So we are at the All-Star break scheduled for this weekend in Ontario, California. You’d be surprised how many people confuse the Ontario Reign and think they are located in Canada, when they are really located in Southern California.
Anyway, there hasn’t been any change to the top team this week as the Milwaukee Admirals are making it look easy. They are a win away from thirty, and still haven’t lost ten. Odds on favorite for a Calder Cup? That’s for you to decide.
Belleville has finally gotten the love from the Politburo they deserve and are the number two team. Did we get a Calder Cup preview when the Senators visited the Admirals this past Tuesday?
Tucson has hit a rough stretch by their high standards and because we don’t do ties here, Hartford and Hershey round out the top five but are at this point two identical teams which lead their division.
Click through if you didn’t link in direct to see where your favorite team ended up this week.

This Belleville Senators team is criminally underrated and shouldn’t be. They are a loaded, dangerous team loaded with a hell of a coach. It’s going to be fun to watch them battle with Utica, who they see twice before the All-Star break, for the division lead. |

Bears seem to have cooled from their run from a few weeks ago, just 6-4 in the last ten. Rematch in Springfield Friday then head to Providence before the break. Are tied with Hartford for division lead but could have company in the form of either Charlotte or Providence quick. |

Thunderbirds are a tenacious bunch, as evidenced Sunday in Providence where they score two with :40 to play to force overtime and win over the Bruins. A point out of fourth as we head into the break. Three straight with Hartford after the break will make for a decent measuring stick. |

Nice recap. It’s going to be interesting going into the home stretch of the season and see what teams that should be better are able to right their ships (Syracuse, Bakersfield, and especially Toronto come to mind) and what surprise teams may fall off the pace (hello Hartford, Utica, and Springfield). Cases could be made for several other teams.
Comparing your rankings to mine, we had a lot of similarity thru the Top-9 (although I have each of Stockton (1st in Goals For (GF) and up to 12th now in Goals Allowed (GA) plus top 3 in both special teams) and Charlotte (7th in both GF and GA and also top 3 in special teams) 3 places above where you have them in your rankings, at #3 and #5 respectively). It’s after that when things started to get wonky. We’re in very different places on a few teams.
I am much higher on: Providence (#9 in my rankings vs #23 – 5th in GA and 13th in GF); Colorado (#11 on mine vs #22 – 9th in GF; 15th in GA); Syracuse (#15 vs #28 – 5th in GF); Bakersfield (#19 vs #24 – 15th in GF); and Toronto (#22 vs #27 – 8th in GF). I reckon that most, if not all, of these teams will be in the dance come end of season despite some of their recent struggles, particularly related to goaltending (especially for Bakersfield, Syracuse and Toronto).
Conversely, you’re much higher on Utica (#7 vs #13 in my rankings – sorta funny as we were reversed a couple months ago); Binghamton (#10 vs #21 on my list); Ontario (#12 vs #23); Grand Rapids (#18 vs #24); Lehigh Valley (#17 vs #26); and San Antonio (#21 vs #28). Other than perhaps Ontario (if things break right and Cal Peterson can stay hot, I don’t see any of these teams making the playoffs come April. Whether it’s offence, defence, or special teams, these are all seriously flawed teams. All the teams are bottom third in the AHL *both* offensively and defensively (with the exception of Lehigh Valley’s and GA).
In case you’re wondering – I have your Pens at #18 (1 spot above where you have them). They’ll need a hot stretch and a few breaks to make the playoffs, but it’s possible.
