Thursday Notes 1/26

Some roster moves made today.

Defenseman Steve Oleksy cleared waivers Thursday afternoon and his clearing paved the way to Carter Rowney’s recall from Wilkes-Barre to Pittsburgh. Rowney’s first NHL recall. To be determined is whether or not Rowney will actually dress when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Boston Bruins tonight in Boston. Patric Hornqvist participated in the morning skate at TD Garden this morning and looked none the worse for wear. He’s listed as a game time decision.

If I were coaching the team instead of just blogging about it, I would let Hornqvist sit and dress Rowney. What is the point of holding Rowney out of Wednesday’s game against Syracuse, recalling him Thursday just to sit him and only send him back to Wilkes-Barre once the Penguins go on the all-star break? Let Hornqvist rest his leg and get closer to 100% and give Rowney a shot.

Jonathan had some interesting ideas based off of what can happen if Hornqvist can or can not go that you can read about here. He also had some quotes that Seth got from Tom Kostopoulos and Clark Donatelli on Rowney’s first call-up that are worth checking out as well.

Steve Oleksy is back in the AHL after spending the better part of the last two and a half months in the NHL. Oleksy’s last game with Wilkes-Barre was November 6 against the Providence Bruins.

In wake of the Oleksy reassignment, the Penguins, who now are overflowing with defensemen, sent Michael Webster back to Wheeling. Seth got confirmation from practice this morning that Tim Erixon will be available Friday against Utica and that Oskar Sundqvist should be back Saturday in Binghamton.

Brett Stern remains up with the Penguins for now. My guess here is that he will likely be sent down to Wheeling by the weekend. They are probably keeping him up to insure that Erixon is indeed totally fine to go Friday in Utica.

I think that about covers it. Any other roster moves made will be addressed in the postgame recap of the Penguins trip to Utica Friday night. Look for the Gameday setup Friday at 3.

Wheeling Wrap 1/24

Noon Tuesday means that it’s time to look at how the Wheeling Nailers did against the competition in the ECHL this past week.

It was a positive week or the Nailers, as they collect two wins this week.

They started Friday in Norfolk taking on an Admirals team which was undefeated in 2017. They beat the Admirals soundly by a score of 9-2. Sean Maguire stopped 25 of 27 to pick up the win and improve to 7-5-1. The Nailers were up 1-0 at the end of the first then scored four goals in the second. Norfolk would come back and score two, but the Nailers would score four more in the third to win handily. Gage Quinney scored a goal and assisted on three others to earn first star honors. Only three Nailers skaters did not pick up a point in this one sided affair.

The Nailers then bussed north to Reading for a date with the Nailers. The only offense they needed was off the stick of Cody Wydo who scored two goals. Nick Sorkin assisted on each of them. Recently assigned Michael Webster also had an assist then was recalled back to Wilkes-Barre after the game. Doug Carr stopped 34 of 35. The Nailers won 2-1.

The Nailers have a 20-14-3-0 record good for 43 points and fourth place in the North Division.

This week, the Nailers close out the month of January with four games, three at home. The Nailers welcome the Toledo Walleye on Wednesday, the Quad City Mallard and Brampton Beats Friday and Saturday before closing out the month with a trip to Kalamazoo on Sunday.

Wheeling Wrap 1/17

Tuesday at noon around these parts means its’ time to take a look at the ECHL affiliate in Wheeling, WV to see how the boys fared.

The Nailers played four games in five days last week starting Wednesday at home against the Toledo Walleye. The Nailers would beat the ECHL’s best Walleye by a 5-2 score. Sean Maguire continued to shine in goal, stopping 31 of 33. Christian Hilbrich and Tyler Currier both had a goal and an assist, Kevin Schulze added two assists. The Nailers struck twice on the power play.

The two teams then headed west back to Toledo, Ohio. The Walleye narrowly defeated the Nailers 4-3 on Friday. Christian Hilbrich and Andrew Ammon both had a goal and an assist each and Sean Maguire took the loss, stopping 38 of 42 shots. Toledo struck twice on the power play, the Nailers didn’t in three tries.

Wheeling then returned home for a date with the Kalamazoo Wings and were beat 5-1 on Saturday. Doug Carr took the loss in net for the Nailers. Kalamazoo struck twice on the power play. Brett Stern scored the only goal for Wheeling on the power play.

Sunday, the Nailers got revenge in the rematch with the Wings in Michigan beating Kalamazoo by a 5-2 score. Christian Hilbrich netted his first ever professional hat trick and added an assist. Sean Maguire stopped 28 of 30 and picked up the win. Gage Quinney added a pair of assists and Michael Webster had a goal and an assist.

The Nailers sit fifth in the North Division with a 18-14-3-0 record, good for 39 points, just a point back from fourth place Adirondack, three off third place Reading and five points off second place Brampton. The Manchester Monarchs lead the North Division with 49 points.

This week, Wheeling heads to Norfolk Friday to take on an Admirals team that has won six in a row and is unbeaten in 2017 before heading to Reading to meet up with the Royals for a Saturday affair.

Thursday Transactions 1/12

A couple of transactions for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins happened Thursday.

Goalie Doug Carr was released from his professional tryout agreement and has rejoined the Wheeling Nailers. Carr picked up a win Saturday against Binghamton, stopping 33 of 37 shots.

Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel was returned to Wilkes-Barre by Pittsburgh. It was Ruhwedel’s second recall of the season only this time he nevere appeared in any games. David Warsofsky it appears fro now has the dubious distinction of staying up on NHL recall while Brian Dumoulin recovers from his broken jaw.

I’m curious to wonder if Pittsburgh will send Warsofsky back at some point and recall another defenseman to avoid exposing him to waivers.

Out the door, you can watch the AHL All-Star Classic on TV again this year. The AHL announced details today. It will be on MyNetworkTV locally as well as other regional sports channels.

Pens are back on the ice Friday in Rochester. Gameday setup hits the blog Friday at 3.

Wheeling Wrap 1/10

Noon Tuesday and it’s time for another look at how the Wheeling Nailers did this week.

The Nailers played just two games this weekend and split them both, but took three points out of the week. Let’s take a more in depth look…

Friday, the Nailers took it to the best team in the ECHL the Toledo Walleye. The Nailers walloped the Walleye by a score of 6-0. Sean Maguire started the game for the Nailers in net and picked up his first ever shutout as a professional with a 25 save performance. Wheeling struck twice on its two power plays and got  pair of goals from Garrett Meurs and Nick Sorkin. Christian Hilbrich, Tyler Currier, Jordan Kwas and Brett Stern all had two assists each.

Sunday, Wheeling hosted the Cincinnati Cyclones and lost 3-2 in overtime. The Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first but goals in the second and third period by the Nailers endured that Wheeling would take at least three points out of the weekend and it was just that as the Cyclones scored in overtime to beat the Nailers. Sean Maguire only faced 19 shots. Gage Quinney and Garrett Meurs scored for the Nailers. Wheeling wasn’t able to score on five power plays.

With the three point week, the Nailers draw closer to the fourth place Adirondack Thunder, just two points off with 35 and a 16-12-3-0 record.

This week, the Nailers play home and homes with Toledo and Kalamazoo. They face the Walleye this Wednesday at home, then Friday in Toledo. Then, the Nailers return home for a date with the K-Wings and then load a bus bound for Michigan for a 3 p.m matinee game Sunday with the Wings.

Wheeling Wrap 1/3

Happy New Year as the Wheeling Wrap returns from its two week, one day holiday hiatus as we look back at five games the Nailers played during the holiday break.

On Tuesday, December 18, the Nailers hosted the Manchester Monarchs and won 4-3. It was a back and forth affair as the Monarchs scored the opening goal at 9:44 of the first period. Wheeling would respond three times after Manchester would score to go ahead. Finally it was Jordan Kwas’ goal in the third period that put the Nailers ahead for good. Adam Krause had two assists and Sean Maguire picked up third star honors with 23 of 26 saves.

Thursday, Sean Maguire was back in net for the Nailers and Wheeling would come through with another win, 2-1 at home against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Derek Army scored early in the second period and the Nailers would make life easy for Maguire who only stopped 16 of 17 shots. It was enough to earn Maguire first star honors for the night.

On Tuesday, December 27, the Nailers traveled to Toledo to take on the Central Division leading Toledo Walleye and were dealt a narrow 4-3 loss. Wheeling scored all three of its goals in the second period in the span of 8:02. Both teams struck on the power play but Toledo struck once more to put the Walleye in front for good. Doug Carr took the loss, stopping 24 of 28 shots.

The Nailers lost Doug Carr to AHL recall to Wilkes-Barre and then traveled to Reading this past Friday and lost 4-2. Derek Army and Michael Webster scored for the Nailers, but the Royals scored the go ahead and insurance goal late in the third period. Sean Maguire took the loss with 24 saves on 28 shots.

On New Years Eve, the Nailers picked up a big 5-2 win over the Elmira Jackals at home.Kevin Schulze netted a pair of goals, Gage Quinney dished out three assists and Sean Maguire took home first star honors stopping 34 of 36 shots.

On Tuesday afternoon, the ECHL announced the playing rosters for the ECHL All-Star Classic which will be held in two weeks in Glens Falls, NY at the home of the Adirondack Thunder. The Wheeling Nailers will send Kevin Schulze to the games.

The Nailers sit fifth in the North Division with a 15-12-2-0 record good for 32 points.

This week, the Nailers play a pair of games at home hosting the Toledo Walleye Friday and the Cincinnati Cyclones Sunday.

I’ve Seen This Fish Before

Well, it’s the end of December and if you have followed the Pittsburgh Penguins organization from top to bottom, you know that this is the season for injuries.

You already knew that Chad Ruhwedel and Derrick Pouliot were up in Pittsburgh, but on Tuesday night, Brian Dumoulin took a puck to the face which broke his jaw. He’s out 4-6 weeks. He’ll likely be on a liquid diet as his jaw heals which means he will lose weight and muscle mass. Once he’s okay to eat solid food again, he’ll need to regain all that weight he lost and gain back the muscle and get his wind back. Depending on how all that goes, it could be 6 weeks, it could be longer.

David Warsofsky was recalled Wednesday and was a scratch in Pittsburgh’s 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Matt Murray started that game and was mysteriously replaced in goal in the third period by Marc-Andre’ Fleury. Murray was on the bench for the third, but on Thursday it was revealed that he is week to week with a lower body injury.

There go those benign terms again. Hockey will always be a niche sport in America unless or until owners start disclosing what the injury is and the time frame for recovery (like Dumoulin’s injury) beyond that, any run of the mill sports fan has no time for body, “injury” and “day-to-day.” Aren’t we all?

Anyway.

Tristan Jarry was recalled from Wilkes-Barre Thursday evening. In the same release, and little bit of a silver lining for a Wilkes-Barre club that only has six defensemen on its roster, Pittsburgh sent Derrick Pouliot back to Coal Street.

Jarry is 13-5 with a 2.15 GAA and a .921 save percentage in the AHL and was second in the league in wins at the time of his recall.

It’s Casey DeSmith’s team for now here in Wilkes-Barre. The only question which remained was which goaltender was going to be recalled from ECHL Wheeling. The Nailers have Doug Carr and Sean Maguire. Maguire is on an NHL contract and should be a mainstay in Wilkes-Barre soon.

Well, it was Doug Carr that Wilkes-Barre signed to a professional tryout agreement and not Maguire, which the Penguins could have recalled.

This is a good thing. The reason why is because Maguire is at a key point in his development, just recently being cleared to play from his injury in the Fall. Calling him up to have him sit and hold a clipboard watching DeSmith play does nothing for his development when he can get reps and carry the load in Wheeling.

Carr is 8-7-1 in 17 games for the Nailers and has a 3.31 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. He recorded a shutout against the Kalamazoo Wings this season.

The Coal Street press release linked above has more, including the time he played two periods of preseason play for the Penguins against Hershey and didn’t allow a goal and his numbers with Albany last year in a similar situation that he is in now.

Personally, I think the Penguins will be fine, but I say that every year when the injuries start. By mid-March when Wilkes-Barre is mired in a four game losing streak because they are calling guys up from Wheeling every day and losing guys to Pittsburgh every hour, my tone may be different.

But we have seen this fish before.

DeSmith was likely getting the start Friday against Providence anyway, a team on a roll that Casey owns anyhow.

Gameday setup for tomorrow’s game against the aforementioned Bruins will be on the blog Friday at 3.
