Wheeling Wrap 3/7

It’s noon Tuesday and time to look back at the web that was for the Wheeling Nailers.

It was a rough week for the Nailers, who continue to slip away from the third place Adirondack Thunder, six points behind the third place Thunder.

Friday, the Nailers were in Indy and took on the Fuel and won 3-2 in overtime. Nailers fell behind 2-1 before getting a third period goal from Tyler Currier to even it up at two, before Cody Wydo scored in overtime to give the Nailers the win. Doug Carr stopped 21 of 23 in net.

Saturday, the Nailers traveled to Fort Wayne for the first of two with the Komets. They lost a close one 4-3 to Fort Wayne. The Nailers blew a 3-1 lead in the third period as the Komets stormed back to scored three even strength goals and take the win. Doug Carr took the loss with 33 saves on 37 shots. Wheeling scored two power play goals.

Sunday in the rematch, the Fort Wayne Komets swept the weekend with a 2-1 win. Gage Quinney opened the scoring for the Nailers but Wheeling was not able to hold on as the Komets scored two to take the win. Sean Maguire stopped 41 of 43.

The week, the Nailers host the Quad City Mallards for a pair of games Friday and Saturday before taking on the Toledo Walleye Sunday. The Walleye have already locked up a playoff spot.

Wheeling sits fourth in the North Division with a record of 28-23-6-0, good for 62 points.

Wheeling Wrap 2/28

It’s noon Tuesday and time to look back at the week that was for the ECHL affiliate in Wheeling.

The Nailers started the week with two games in Toledo, Ohio and only took one point with them out of the Central Division leaders.

On Friday, nothing went right for the Nailers and they were obliterated by the Walleye 7-0. Let’s just move on from this one.

On Saturday it was a closer affair with Toledo and won that ended in overtime for the Walleye by a score of 4-3. Fast forward to the end of the game, the Nailers had a goal in overtime called back on account of goaltender interference. As fate would have it, the next play would see the Walleye beat Doug Carr, who would end the night with 24 saves on 28 shots. Both Cody Wydo and Adam Krause had a goal and an assist in the contest.

Sunday, the Nailers headed to Fort Wayne, Indiana and took on the Komets and lost 4-3. Sean Maguire went back in the net after getting throttled Friday by Toledo. He stopped just 16 of 2o0 and was pulled late into the second for Doug Carr, who stopped all 10 shots but the Nailers were unable to overcome the deficit and were not able to score after the change. Johnny Daniels, Garrett Meurs and Cody Wydo all scored for the Nailers in the loss. Meurs added an assist. Danny Fick chipped in two assists also in the losing effort.

Wheeling remains fifth in the six team North Division with a record of 27-21-6-0, good for 60 points.

The Nailers remain on the road this week and take on the Indy Fuel this Friday before returning back to Fort Wayne for a pair against the Komets Saturday and Sunday.

Wheeling Wrap 2/21

It’s Tuesday and time to look back at the week that was for the Wheeling Nailers.

The Nailers split a pair of 6-3 games with the Brampton Beast to start the week, beat the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday and then lost to the Beast again Monday on Presidents’ Day.

Last Wednesday, the Nailers hosted the Brampton Beast and beat them 6-3. The Nailers chased Brampton starting goaltender Zachary Fucale after putting 8 shots on him which he only stopped 5 of. Wheeling only put up 24 shots on the Beast this night, but the real story was the play in net by Nailers goaltender Sean Maguire. Maguire stopped 40 of 43 shots by the Beast. Oh, and on the offensive side, Cody Wydo had a hat trick, Christan Hilbrich had three assists and Michael Webster potted two.

In the rematch Friday, the Beast would win 6-3. Brampton this time would get the better of Sean Maguire. David Pacan got two past Maguire and chipped in with an assist. Jordan Kwas scored twice for the Nailers and Garrett Meurs scored once and had a pair of assists.

Saturday, the Nailers played host to the Kalamazoo Wings and beat the Wings 5-4. Each team had 40+ shots on net. Ex-Penguin Tyler Biggs scored for Kalamazoo. Garrett Meurs and Nick Sorkin both had a goal and added two assists. Jordan Kwas had three assists. Wheeling struck three times on the power play.Doug Carr picked up the win for the Nailers, stopping 36.

On a Monday Presidents’ Day matinee in Canada, the Nailers lost to the Brampton Beast in their third meeting with the Beast in the week by a score of 3-2. Zachary Fucale had a much better showing in net for the Beast, picking up first star honors by stopping 26 of 28 shots. Kevin Schulze chipped in with two assists on Nick Sorkin and Cody Wydo’s goals.

The Nailers still remain in fifth place in the North Division with a record of 27-19-5-0 good for 59 points. Wheeling trails fourth place Adirondack by 5 points. Everyone in the North has 51 games played except for division leader Manchester who has 52.

Wheeling heads into the week with three games this weekend. They head into Toledo for a pair of games with the Walleye before wrapping up the weekend with a Sunday matchup in Fort Wayne.

Depth Charges

With Pittsburgh losing two defensemen Thursday night’s thrilling overtime victory against Winnipeg, the Pittsburgh Penguins recalled Cameron Gaunce and Steve Oleksy from Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Friday morning.

It was announced that Olli Maatta is shelved for at least six weeks due to surgery on his left hand. I rag on the NHL and their archaic non-stance on actual injury updates, so much respect to Pittsburgh for actually disclosing what the injury was, what it took to fix it and a time table for recovery.

No such luck for Justin Schultz, who was hit along the boards by Dustin Byfuglien. Still don’t know if it’s upper or lower body or what the timetable is.

With Pittsburgh playing again tonight against Columbus, Sunday against Detroit, Tuesday against Carolina, Pittsburgh took two players from Wilkes-Barre.

Out of available players, Gaunce and Oleksy are probably the easiest for Pittsburgh to recall and Wilkes-Barre afford to lose. Derrick Pouliot, David Warsofsky, Tim Erixon and Stuart Percy remain in the AHL. Warsofsky is too valuable to recall, then possibly lose to waivers like he was last year. In the Gaunce / Oleksy recall, you are recalling one player to play with Chad Ruhwedel already in Pittsburgh and one player to sit. It’s probably Oleksy again.

If you haven’t realized yet, 50+ games into the season, Wilkes-Barre’s greatest strength is defense and goaltending. Pittsburgh can recall all the Jake Guentzel’s or Carter Rowney’s they want to, the defense is what gets the AHL Penguins to the best record in the AHL and a 10 point lead on the second place overall team in the league.

Penguins of all levels will be fine, provided no other injuries hit in the coming days. Wilkes-Barre should be seeing some combination of Josh Archibald or Carter Rowney back in town soon with Carl Hagelin and Conor Sheary making progress.

Wilkes-Barre recalled Christan Hilbrich from Wheeling before the defenseman recalls. They haven’t announced a move for another player from Wheeling in light of the recalls from Pittsburgh as of noon Friday.

In other news, the AHL Playoff Primer is out. Wilkes-Barre’s magic number is currently 37. A new twist this season is strength of schedule, listed in purple. The Penguins current strength of schedule is .576, third in the Atlantic Division. That number will change daily.

More later with the 3 p.m. Gameday setup against Albany and the post game recap later tonight.

Wheeling Wrap 2/14

But the momentum ran out for the Nailers playing their fourth game in five games in Kalamazoo, Michigan as the Nailers fell narrowly by a score of 5-4. Gage Quinney scored a goal and assisted on two others. The Nailers came back from two goals but the K-Wings scored the go ahead with under five minutes left.
