A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Brad’s Back 6/30

Quick blurb on this because the weather is nice and my pool is calling.

Pittsburgh announced this morning that they have re-signed Brad Thiessen to a one-year contract.

With Tomas Vokoun already inked as backup to Marc-André Fleury for next season, it looks like Thiessen will be sticking around for another year in Wilkes-Barre.

Chatter on Twitter whether Thiessen would get claimed off waiver wire in the Fall. I don’t think so. If another NHL team wanted him they would have got him today, tomorrow or yesterday.

Saw someone retweet this from Dave Molinari who covers the Penguins for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Can’t say I disagree with that.

The 2012 Offseason Moves chart has been updated as well. Be sure to bookmark this on the eve of NHL Free Agency.

Business is picking up.

Qualified. Not Qualified. Here’s $4.50

Updating the blog with the list of Penguins players who received qualifying offers:

Robert Bortuzzo, Alex Grant, Matt Niskanen, Carl Sneep, Brian Strait, Eric Tangradi and Keven Veilleux.

And those who didn’t:

Cal O’Reilly, Mattias Modig, Alexandre Picard, Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Boris Valabik.

Two things: 1) Surprised Pittsburgh qualified Veilleux. He needs to stay healthy this year. 2) Read somewhere (can’t remember where) that Pittsburgh will try to re-sign O’Reilly as a free agent.

For a list of players who did not receive qualifying offers from the other 29 NHL teams and are now unrestricted free agents, check out Bridgeport Sound Tigers beat writer Mike Fornabaio’s list.

Jonathan Bombulie has outdone himself. Here is a list of 450 AHL free agents. 450! I can’t imagine the work put into the digging and researching each player Bombulie put into this. That is why he (and Fornabaio) are the best at what they do. (along with Leone, Eminian, Lindsay, etc…)

Free Agency begins Sunday. Seems weird that it would start Sunday. Will do my best to keep things updated here on the blog. Immediate reactions on Twitter. I’m on Facebook too, still trying to figure out why they call it a “status update”

Stay cool.

NHL Draft Day 2 Recap

Going to, like yesterday, take my best shot at recapping the second day of the NHL Draft Saturday afternoon.

Pittsburgh drafted seven more guys yesterday. They are, Teddy Blueger, Oskar Sundqvist, Matthew Murray, Matia Marcantuoni*, Sean Maguire, Clark Seymour and Anton Zlobin.

Analysis from Twitter from draft guru Jesse Marshall from Faceoff-Factor:

Blueger:

Blueger will head to Minnesota State.

Sundqvist:

Murray:

Marcantuoni:

Read the Pittsburgh official release on these and the rest of the guys drafted.

Here’s Eric P’s read on the second day Penguins draft day complete with his own analysis of the players taken.

Wilkes-Barre put together an audio draft archive if you want to take a listen.

Penguins Development Camp will be sometime in July. I would like to know when, because this interests me enough to want to go out and take the activities in person.

Outside of anymore guys jumping overseas, the next flurry of activity here on the blog will most likely be July 1 when Free Agency starts. Pens beat writer Jonathan Bombulie will have his list of AHL Free Agents over at the Penguins Insider. Always a fun read.

Check me out on Twitter as always, let’s be friends on Facebook too. I am slowly warming up to it.

Stay cool.

* – actually thought when Marcantuoni was drafted that Pittsburgh drafted a guy by the name of “Matthew Macaroni”

NHL Draft Recap Day 1

I’m in over my head on this one.

The NHL Draft is all about prospects and guys whom, for the casual fan, you never heard of 48 hours ago. Count me as among the casual fan in this category. I could name two prospects in this years draft: Nail Yakupov, who went #1 overall to Edmonton and Malcolm Subban, who is a goalie and PK Subban’s brother. That’s it, that’s the list.

But there was way too  much moving and shaking going on from the Penguins perspective which I felt the need I had to discuss and share with you. It’s better than nothing, I say, so here goes:

–> Pittsburgh traded away Jordan Staal last night to the Carolina Hurricanes for Carolina’s #8 pick in the draft, Brandon Sutter and Brian Domoulin.

–> With the #8 pick, they selected Derrick Pouliot. Here’s a profile of him from Pittsburgh.

–> Then, at pick #22, they selected Olli Maata. Here’s more on the kid from Pittsburgh.

–> Finally, the Penguins traded Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix for Harrison Ruopp, Marc Chevrie and a third round pick.

Of the names above, you will not see Brandon Sutter in Wilkes-Barre. He’s an NHLer. Of the names above, Domoulin and Chevrie are names you will more likely see in WBS this season.

Here’s analysis from people smarter than me that know more about the names above. Domoulin first:

Jesse Marshall runs Faceoff Factor and knows his stuff better than some of the talking heads on TV.

Paul Branecky is the Charlotte Checkers Director of Digital Media.

Maata:

Chevrie (who is a restricted free agent):

Anytime you have a question about a goaltender. Any goaltender, you ask the Goalie Guild. They know it all.

Jonathan Bomblie had nice synopses of all the moves. Ruopp is a year away from turning pro, and has a side of grit to him, which is needed desperately because none of the WBS defensemen really know how to fight.

Here’s Eric P’s takeaway from Day 1.

My takeaway? Looks like Domoulin and Chevrie are going to make the most immediate impact on WBS in the fall. Chevrie’s AHL numbers have been down right pedestrian: In two AHL seasons, he’s played 24 games, 6-10-1 record, 3.68 GAA and a 0.890 SV%. He’s split time in the ECHL and with the Rochester Americans and more recently the Portland Pirates.

I think PIT / WBS goes after another goaltender, and have Chevrie / Killeen battle it out in Wheeling or at backup to either hopefully Scott Munroe, The aforementioned Goalie Guild agrees even says so:

If Day 2 is anything like Day 1, expect another blog post up here Sunday. Make sure you follow all these guys I embedded in this blog post on Twitter along with Mike O’Brien who is on the ground in Pittsburgh.

Rake Leaves; Burn Leaves

I have found that summer hockey blogging is like a leaf in your yard. You don’t burn one leaf every time you see one. You rake them all into a pile and then burn them (at least in my neighborhood) Much like summer hockey blogging, every tidbit of information seen isn’t worth its own blog post.

Never fear, NHL Draft is this weekend then the following weekend is the start of NHL Free Agency. I will do my best to stay on top of how each move directly / indirectly affects WBS from both inside (players signed, traded by PIT) and outside (players signed, traded by other East Division teams)

Here are some of the leaves I’ve gathered to fire off (or burn) another blog post:

–> In collaboration with the January 20, 2013 Outdoor Game in Hershey, the Bears announced an Alumni Game to be held the day before, much like the Alumni Game the Penguins held in their tenth anniversary. The only problem I see in this game is who will play goal. In the Penguins Alumni game, Scott Stuccio and David Weninger tended the nets for the Penguins Alumni. Not surprisingly, the Penguins didn’t announce any goaltenders in their own release. I have virtually no idea who the Penguins can call in for this Outdoor Alumni Game. If you do, comments are open.

–> Meet the new Wheeling Nailers coach, same as the old Wheeling Nailers coach.

–> Calder Cup Champions Mike Angelidis and J.P. Cote are heading to Syracuse. If I am reading the articles correctly, Cote signed an AHL deal while Angelidis re-signed an NHL deal with Tampa Bay.

–> Not officially announced, so no link here but Pittsburgh is expected to make qualifying offers to Robert Bortuzzo, Alex Grant, Carl Sneep, Brian Strait and Keven Veilleux. They aren’t going to offer Alex Picard or Cal O’Reilly and forgotten souls Boris Valabik, Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Mattias Modig.

–> Here is your WBS Penguins Season in Review for April.

–> Wilkes-Barre officially announces details on the October 13 college game between Penn State and American International College on Saturday October 13. If you are a full-share season ticket holder, you get a ticket to the game included with your season tickets which is pretty cool.

–> Jacob Micflikier, who terrorized the Penguins as a member of the Hershey Bears, Charlotte Checkers and Albany River Rats, is taking his talents overseas to Switzerland. The link is in German, untranslated, you are on your own playing “Fun with Babelfish.”

So that’s all I have compiled in the last six or so days. I will have a draft recap and any news on trades or whatever probably Sunday, or if it is something major possibly sooner than that. Penguins color commentator Mike O’Brien will actually be on the ground in Pittsburgh this weekend covering the Draft. Follow him for official updates @MikeOBrienWBS or at facebook.com/mikeobrienwbs

Stay cool.

What is it we do around here again?

With all this recent non-Penguin related topics being discussed on the blog I needed a refresher on what exactly the purpose of this blog is for. Let’s check the top of the page again: “A fan blog about the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins” – Oh. That. The Penguins. Right!

Anyway, the organization finally gave me some content to blog about. Today, they announced the signing of G Tomas Vokoun to a two year contract.

In reading the tea leaves, one could confidently surmise the following:

  • Brent Johnson’s days as backup to Marc-Andre Fleury are over.
  • The organization did not feel incumbent Brad Thiessen was NHL ready enough to offer him the backup role to Fleury.
  • Pittsburgh now has one of the best, if not the best 1-2 goalie combos in the NHL with the addition of Vokoun.

Thiessen is a Group VI unrestricted free agent. Having Vokoun inked in June means that he has all but played his final days in a Penguin sweater. He could test the market and see if there is a team out there willing to give him a shot at an NHL backup deal but realistically, there are only 60 of those jobs to be won in the NHL (30 teams carry two goaltenders) is Thiessen one of the 60 best goaltenders in North America right now?

So where does this leave the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton goal crease come the fall? Good question. Scott Munroe is an unrestricted free agent. Patrick Killeen is under contract but ideally could use another year of ECHL before he’s ready for AHL full time. What do you do?

I’ve decided to bust out the poll again and let you, the reader, decide what happens:

No matter what happens, could be a very interesting off season.

Let’s Go Pens!

The Reinforcements Arrive

Announced today that Simon Despres, Brian Strait and Eric Tangradi were re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre by Pittsburgh after the parent Penguins season ended on Sunday afternoon.

Also announced at the same time were the signings of Dominik Uher and Reid McNeill by Wilkes-Barre. Uher and McNeill will join the Black Aces practice squad.

It’s anticipated that Despres, Strait and Tangradi will be dressed and available for Game 3 Wednesday in Hershey. Now the question becomes who, of the current core of players that have the Bears in an 0-2 hole, sits.

Defensemen are simple. Cody Wild and Philip Samuelsson sit for Simon Despres and Brian Strait.

Forward is a bit harder. Tangradi is a winger, so the centers are safe. You are left with Nick Petersen, Colin McDonald, Geoff Walker, Bryan Lerg, Brandon DeFazio and Paul Thompson. McDonald isn’t going to sit. No way Walker or Lerg sit either. Cases can be made for DeFazio, Thompson and Nick Petersen all to stay too.

So, it’s a good time for me to bust out the poll machine and let you, the reader, vote on who among DeFazio, Thompson or Petersen sit for Tangradi.

I am sure Jonathan Bombulie will have more later. Get to voting!

Let’s Go Pens!
