Chirps from Center Ice

A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Category Archives: Pittsburgh

Old Faces; New Places

Shuffling of some faces you are familiar with to new places. Here we go:

–> Eric Tangradi to Pittsburgh. That’s it. No one else was called up which is surprising to me, but it looks like Arron Asham, Steve MacIntyre and Dustin Jeffrey (yeah, he still plays for Pittsburgh) could play tomorrow.

–> In the wake of the Tangradi recall, Cody Chupp was recalled to Wilkes-Barre from Wheeling and Brian Day (yeah, he is still in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton) was assigned to Wheeling. Probably a conditioning thing for him, having just come back from an injury which has sidelined him all season.

–> Ex-WBS bench boss Todd Richards is back behind the bench again, this time with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

This next link doesn’t apply at all to the above, but the ever popular Pensblog had a great “point / counterpoint” regarding the status of Sidney Crosby. By far the most popular Penguin blog from a fan perspective, I am thrilled the brain trust over there is making light of the total lack of news regarding it’s star player.

Gameday for tomorrow’s matchup at Norfolk will be up here on the blog at 3 p.m.

Don’t Get On That Bus!

Pittsburgh was very direct today (for once) regarding the health of two star players. Center Jordan Staal and Forward James Neal are out for a while with injuries.

But wait! There’s more! Craig Adams left practice today with an apparent knee injury.

No doubt, call-ups from Wilkes-Barre are coming. Most likely in the form of Eric Tangradi for Neal and either Jason Williams or Ryan Craig for Staal. Who ever loses out on the replacement for Staal could very well be the replacement for Adams between Williams and Craig, if a third call-up is needed.

Wilkes-Barre leaves for Norfolk tomorrow. There may be a few extra seats available on that bus.

In the opening sentence of the grim report by the Pens, they used the “When it rains, it pours” line.

Someone send a truck full of umbrellas to Pittsburgh, immediately!

Blog in Case You Forget…

Debated for the past couple of hours whether to blog or not. Figured I would for the fact that if I sit on this information / speculation, I may forget it when I actually want to blog. Here goes…

Paul Martin and Richard Park practiced today. Martin is quoted that he wants to be well enough to play Friday. Does this mean Despres is down for good? (Or until there is another injury to a defenseman? These days it’s not a matter of if, but when)

On top of that, Robert Bortuzzo and Dustin Jeffrey skated in full gear and may practice this week. Maybe Jeffrey comes back down for more conditioning soon?

Here in Wilkes-Barre, there was no re-assignment of Peter Merth to Wheeling. Bombulie didn’t update today so I’m thinking the Pens didn’t practice.

Finally, on the subject of replay in the AHL, it was tweeted today by Sound Tigers beat writer Michael Fornabaio and Darryl Hunt who covers the Worcester Sharks (the Sharks visited the Sound Tigers today) that the AHL is experimenting with video replay on goals only. Here’s the blurb on it from Mike’s blog today:

Equipment has been floating around here for a while, but today the AHL confirmed it’s testing a potential video replay system here. There are cameras above both goals providing an angle to allow the referee(s) to take a look and see if a puck went into the net. “All very preliminary,” Jason Chaimovitch wrote. They plan to have it available during all four Bridgeport home games this month. The AHL Board of Governors has talked about replay possibilities over the past few years without approving a system. This potential system was developed by NeuLion, and Charles Wang was in the house.

NeuLion also runs AHL Live. Charles Wang runs the New York Islanders and owns NeuLion. Insert technical difficulties joke here….

Despres Re-Assigned 1/1

News of the day was that Simon Despres was re-assigned from Pittsburgh today.

Probably a cap related move, as Pittsburgh doesn’t play again until Friday while Wilkes-Barre has a home game on Wednesday vs. Norfolk. Or, Paul Martin could be healthy enough for Friday and the re-assignment is more permanent, for now.

I’m speculating, but there could be more recalls from Pittsburgh, as Arron Asham and Pascal Dupuis left yesterdays game vs. New Jersey with injury.

I think it is safe to say that there won’t be any recalls until after the Admirals game on Wednesday.

Picard / Williams Back; Simon Stays?*

Alex Picard and Jason Williams were reassigned today by Pittsburgh. With Deryk Engelland back from his suspension and Wilkes-Barre in dire need of a defenseman, the Picard reassignment was to be expected.

Bombulie had the Friday practice update. Carl Sneep, Boris Valabik and Joey Mormina will be unavailable for tomorrow’s game against Bridgeport, all due to injury.

Jonathan also mentioned Simon Despres who is still up with Pittsburgh and speculated as to whether or not it is for good. My blog friends at Faceoff Factor had an interesting read which supplements the Bombulie discussion.

My take? I think Simon is an NHL player. Selfishly, I want him back here. But that said, he is an NHL player in my mind.

Here’s a great read from the guys from PA Puck on Wheelchair Hockey. When you get up to walk away from your computer later, count your blessings.

Bridgeport in town tomorrow for a 5:05 start but not before they take on Norfolk again in Hampton Roads this evening. I’ll be keeping an eye on this on AHL Live and will probably have a retweet of a final score later on. Hershey is idle, so any points the Admirals get tonight would put them in sole possession of second place in the Division.

For a non-divisional game, I am actually really looking forward to it. You see, the inspiration for me to get into blogging, Michael Fornabaio, will be there tomorrow. He’s covered the Sound Tigers beat like a snuggie since their inception and even covered the now defunct Beast of New Haven before that. It’s going to be fun getting a chance to meet him finally.

Gameday will be up here Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

These Three Things…

Three-pack of information on a Thursday:

–> Deryk Engelland was suspended three games. Here’s the video explaining the reasoning.

–> So a recall from Wilkes-Barre will be made. Who? Looks like it may be Brian Strait:

https://twitter.com/EricP55/status/149968368978501633

–> Hershey beat Syracuse last night 5-3. The Bears hit the Christmas break atop the East Division standings with 39 points and sit second in the conference overall.

I’m really dragging out the blog updates. I may or may not have anything else AHL wise until after Christmas. Who knows. Keep checking back.

Let’s Go Pens!

Here, Boy! Here!

Pittsburgh announced today that Eric Tangradi was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton.

Color me shocked for a few reasons: 1) Roster freeze in effect, I didn’t think teams were allowed to send guys down. 2) Surely Tangradi would have gotten a better look than what he did in his current recall, which wasn’t much. I get having to earn the right and all to play in the National Hockey League, but it doesn’t seem like he’s even being given the chance to step on the ice. Last night’s game vs. Chicago he was a scratch.

Seth Rorabaugh or @emptynetters on Twitter tweeted this afternoon:

I saw some responses to his tweet on this and the feeling I have had all along regarding Tangradi is slowly growing on others and that limb I have been on has some added weight on it. What’s the feeling?

Trade bait.

I hope I am wrong.

Elsewhere, look for me on Twitter later later with a recap of the Bears / Crunch tilt from Hershey tonight at 7.* If the Bears win, they have outright number one in the division going into the Christmas break.

Let’s Go Pens!

* – actually probably a Scott Stuccio, Tim Leone or Hershey Bears retweet on the final score. May do all three, may do one, may do none. Depends on conciseness / creativity.
