RAPID RECAP – Pens LOSE 2-1

Wilkes-Barre’s free fall continues. A 2-1 setback to the Charlotte Checkers tonight.

Officials losing control of the third period will mask a slow start for the Pens in which they only had four shots on goal.

Charlotte got two goals in the second. Daniel Sprong scored a power play goal in the third to cut it to one, but after that the game revolves into a penalty fest.

More in a bit, Jarred Tinordi left in the third after blocking a shot and didn’t return.

GAMEDAY: vs. Charlotte 12/8

vs.

Who: Charlotte Checkers

Where: Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza

When: 7:05 p.m.

Last Game: Wednesday in Allentown, the Penguins were shutout 5-0 by the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. For Charlotte, the Checkers hosted the Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday and won 4-3. Aleksi Saarela had a goal and an assist for first star honors.

Last Meeting: October 7 in the home opener for the Penguins, the Checkers won 5-2. Daniel Sprong and Thomas DiPauli scored for the Penguin in the loss but Warren Foegele scored two shorthanded goals.

Record: For WBS: 13-6-1-1 (28 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division) // For CHA: 14-8-0-1 (29 pts., 4th place Atlantic Division)

Referee(s): Jeremy Tufts / Reid Anderson

Linesmen: James Tobias / Scott Pomento

Why You Should Care: Penguins come into tonight’s contest against Charlotte dropping 5 of their last 6 games. The Penguins have also given up 7 shorthanded goals this season. Warren Foegele scored two of those on the Penguins home opener October 7. In order for the Penguins to win this game, they may need to employ the KISS method.

Other Game to Watch: The Syracuse Crunch have won seven games in a row and take this streak into Binghamton tonight as the Devils are waiting to play the upset after their big overtime win over the Laval Rocket Wednesday.

Roster Moves 12/7

Here’s what happened today lineup wise throughout the organization:

– Frank Corrado was recalled and Justin Schultz was placed on injured reserve. Mike Sullivan told media that Schultz is week to week with a lower body injury. When I saw the injury, I immediately thought high ankle sprain. Those are inoperable. Sullivan indicated that the injury would not require surgery and you really don’t operate on sprains, so that further confirms my suspicion that it’s a high ankle sprain.

Greg McKegg cleared waivers. He wasn’t immediately assigned to Wilkes-Barre. Pittsburgh’s roster, with Schultz on IR, McKegg waived and Archibald still here on conditioning, is at 23. So I wouldn’t expect McKegg to be assigned here.

– Sean Maguire will start tomorrow against the Charlotte Checkers, Head Coach Clark Donatello confirmed to Tyler today.

– Finally, as you’ll see when the GameDay setup tomorrow at 3 against Charlotte, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins have given up seven shorthanded goals this season. That’s the most allowed in the AHL through this week. Warren Foegele, you’ll remember last time Charlotte was in on opening night, scored two of those shorthanded goals. The Penguins will need to keep things simple I think if they want to have success against the Checkers. I guess we all find out together Friday at 7:05.

Tokarski’d — Pens LOSE 5-0

       @

0                                          5

Penguins have now dropped 5 of 6 games since the Thanksgiving break.

They haven’t scored a power play goal in for as long as I can remember.

They continue to give up shorthanded goals.

Results are expected, a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of the undermanned at defense Lehigh Valley Phantoms tonight in Allentown. First time that the Penguins have been shutout this season.

Anthony Peters opposed Dustin Tokarski

Lines were…

Adam Johnson – Colin Smith – Dominik Simon
Zach Aston-Reese — J-S Dea — Josh Archibald
Garrett Wilson – Gage Quinney – Daniel Sprong
Tom Sestito – Teddy Blueger – Thomas Di Pauli

Andrey Pedan – Zach Trotman
Chris Summers – Kevin Czuczman
Jarred Tinordi – Lukas Bengtsson

Lineup Notes: On Wednesday morning, the Penguins shipped Forwards Freddie Tiffels and Troy Josephs along with defenseman Ethan Prow and goaltender Colin Stevens to the Wheeling Nailers. The Nailers visited the Reading Royals so it was a short trip for the quartet. Also, at noon Wednesday, it was learned that Gregg McKegg was placed on waivers by Pittsburgh. If no one claims him, he’ll report to Wilkes-Barre. It’s roster jockeying by Jim Rutherford in the wake of the injury to Justin Schultz last night against the New York Rangers. As a precaution, defenseman Frank Corrado was a healthy scratch for Wilkes-Barre tonight.

Adam Johnson slotted in at left wing with Colin Smith and Dominik Simon on the top line, Tom Sestito went back to the fourth line with Blueger and DiPauli. Chris Summers jumped in on defense with Corrado likely to be recalled.

First Period: Strong opening start by the Penguin, outshooting the Phantoms 4-0 through the first five minutes. Phantoms would find themselves on a power play, didn’t score on it, but rode tat momentum into a 3-0 lead after the first period.

Pass to Mikhail Vorobyev from behind the net to him in front and all he did was directed the puck past Peters and in. 1-0.

Turnover in front of the net by Dominik Simon found Corban Knight’s stick and past Peters for a 2-0 lead. Peters got most of it, but it squirted through the pads and rolled harmlessly across the line.

Daniel Sprong tried to force a pass at the blueline which sprung Corban Knight and Oskar Lindblom on a two on one. 3-0.

So it was a positive start by the Penguins that snowballed into a 3-0 deficit in a span of 3:44 after the first period.

Second Period: Tyrell Goulbourne scored shorthanded on teh Penguins first power play of the game and that ended Anthony Peters night. Peters stopped 15 of 19 shots and the Penguins allowed their 7th shorthanded goal of the season. They only had 4 last year.

Wilkes-Barre wasn’t doing themselves any favors, only having one shot on goal for a good portion of the opening half of the period.

On another power play, Head Coach Clark Donatelli decided to put his fourth line out on a power play unit.

Maguire stopped all seven shots faced in the period.

Penguins to this point were playing well enough to win but were not helping themselves with turnovers and shorthanded goals and were just unable to solve Tokarski to this point.

Third Period: Penguins put up 14 shots on Dustin Tokarski, but he stopped them all. A shot was blocked by Andrey Pedan but the puck caromed to Matt Read who scored on Maguire to extend the lead to 5-0.

Wilkes-Barre’s inability to score on the power play and inability to score on Tokarski were all that the Phantoms needed to coast to the easy victory.

Three Stars: 3) Tyrell Goulbourne (goal, +1) 2) Corban Knight (goal, assist, +3) and 1) Dustin Tokarski (39 save shutout)

Around the Division: They all watched us.

Standings: Penguins (.667 percentage points) — Providence (.667) — Lehigh Valley (.646) — Charlotte (.630) — Bridgeport (.591) — Hershey (.521) — Hartford (.417) — Springfield (.380)

Wheeling Update: The Nailers fell in Reading tonight 2-1. Hunter Fejes had the only goal for the Nailers.

Depending on schedules, I may have a blog on more moves in Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre and Wheeling. If not, check back for the Gameday setup Friday at 3 against the Charlotte Checkers.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 9

Have we settled into a groove here in the Week 9 Chirps from Center Ice AHL Power Rankings?

Reason why is that there is no reason to switch up the top two this week. Manitoba is just plastering teams right now and Toronto remains a strong threat any given night.

Stockton moves up to third as they continue to stockpile points.

Any time you take down one of the best teams in the league in Wilkes-Barre, you are going to draw attention like Rochester in fourth this week.

Finally, in fifth, Rockford seems to have ironed out problems that have bothered them of late and are second in the Central behind the Moose and fifth in this weeks Rankings.

Click past the IceHogs if you didn’t link in direct to see where your favorite team ended up this week.

Boiling a Frog — Pens LOSE 4-3 (OT)

       @

3                                          4

Milwaukee tried this analogy Friday and it nearly paid off.

Rochester didn’t need to Saturday.

Hershey played the parable to perfection Sunday and won 4-3 in overtime against the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins.

If you don’t get the analogy, the proper way to boil a frog is just let it slowly warm itself in a pot of cold water until the water reaches a boil and it’s too late for the frog to do anything.

Metaphorically speaking, it’s an inability or unwillingness of someone or something to react to or be aware of threats that arise gradually.

How does this apply to today’s game? The Penguins jumped out to a 2-0 lead, then got lulled into a trance that the Hershey Bears put them in with a ton of time left on the clock. After a Liam O’Brien goal set off Hershey’s annual teddy bear toss, it was only a matter of time before the Bears tied the game. At that point it was just a matter of whether the game would end in regulation or overtime.

It looked for a minute that the Bears would win in regulation after a failed Penguin clear, but :55 later Tom Sestito scored to send it to overtime. Chris Bourque ended it in overtime on a power play goal.

Simply put, Penguins had the early jump but were never able to put away the Bears, despite the two goal lead early. Hershey started punching back and the Penguins never countered.

3 out of 6 points for the weekend with no actual Penguin goaltender under contract to NHL Pittsburgh is something we would have all signed up for the minute Tyler tweeted on Thursday that Sean Maguire was sick and could miss the weekend.

Anthony Peters opposed Pheonix Copley.

Lines were…

Zach Aston-Reese — J-S Dea — Josh Archibald
Tom Sestito – Colin Smith – Christian Thomas
Garrett Wilson – Gage Quinney – Daniel Sprong
Jarrett Burton – Teddy Blueger – Thomas Di Pauli

Andrey Pedan – Lukas Bengtsson
Kevin Czuczman – Zach Trotman
Jarred Tinordi – Frank Corrado

Anthony Peters – Colin Stevens

Lineup Notes: Jarrett Burton, Tom Sestito and Gage Quinney were in for Adam Johnson, Ryan Haggerty and Dominik Simon. Chris Summers was out for Lukas Bengtsson who was back in. Christian Thomas played in his 300th AHL game.

First Period: Penguins struck first early when Gage Quinney returned to the lineup and made a splash, scoring here in this scramble…

Quinney’s line was the best line for the Penguins in the period, as Garrett Wilson hit a post during a sequence.

Peters was dialed in, stopping a point shot by Chris Bourque on a power play for Hershey.

Daniel Sprong was the first Penguin to 10 goals after he put this one in teh net off a nice setup from Gage Quinney…

… Garrett Wilson assisted on that goal, giving him an even 200 points in the AHL split with 110 goals and 100 assists.

Copley himself made a great save late on Zach Trotman as it settled 2-0 for the Penguins heading into the….

Second Period: Penguins negotiated through a bit of penalty trouble to start the period, then went a long period between whistles.

Then Liam O’Brien set the avalanche of bears for the Bears with this goal with 6:33 left in the period…

Teams actually came back out to continue play, Mattias Bau hit a post.

Third Period: Liam O’Brien collected his second goal of the game on a delayed call off of a nice pass by Chris Bourque that tied the game at two.

Hershey only did a GIF of the O’Brien goal that set off the bears. If you are going to do something, see it all the way through!

Teams trade goals :55 apart from one another when Andrey Pedan flubbed a clear not once but twice, then had a Jonas Siegenthaler shot go off of his skate and in to make it 3-2 Hershey.

But friend of the Bears Tom Sestito created a turnover, went to the net and finished off a nice pass from Josh Archibald that tied the game again, this time at 3…

Overtime: Garrett Wilson took a puck over the glass delay of game at the end of regulation, so that meant in overtime the Bears had a 4-on-3 power play.

Chris Bourque added another notch to what is quickly becoming an AHL Hall of Fame career…

Three Stars: 3) Jonas Siegenthaler (goal, +2) 2) Liam O’Brien (two goals, +3) and 1) Chris Bourque (overtime game winning goal, assist, -1)

Around the Division: Light day otherwise in the Atlantic Division with this being Sunday and all. Charlotte beats Springfield 4-3 and Providence beat Bridgeport 4-1.

Standings: Penguins (.700 percentage points) — Providence (.667) — Charlotte (.630) — Lehigh Valley (.630) — Bridgeport (.591) — Hershey (.521) — Hartford (.417) — Springfield (.380)

Wheeling Update: The Nailers were not successful at home against the Fort Wayne Komets, losing earlier in the day Sunday 4-3. Goaltender Adam Morrison fell to 0-3 on the season since the trade with Rapid City, stopping 31 of 34 shots.

Video Highlights:

Power Rankings hit the blog Monday at 4. But for any news worth mentioning, Wilkes-Barre is back in action Wednesday at Lehigh Valley. Gameday setup for that matchup will hit the blog Wednesday at 3.
