Eastern Conference Final Game 2: St. John’s IceCaps (WBS leads 1-0)

Eastern Conference Final Game 2 — St. John’s IceCaps

AHL Game: M2

Who: St. John’s IceCaps

Where: Mile One Centre

When: 6:00 p.m.*

Series: WBS leads 1-0 (best of seven)

Media Kit

Last Game: Last night in St. John’s, the Penguins got goals from Chuck Kobasew, Conor Sheary and Tom Kostopoulos, 31 saves from Peter Mannino, and a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill as they took Game 1 from the IceCaps 3-2. Andrew Gordon scored twice for the IceCaps in the loss.

What to Watch For: IceCap Improvement. Hey, St. John’s is a hell of a team. They don’t want to go down 0-2 to the Penguins as the series shifts back to Northeastern PA Wednesday. Expect the IceCaps to be better. For the Penguins, they can work on a few things to improve on and have just as good a chance as the IceCaps to bring the series back home 2-0 rather than split 1-1.

How the IceCaps got here: They defeated the Albany Devils in four games in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and defeated the Norfolk Admirals in six games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

How the Penguins got here: They defeated the Binghamton Senators in four games in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and defeated the Providence Bruins in seven games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

What to Watch For: IceCaps rink rust, having not played in a week vs. the Penguins more active legs coming off of two games this week including a Game 7 Wednesday. Does IceCaps veteran leader Jason Jaffray play? His status was day-to-day. These two teams played four times in the regular season but since both lineups have gone through some changes.

Last Game: Saturday in Providence, the Penguins got a third period goal by Anton Zlobin to put the Bruins on the brink of elimination and won 3-2.

What to Watch For: Finish. Penguins do not want to get this to a Game 7 as anything can happen in a Game 7. The Pens need to have their best game of the series if they want to close out Providence tonight.

Last Game: Last night in Providence, the Pens lost 3-2 in overtime. The Bruins score with .6 seconds left in regulation and then scored again in overtime to tie the series at two games a piece.

What to Watch For: Buttoning up. The Penguins were exposed last night in a few areas and it cost them. They need to play a full 60 minutes tonight to bring this series back to Wilkes-Barre up 3-2.

Last Game: Wednesday in Providence, the Pens came back from a 4-1 deficit to force double overtime, and Simon Despres secured the game winning goal. Rookie Conor Sheary had a goal and two assists.

What to Watch For: Killer Instinct. The Pens would love to ideally close this series out this weekend and not need a Game 6 Monday in Wilkes-Barre. In order to do that, they need to play like they played in the third period Wednesday.

Last Game: Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre, Anton Zlobin had two goals in his return from injury as the Penguins steamrolled the Bruins 6-1.

What to Watch For: Discipline. Things got testy in the third period Saturday with the game well decided in favor of the Penguins. The more disciplined team tonight probably walks away winners tonight.
