AHL Power Rankings: Week 20

There are just two months remaining in the season and there are teams solidifying themselves as playoff contenders, teams making a push and teams that you can write off. We try to make sense of it all in this weeks version of the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings.

The Troy Mann Effect is being felt. Three teams that once employed Mann are in the top five this week leading off with the Bakersfield Condors who are turning some heads and are trying to make a run at the 28 games that the Norfolk Admirals won in a row a few years back. Fifteen wins in a row now for Bakersfield. Is it a fluke? Is sixteen a real streak? It’s going to be interesting to see how far this group of characters can go.

The Hershey Bears are back, jack. Fifteen game point streak for the Bears heading into the Facebook Watch game of the week against Wilkes-Barre Friday.

We don’t do ties here, but if we did, Rochester and Syracuse would be locked at the hip.

Grand Rapids remains fourth and Belleville debuts this week in the top five. Go past the Senators to see where your favorite team ended up.

Last Week: BAK 7 @ ONT 6, ONT 1 @ BAK 2 (OT)
Fifteen straight wins for Bakersfield, tied for fourth longest winning streak of all time. Bakersfield is winning offensive road game explosions like Friday and tight home game contests like Saturday. Impressive.

Record: 27-20-3-3

Free fall continues; 2-6-1-1 in their last ten, we think that the Roadrunners may be OK, but then see who they face twice this week at home.

+1

This Week: vs. BAK 2/23, vs. BAK 2/25
Record: 25-17-4-2

22

Last Week: MIL 6 @ MTB 5, MIL 2 @ MTB 3
With things as tight as they are in the Central, no team is really out of it, but Milwaukee would be better if they were in the upper four of the division instead of the bottom four. A good chance to make up ground this weekend.

+1

This Week: @ CLE 2/22, @ CLE 2/24, @ TEX 2/27
Record: 23-21-9-1

23

Last Week: LAV 4 @ BNG 3, LAV 5 @ BNG 2, LAV 3 @ BEL 4 (OT), LAV 2 @ SYR 4

Record: 25-23-3-2

26

Last Week: COL 2 @ STK 5, COL 3 @ STK 6, STK 3 @ ONT 4

Record: 21-25-4-1

27

Last Week: SA 1 @ GR 5, SA 2 @ GR 3 (OT), SA 2 @ RFD 5
Things being as tight as they are in the Central, a point out of three games this week is not going to be good for any team. For San Antonio, it means last place this week. Busy weekend ahead on the West Coast.

If not for nothing, at least the Reign battled this week the top team in the AHL twice and even picked up a win Wednesday against Stockton.

Impressive week two weeks ago, then Binghamton goes out and lays an egg twice against a Laval team who held the Devils without a shot in the first period on Saturday. Belleville comes in riding a 12 game point streak. Time to take a stand on the Southern Tier.

-10

This Week: vs. BEL 2/22, vs. UTI 2/23, vs. SYR 2/26
Record: 23-27-5-0

30

Last Week: CHA 4 @ SPR 1, TOR 3 @ SPR 1, SPR 5 @ PRO 1
Springfield’s playoff hopes are slowly fading, but a win over Providence Sunday gives them hope. Two this week on the road.

-4

This Week: @ HFD 2/22, @ BRI 2/23
Record: 22-22-6-4

31

Last Week: CLE 2 @ BEL 1 (SO), CLE 2 @ BEL 4, CLE 4 @ UTI 5 (OT), CLE 2 @ RCH 4
Picked up a win and a loser point this week. That’s not going to cut it for a team on the outside looking in. A pair at home against Milwaukee that are pretty important.

-2

This Week: vs. MIL 2/22, vs. MIL 2/24
Record: 24-23-6-1

Have a great week everyone!
