AHL Power Rankings: Mid-October 2019

You know as I was doing these first Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings for the 2019-20 season, I kind of missed doing these weekly. However, for now, I am committed to running these bi-weekly as opposed to weekly to start. If you really want these to go back to weekly, let me know down in the comments section and I’ll see what I can do. The Power Rankings portion of the blog content is the most up in the air feature I have here. It isn’t going away, I just don’t know where to put it or when to run it anymore.

Anyway, with that out of the way, it’s time to see where your favorite team sits two weeks into the season. There are two undefeated teams and two teams still sitting on preseason points (0).

The Marlies, of course, are the early class of the field. Toronto is out to a 4-0 start after a pair of wins over Manitoba and victories over Belleville and Hershey to start the season.

The San Antonio Rampage, yes, the Rampage, are out to a 3-0-0-1 start and lead the Central Division which is as wide open as far as where you’d expect contenders to be early on.

Utica is the other undefeated team in the league and are third. You have to like the early start that the Comets are on.

Iowa hits the ground running and are out to a great start as well and are fourth and the surprise leader at the top of the Atlantic are the Hartford Wolf Pack which round out the top five.

Hit the jump past the Wolf Pack if you didn’t link in direct to see where your favorite team sits just two weeks into this early season.

Yay! Welcome back! I am a fan of AHL hockey (all hockey really). I keep my own running rankings over the course of the year and I wouldn’t bother with doing it more than once every 2 weeks. The unique schedule of the AHL – where teams play slightly fewer games every week, not to mention they often may have only played 1 or 2 other teams over the course of that week – make it super tough to assess any momentum or change that’s taken place over such a short interval of time.

One suggestion is to include in your analysis other information other than just the game scores. It’s great to post them, but in your discussion on the team I’d suggest talking about what’s driving this team (or not). You could talk about key players, changes to the roster, special teams stats, anything really. It’s just a suggestion to strengthen the piece and if you’re going to do them every 2 weeks then you have more time to consider and prepare. :-). for these first ones, it would have been great to compare to where the team was at at the end of last season (like where they finished in their Division or in your rankings) and what’s changed with their roster, at least key gains and losses. There’s so much turn-over in the AHL – and especially this year I think we’re going to see a changing of the guard of dominant teams. That said, some of the usual suspects are still gonna be there (including the always competitive Marlies, whom I cheer for). I’ll post my current rankings in a separate reply, as food for thought. 🙂

It’s super early to start these, so kudos on being ambitious. In 2 weeks post some of these are going to look mighty silly but such is the nature of early season rankings (esp if you focus on records). I’d have waited for at least 3 weeks to have passed (til like now maybe) to even assess where teams are at.

Bex’ AHL Power Rankings (Oct 29)
    1. Utica (18/19: 26th) Not only undefeated, but scoring over 5 and allowing fewer than 2 goals per game! Tops in the best Division in the AHL.
    2. Toronto (18/19: 9th)
    3. Stockton (18/19: 23rd)
    4. Ontario (18/19: 28th) These two Pacific teams who missed the playoffs last spring are stocked with young scorers and are finally getting goaltending. Watch out!
    5. Hartford (18/19: 30th) Could go next to last to next to first in one year. Stocked with young talent from the net out.
    6. Iowa (18/19: 13th)
    7. Tucson (18/19: 18th)
    8. Grand Rapids (18/19: 22nd)
    9. Syracuse (18/19: 2nd) Many of the same players are back; they just need their goaltending to come together which it will.
    10. Cleveland (18/19: 17th) Will be fighting all year for a playoff spot but can feast on out-of-division games.
    11. Providence (18/19: 12th)
    12. Charlotte (18/19: 1st) AHL champions limp out of the gate but their goaltending will come around. Not as dominant as last year but still a great team.
    13. Bakersfield (18/19: 3rd) Tough schedule time start with 50% of games vs #3 team. But make no mistake this is still a great team.
    14. Springfield (18/19: 24th) Have started strong – but Falcons always start strong. Talk to me in January and I’ll put them in the Top-10 at that time.
    15. San Antonio (18/19: 29th)
    16. Rochester (18/19: 4th)
    17. Chicago (18/19: 5th)
    18. Milwaukee (18/19: 11th)
    19. Lehigh Valley (18/19: 16th)
    20. Hershey (18/19: 7th)
    21. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (18/19: 20th)
    22. Colorado (18/19: 15th)
    23. San Jose (18/19: 6th)
    24. Belleville (18/19: 21st)
    25. Laval (18/19: 27th)
    26. Binghamton (18/19: 31st)
    27. Texas (18/19: 19th)
    28. Bridgeport (18/19: 8th)
    29. Manitoba (18/19: 14th)
    30. Rockford (18/19: 25th) New season, same problems. This team can’t score. Once again dead last in offence.
31, San Diego (18/19: 10th) The biggest drop of any team and the final team without a point to start the season. Dallas Eakins is gone and he took his best players with him. Good for Anaheim, bad for their affiliate.

very insightful. thanks. i like the blurbs too. i don’t compare this year to previous because of roster and sometimes affiliation turnover. every year is a fresh start for all 31 teams. you may see something similar on thursday. if you are interested in collaborating, drop me an e-mail please. thanks again!
