop pass from Lerg to make it 5-3. Jason Gregoire would score with 5:26 left to bring St. John’s back withing one but that would be the closest they would get as with Aebischer pulled, Ryan Craig would score an empty net goal.

Big win, Big, big win for the Pens. They rematch tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Wilkes-Barre time.

Three Stars: 3) Spencer Machacek (assist, -1) 2) Jason Gregoire (goal, assist, -1) and 1) Bryan Lerg (two goals, assist, -1)

Around the Division: Hershey scores four unanswered goals in the third period to comeback and win 6-4 in Binghamton. Norfolk breaks a 2-2 deadlock in the third vs. Connecticut to win 4-2 in Hampton Roads and Syracuse wins 3-2 in a shootout in Albany.

Standings: Bears are overall AHL leaders with 55 points. Norfolk has 49 points in second, Penguins with 47 points in third. Pesky Syracuse now is nine back with 38 points and Binghamton has 34 points.

Conference: 1-HER (55) 2-StJ (49) 3-CT (44) 4-NOR (49) 5-WBS (47) 6-MCH (44) 7-WOR (43) 8- ADK (42)

Last Game: Tuesday in Norfolk, the Pens won 3-2. Ben Street had a goal and an assist in the win. For St. John’s, Wednesday at home the beat the Toronto Marlies 3-2. Captain Jason Jaffray had a goal and two assists in the victory.

Record: For WBS: 20-12-1-4 (45 pts., 3rd place East Division) — For StJ: 22-9-4-1 (49 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Pens get to matchup against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference not named Hershey. This will be an interesting test to see how Wilkes-Barre stacks up against one of the AHL’s elite.
