Power Rankings – The Utica W(x13)agon

Typing out thirteen ‘W’s’ in a row in the headline seemed like overkill here, given it is Thanksgiving week and the Utica Comets still have yet to be dealt a setback of any type whatsoever in their contests. A remarkable feat and a record broken. The Utica Comets remain the undisputed number one team in the AHL Power Rankings this week.

Stockton remains number two after also not losing in regulation, but there are two overtime losses mixed in there. Not too much shakeup in the top five this week.

Here’s the whole list, in all it’s glory:

RankTeamBlurbLast Week
113-0 and still haven’t lost. At this point, it’s checking the schedule to see when the Comets may be in trouble. I don’t see it this week. Maybe next week.n/c
2Asserted dominance over Ontario Sunday in their only match of the week Sunday. Rematch later today.n/c
3So there is an epic clash this weekend between the red hot Springfield Thunderbirds, who swept the weekend, against the Hartford Wolf Pack who are equally as hot.+1
4Wolf Pack haven’t lost in five straight and have a shot to overtake Springfield at the top of the Atlantic in home and home action this coming weekend. +1
5Got beat at home over a very good Stockton team on Sunday. A chance at payback later today. +1
6Split a pair with Tucson. Lead the Central by the slimmest of margins.+8
7Up to second in the North now after a perfect week with a sweep of the Crunch and a Sunday OT win over the Marlies. +12
8Have needed extra time in their last four games. Are up to third in the division.-1
9Is it a good week for the Amerks when they lose twice to the buzzsaw Comets and need a shootout to beat the hapless Phantoms?-6
10All three contests went to overtime for the Griffins this week. Points are good this time of year. +5
11There’s no consistency with this team, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing considering everyone and their mother makes playoffs. Busy Thanksgiving week for the Bruins, playing in three contests. +1
12There’s no consistency with this team either. 5-5 in their last ten.-4
13It’s amazing what a little help from Pittsburgh will do for a team. This standard also applies to just about any AHL squad.+9
14Split a pair of close contests in Colorado. Host Iowa this weekend.-5
15Beat up on a hapless Milwaukee side this week. Home stand continues with Texas this week.+3
16If the IceHogs play the way they did when they took on the Wolves for a home and home, Rockford is not near the Central basement for much longer.+11
17Time to pump the brakes on the Wolves? Maybe. Chicago finds ways to get points and are still in the mix in the North, but they aren’t going to run away with the lead in this competitive division. -7
18Exposed a bit in Hartford Saturday, up 3-2 and lost 7-3. May not even be the the third or fourth best team in the division.-7
19Senators were good in their only action this past week against Laval. Very winnable games coming up here where the Senators can start making a move out of the North Division basement.+5
20Pair up in Winnipeg against the Moose next weekend. Split OT wins with the Griffins last weekend.+3
21Leaving the Canucks where they were last week because they didn’t play this week due to flooding in and around the Fraser Valley. Smart call. All the best to the City of Abbotsford.n/c
22Had their trip to Abbotsford postponed due to flooding there. Lost to San Jose last Wednesday. Contests with the Reign and Gulls this week.-9
23Split home contests with Henderson. Stockton drops by this week.+2
24Beat the Marlies in a shootout midweek then dropped the first of what’s going to be three with the Senators.-4
25Swept the Barracuda up in San Jose this past weekend. Now, San Jose returns the favor this weekend for a pair in San Diego.+5
26Well, they didn’t give up seven this week at any point but they did beat Bakersfield midweek and were swept by the Gulls.-9
27Split in Iowa. Are out of the Pacific basement. Host Abbotsford this weekend.+1
28Haven’t won in five contests. The Crunch are becoming a footnote in the North Division. -12
29Winless in their last five and no, I still don’t see a winnable game on the schedule for the Phantoms this week. n/c
30Islanders can’t get out of the block the right way in most games and it sticks with them. Winless in their last five.-4
31Salvaged a win in Manitoba Sunday. Are the only team in the AHL in single digits on points. n/c

Power Rankings – The Utica Wagon

With a 10-0 start to the season, the Utica Comets remain the #1 team in the Power Rankings for the third week in a row.

Hartford replaces Ontario in the top five but the Reign didn’t drop far.

Here’s the whole list, in all their glory…

RankTeamBlurbLast Week
1One win away from tying the best start by an AHL team to start the season. The last team to do it is the team the Comets play this week, the Rochester Americans.n/c
2So I like to watch this team play, and I can tell you that they grind you down. They played a competitive series against Henderson this past weekend at home. Big game this Sunday in Ontario.+1
3I mean the only thing you can go right now if you are any team in the North Division not named Utica is be the best team not named Utica, and that’s Rochester right now.+2
4This team keeps rolling, despite a setback at home against Hartford this past Friday. Penguins, then a home and home against Bridgeport coming up this week.n/c
5Color us shocked that the Wolf Pack are still contending here in mid-November, coming off statement wins over Springfield and Hartford.+5
6Reign will be well rested for their Sunday clash at home against an equally rested Stockton team after splitting a pair in Tucson last week.-4
7Roughed up the Wolves this weekend in Chicago and there aren’t many teams that can do that. Keep an eye on the Marlies.+7
8Took 4 of 6 out of Pennsylvania this past weekend. The big matchup is this Friday in Utica.+4
9Played competitive hockey with Stockton this week. Winnable games in Colorado this weekend.+2
10Gave up out of conference points and may have been exposed a bit. Rest of the division has caught up, for now.-4
11I’m going to call this a stumble for the Bears. Just a shootout win over Syracuse to show for the week.-4
12Last week stock up, this week is stock down for the Bruins who get Hartford again this Friday.-3
13Swept a home and home with San Diego, up to third in the division. Busy week with San Jose and Abbotsford coming.+9
14The stock up and stock down with Providence we talked about above applies here to Iowa. Either that or Milwaukee isn’t a very good team.+5
15Will face a snarly Wolves team in kids day game Wednesday then it’s off to Texas.-7
16Crunch will be looking to get back on track this week in Cleveland.-3
17Barracuda stay competitive but gave up seven again this week, this time to Abbotsford.n/c
18Three with the lowly Admirals this week at home. Iowa and Chicago look to be sputtering, this is Manitoba’s chance.-2
19Split with Rochester. Better than the week prior. Host Syracuse for a pair this week.+6
20Nice battles this week with the Islanders and Comets. Big test this week against Toronto.+9
213 out of 4 points this weekend against San Jose to right the ship. Condors are coming in next.+9
22When this team scores a power play goal (currently 0 for their last 36) come get me. Otherwise, this is a below average team in an average division.-4
23Good chance to make up some ground this week with a pair against the Griffins.+1
24No one can fault the Senators for losing to the Comets, but everything else (loss to Laval, win against Bridgeport) is up in the air.-3
25Split a pair in Texas. They are looking like they are turning a corner. Big test with the Silver Knights coming up.-2
26A win in Syracuse and one point in their Canadian trip was all the Islanders took from the week. Better week than Hershey, Wilkes-Barre and Providence, but the Islanders sit behind these teams at present.-6
27Played one game and lost. Get the Wolves this week for a home and home.-12
28Good response by the Roadrunners who dropped eight goals on Ontario on Friday. Honorary Pacific Division member Iowa drops by this weekend.+3
29I don’t see any winnable games for this teams this weekend.-3
30Travel up to San Jose this week for a pair with the Barracuda. Dropped a pair against Bakersfield this past weekend.-2
31This team stinks and the schedule isn’t going to relent.-4

Power Rankings – U-ti-ca! (x2)

Comets stay undefeated, talk a little smack in the process and remain the number one team in the Power Rankings this week.

One team, the Chicago Wolves, drop out of the top five this week. They didn’t go far, they are sixth, and the Rochester Americans jump into the top five.

The three teams which have yet to lose in regulation round out the top three.

Here’s all 31, in order…

RankTeamBlurbLast Week
1 7-0 and still at the top of the rankings here. Utica has done everything right and then some. Tops in power play AND penalty kill, this team is tough to beat.n/c
2Still haven’t lost in regulation. We think that continues this weekend in Tucson.n/c
3Heat still haven’t lost in regulation and play a gritty, grinding style of hockey as evidenced by their two close wins against Abbotsford at home this past weekend.+2
4Dealt first regulation loss of the season Sunday in Hershey but that shouldn’t slow this Springfield team down. Tough tests this weekend with Providence and Hartford coming up.
-1
5Amerks look like a good team in an average division. Midweek trip to Wilkes-Barre then they host Cleveland for a pair this weekend.+6
6Split the weekend with a loss against the Moose and a win against the Admirals. Wolves face a Toronto Marlies side they haven’t played in years this weekend in Rosemont.-2
7It was an OK weekend for the Bears who took 3 of 6 points out of the weekend. Bears are in the mix in mid-November, where you would expect them to be.
+1
8Buy stock in Grand Rapids. We think. Talk to us next week after the Moose come in for a pair.+11
9There are teams that have been punching under their weight and Providence is one of them. Impressive week for the P-Bruins taking down Wilkes-Barre and shutting out Hershey this weekend.
+16
104 of 6 points out of the weekend 3-in-3 for the Wolf Pack which is not bad at all. Hartford is second in a competitive Atlantic Division.
n/c
11Swept what is looking like a fumbling Roadrunners team. Big, big test coming this weekend in Stockton.+12
12Split a pair with the Phantoms this weekend at home. Checkers are going to see a lot of the Penguins in November.+6
13The ol’ Wednesday-Thursday-Saturday for the Crunch this week with visits from the Islanders and Bears bookending a trip to Utica Thursday.+1
14Split the weekend with a win in Rochester and a loss by first place Utica. Marlies head west to Chicago for a weekend set with the Wolves in an intra-conference matchup.+7
15IceHogs one of the last AHL teams to have a home opener and they pick up a big win Sunday against the Manitoba Moose. Iowa and Chicago are in this week at the BMO.+11
16Not a good weekend for the Moose but Manitoba is still OK standings wise. Six game road trip continues in Milwaukee and Grand Rapids.-4
17Scored seven and gave up seven against Texas this weekend with a patchwork team due to COVID running rampant inside the Sharks organization. -4
18Hafta figure out the power play. 0-for-20 funk. Dropped all three games as a result.-12
19Said last week that the Wild may be the only team to run with the Wolves, may have to re-work that statement after a close overtime loss to Grand Rapids and then the pasting Milwaukee laid on Saturday. Oh, well.-10
20Canadian road trip for the Islanders coming up with Laval and Belleville on the docket. Bridgeport salvages the weekend with a win against in state rival Hartford on Sunday.n/c
21More weekends like this past, close game in Rochester then sweeping the Monsters in Cleveland, and the Senators won’t be in last place in the North Division for much longer.+7
22Condors will be looking to get back in the win column after a pair of setbacks to San Diego and Ontario.-7
23Eagles stayed busy last week and played in four games and won three of them. Would have been epic if they toppled the Reign Sunday.+7
24Scored seven and gave up seven in San Jose this weekend.-8
25Swept at home by last place Belleville, will be looking to get on track this weekend in Rochester. -18
26Split a pair in Charlotte this past weekend after picking up their first win at home last Wednesday against the Penguins. Does Head Coach Ian Laperriere’s seat stay warm?+5
27Perfect weekend bid spoiled in Chicago on Sunday. Milwaukee is 3-5 but there is a lot of time left.+2
28Split a pair of 3-2 decisions this weekend at home against Bakersfield and Colorado. More Bakersfield, please! Twice more this weekend. -1
29Canadians are trash, and some of that seeps to the farm in Laval. Rocket set up shop in Central New York and were shutout in Syracuse and another notch in Utica’s belt.-7
30Played Stockton tight on the road this weekend and will host San Jose this weekend. No wins in their last four games. -6
31Things aren’t getting any easier for Tuscon who will host the high flying Reign this weekend.-14

Power Rankings – U-ti-ca!

You can only ignore an undefeated team for so long. So with the month of November here, we put the teams who either haven’t lost at all yet or haven’t lost in regulation yet at the top of this weeks version of the AHL Power Rankings.

The Utica Comets haven’t lost. At all. Not in overtime, not in a shootout. They haven’t lost. Sure, they have only played a league low four games, but they haven’t lost yet and this is my blog so they get number one.

I think the top five is pretty stout. You may not see much movement off of these five for a while, maybe. I guess we will see next week?

Anyway, here’s all 31 teams.

RankTeamBlurbLast Week
1Devils get top billing this week. They haven’t lost in any game yet, they HAVE to be number one this week.+2
2Reign still haven’t lost in regulation, points in every game. Schedule gets busy this week.n/c
3Thunderbirds continue to roll. Still haven’t lost in regulation. Look like an above average team right now playing in an average division. -2
4There are teams that you expected to compete and Chicago is one of them, the Wolves are exceeding expectations this far, pasting Grand Rapids twice this week.+7
5Heat haven’t lost in regulation either. Had a game with San Jose get postponed Sunday because the Barracuda didn’t have enough players. +5
6AHL’s luckiest team? It just many be. Took 5 of 6 points last week.+1
7Monsters playing where they should, at the top of the division. Only three Monsters games have been decided in regulation and the Monsters have points in every game they have played except for their first game of the season. +9
8Play a competitive series against Cleveland this weekend. Springfield and Wilkes-Barre will get all the plaudits this far with their performances, but don’t forget about 11-time.-4
9Split with Manitoba up in Winnipeg this past weekend. Looking like the only team early on who can run with Chicago.-3
104 of 6 points from last week. Two more with Bridgeport this week who they beat pretty handily last week. -2
11Swept Laval this week. Nothing flashy with this team, but they will play run and gun with you.+6
12Staying ahead of the North with a split with the Wild at home. Moose play on the road till the third week of November.-3
13Fewest games played so far than any other team in the Pacific. Barracuda are dealing with a COVID deal. What, you didn’t think we were done with that, did you?n/c
14Sweep three this week using overtime or better to get there. Host an undefeated Utica Friday in what’s going to be a banger. Should be higher in these Rankings.-2
15Pair of wins to start, then a pair of losses, so of course the pattern continues with a split this past weekend with Henderson.n/c
16split with Rockford. Pacific trip for the next two weeks for the Stars. Have to maximize those points, especially against a struggling Colorado side this weekend. +4
17Offense is sputtering but the defense is OK. .500 team as we head into November. +4
18Let it slip away Sunday in Springfield. Head home to host a still winless Lehigh Valley this weekend. -13
19Beat a bad Milwaukee side then got pasted by an elite Wolves team. The games sometimes are what we think they are.+7
20Toiling around mid-pack in the Atlantic. -1
21Middle of the North. Swept Belleville by identical 5-2 scores this weekend. Schedule gets tough with Rochester and Utica this week.+1
22They aren’t just going to hand you things. Rocket drop two to the Amerks at home this weekend. Things don’t get any easier with Utica and Syracuse this week. +2
23Split a pair in Bakersfield this weekend. There are two teams in this division who have yet to lose so the Silver Knights are just fine. -5
24Canucks have seen enough of Ontario, whom they have played four times already. A trip to Stockton this weekend. -10
25It’s surprising how low the Bruins are in the standings. If it wasn’t for Lehigh Valley’s struggles, the Bruins would be the talk of the Atlantic on how out of place they look at the bottom of the division.n/c
26Gritted out a split in Texas. Five game homestead starts this Saturday against Grand Rapids.+2
27Picked up their first win this past week in Tucson. Could possibly get their second this Saturday against a bad Colorado team. Penalty kill is dead last in the AHL. +4
28Last place in the North – a 2-5 start isn’t great, but there is time, lots of it, to turn it around in Belleville. -1
29Yikes. Four straight losses. Busy month gets ripping quick against a good Manitoba team, a better Iowa side and an great Chicago club this weekend. -6
30At this pace, Colorado will let in 100 goals by Thanksgiving. Already have 34 in on them. -1
31This team stinks.-1

Power Rankings – Thunderbirds Soar!

Back for Week 2 with some movement this week in the second version of these Power Rankings. There is some Atlantic Division bias here with five teams in the top ten. Sorry!

This week belongs to the Thunderbirds, who are off to a hot start. I think we knew that Ontario was going to be good and they are number two, but Utica at number three? That’s an early surprise.

Here are the rest for you in order.

RankTeamBlurbLast Week
1I mean we have seen this before with previous iterations with Springfield, but this is a good start. Wilkes-Barre and Charlotte in for some early tests.+4
24-0 start with one shootout loss to start the year, top of the Pacific. Trip to Abbotsford this weekend.+8
3Surprising start. Surprising in that if you watched this team in Binghamton last year, you never saw this. Leagues stingiest team (4 goals allowed)+5
4Bit of a drop, but not far for the Bears out of the top spot. Home cooking this week with Syracuse and Cleveland.-3
53 of 4 points from Hershey isn’t bad by any stretch.+6
6Tidy sweep of Rockford at home has the Wild at the top of the Central.+13
7Worked overtime to beat Hartford and Lehigh Valley this weekend. Will face rested Hartford and Springfield this weekend after another match midweek with the Phantoms.+5
8Good start for the Wolf Pack, racking up early points.+1
9Swept Grand Rapids at home. Hosts Iowa this weekend.+7
10Heat have the momentum on their side and are amongst the stingiest teams in the Pacific with big wins over San Diego and Bakersfield.+6
11Sweep the Admirals in a home and home and the Carolina affiliation looks better than it did last week.+17
12So that offense we talked about last week with the Crunch dried up a bit and only got the Crunch four goals against some surprising teams in Utica and Rochester.-10
13The other stingiest team in the Pacific is the Barracuda, who are winning games with defense early on. Trip to Stockton Sunday makes for an interesting matchup.+13
14Abbotsford hosted and swept Henderson in hockey’s return to the Fraser Valley this past weekend. Hosts the top team in the division Ontario this weekend.+9
15the ebbs and flows of a season. Pair of wins to start the season, pair of losses now. How will the Condors respond against Colorado and Henderson this week?-12
165 out of 6 points from the weekend is a great start to the young season. Tough road trip this week out to Syracuse then down to Hershey.+14
17Huge wins by big margins over some old rivals in Toronto and Syracuse have the Americans in third in the North.+8
18The fun and gun they displayed at home against Colorado last week was shut down in Abbotsford this weekend, including getting shutout.-14
19Stayed busy last weekend with a good old 3-in-3. Shutout a tired Laval team Sunday.+5
20Split a weekend pair with Tucson. Splits seem to be the norm with the Stars early on here.+1
21Split a pair with the Stars and are .500. Last place San Diego is in this weekend.-3
22.500 start for the Marlies, which is right where the may play all season.-2
23Swept by the Wolves this weekend. One more with Chicago then a stop in Grand Rapids.-17
24Rocket get some home cooking this week in the likes of Toronto and Rochester. Should be an interesting early matchup with the Americans.-11
25Not the best start for the P-Bruins at 1-2-1-1, one point out of a three game weekend with Charlotte and Bridgeport in next.-18
26Tight contests in Winnipeg this past weekend with the Griffins coming out on the losing end. Wins will come, eventually.-11
27Cleveland held this team to just one goal in two games. Such as life in this league and the schedule doesn’t get much easier this week.-13
28IceHogs have given up the most goals in the AHL so far.-6
29Rough start of the season for the Eagles who are in search of their first win.n/a
30Leagues best offense on paper has least amount of goals scored in the league. Oof.+1
31The only team yet to register a point. Maybe it comes this weekend in Tucson.-4

Power Rankings – Week of the Bear

To start, I want to let you know that I want to simplify things with these Rankings. They were a bear to put together each week, and a bear to maintain. I don’t like to dabble in HTML but I had to in order to make things simple every week. Not anymore. If you want to know who the Chicago Wolves, or any team, play this week or how the Stockton Heat, or any team, did last weekend, you can go here and here. If you are wondering what the record of the Laval Rocket is or, for that matter, any team, navigate here. These parts in large parts were what made the whole concept so difficult because you had to maintain 31 teams capsules of scores, records and schedules each week for each team. Again, it’s a massive project that takes away a lot of my day / week. I do this as a hobby and debated just scrapping these altogether, but decided to bring them back. It was either this or the silly stat charts, but really, who wants to look at percentages and do math? Not me anymore!

What I don’t know is where or when or really how often I will run these. Let’s go with Tuesday’s, for now, and consider it a weekly feature again.

Rank, team, blurb and where they were last week is what I am giving you. I want to keep it as simple as I can make it this year. Not only for myself but for the reader.

Anyway here they are. Theme this week is Jekyll and Hyde. Every division has one and some have two. Here they are, in all their glory.

RankTeam BlurbLast Week
1As good as we thought they would be; 2-0 and at the top of the Atlantic Division.
2Good lord that offense is potent. Down multiple goals in both games against Cleveland, Crunch storm back and win both games.
3Beat San Jose Sunday 1-0 with just 15 shots to the Barracudas 34. Reigning Pacific Division Champs are in familiar territory, at the top of the division at 2-0.
4Played fun and gun against Colorado in a pair of home contests and swept the Eagles.
5Good start for the new affiliation with St. Louis, 2-0.
6Pasted Grand Rapids in their only game of the weekend. They should all come this easy!
7Ultra competitive division and every point is going to matter. 3 out of a possible 4 points isn’t bad, but Hershey was perfect, just saying.
8It’s one game (and it was against Rochester) but a good start for the new Devils affiliate.
9Hartford outgunned opponents this weekend. Hardly sustainable, but a 2-1 start nevertheless.
103 of 4 points to start the season isn’t bad at all.
11Two more cracks against the Bears at home this weekend. Could be an early season indicator on how good the Checkers will be.
12Jekyll and Hyde performances for the Pens this past weekend against Lehigh Valley and Charlotte.
13Split a pair with Belleville in similar fashion. Good test with Providence coming Saturday.
14See Laval. They get Cleveland at home for a pair.
15Blow out win (Rockford) and a blow out loss (Milwaukee) Jekyll and Hyde? Jekyll and Hyde!
16See Grand Rapids, but substitute Toronto as the opponent.
17Split a pair at home against Tucson in front of about 2000 fans combined for both contests, and you thought your teams attendance was bad.
18This is why a power rankings at the beginning of the season is a fools errand. Roadrunners are .500 after a pair of games against Stockton. It may take a while to figure these .500 teams out.
19Bunch of teams are 1-1 in the Central, Wild are one of them.
20Jekyll and Hyde performances against Manitoba (5-1 win, 5-0 loss) – Rochester up next then Cleveland.
21Split with the Wild in close contests. Rockford next.
22One of many .500 teams in the Central.
23First win in franchise history as the top affiliate of Vancouver in shootout fashion against Ontario Sunday. Home opener against Henderson this weekend.
24Two shootout losses already. Already? Already.
25It’s one game, against Utica, but you lost to Utica!
2634 shots Sunday in Bakersfield Sunday and no goals. Held the Condors to 15 and still lost.
27You can’t take much from just one game. Gulls won’t be in last place in the Pacific for long.
28Not a good start with the new Carolina affiliation, but it is just one game.
29Gave up 11 goals in Nevada this weekend, more than any other team.
30Yeah you aren’t going to compete in this division, or any division really, when you throw away multiple goal leads.
31Potent offense on paper scored just two goals on ice. That’s why you don’t play games on paper.

Comments are there for you if you want them. I’ll be back next week, maybe, with week two.

AHL Power Rankings: Early March 2020

Some changes and shake ups in the top five this week with a pair of Atlantic Division teams set to battle for the top of the division but it’s Belleville who holds on to their top spot in this weeks version of the Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings.

Binghamton makes a jump into the top five this week and Iowa hangs around also. Pop past the Wild if you didn’t link in direct to see where your favorite team ended up this week.
