Last Game: Wednesday in Allentown, the Penguins lost 4-1 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. It was at the seventh straight win for the Phantoms. Thomas DiPauli scored the only gaol for the Penguins. It was his first goal as a professional. For Bridgeport, the Sound Tigers beat Hershey in a shootout 4-3 last Saturday. Andrew Rowe scored the only goal of the shootout to give Bridgeport the win.

Last Meeting: November 5 in Bridgeport, the Pens won 7-1. Jake Guentzel was named first star of the game with two goals and two assists.

Record: For WBS: 10-3-1-0 (21 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division)  — For BRI: 8-4-0-0 (16 pts., 3rd place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Bridgeport is dangerously underrated. Penguins crushed the Sound Tigers the last time the two teams met but expect a different outcome tonight in that this game should be a lot tighter than the first.

Four Straight to Get to Seven — Pens LOSE 4-1

WBS       @       button_lv200

  1                                       4

In the third period of a tight game, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms explode for three straight goals and win this one 4-1. It’s the seventh win in a row for the Phantoms, who are edging closer to the Penguins at the top of the Atlantic Division. Lehigh Valley scored four straight goals and have now won seven games in a row.

Anyone looking at just the score line would think that it was a blow out win by the Phantoms and they couldn’t be more wrong.

Third period. Tie game at 1-1. Shot from the point deflects off of Chad Ruhwedel to Greg Carey down low who catches Penguins starting goaltender Tristan Jarry out of position and puts it behind him.

Later in the period, Lukas Bengtsson took an uncalled high stick that briefly stunned him and put him out of position when Taylor Leier scored to make it 3-1.

T.J. Brennan hit an empty net from 180 feet away that made it 4-1 in garbage time.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. The Penguins probably will never be able to hash out this equation with the Toronto Marlies because they only play them twice this season but with the Phantoms, these two teams meet 11 more times.

It was the aforementioned Tristan Jarry against Alex Lyon.

Lines were…

Garrett Wilson – Carter Rowney – Tom Kostopoulos
Kevin Porter – Jake Guentzel – Dominik Simon
Thomas DiPauli – Oskar Sundqvist – Josh Archibald
Reid Gardiner – J-S Dea – Patrick McGrath

Reid McNeill – Chad Ruhwedel
David Warsofsky – Lukas Bengtsson
Cameron Gaunce – Stuart Percy

Tristan Jarry – Casey DeSmith

Lineup Notes: Today was the 300th AHL game for Kevin Porter. The second game in a row that the ‘GRK’ line was broken up. Garrett Wilson was on the top line with Jake Guentzel centering the second line. Sahir Gill took warmups but was scratched. Tim Erixon is battling a lower body injury and was a scratch.

First Period: No scoring, but both teams did everything but score.

Carter Rowney actually did…

…but it was waved off by referee Alex Garon on account of incidental contact with the goaltender. That player was Garrett Wilson. Tough call to make, but these officials have to allow these goaltenders to play their position.

Tristan Jarry turned away all 16 shots he faced by the Phantoms high powered offense. He was on his game early on. He stopped Scott Laughton point blank after the Penguins failed to score on the only power play in the period.

Second Period: Thomas DiPauli was featured by Coal Street this week, so what does he do to back up the press? Score a dirty goal.

Phantoms then had a chance to go on a power play and Tristan Jarry made a couple of big saves for his team. Colin McDonald whiffed on a rebound laying there before Jarry covered. Penguins got a chance to go on a power play and Chad Ruhwedel struck iron.

Corban Knight scored for the Phantoms on what looked like a lucky goal…

Third Period: Wilkes-Barre went 0-for-5 on the power play tonight. Tom offered some foreshadowing…

They didn’t. They got close when Alex Lyon stoned Oskar Sundqvist in close off of a perfect deed by Kevin Porter, but almost doesn’t count.

Lehigh Valley weathered the early storm and scored to go ahead on the Greg Carey goal reference earlier in the lede…

Smidge has a tendency to jump on the table where the computer where I watch the games from. She is here most of the time anyway, so who’s table is it, really?

Taylor Leier scored 54 seconds later…

Don’t worry. Smidge is 12 years old, which is like 84 in cat years. She’s pretty spry for an octogenarian.

Joking aside, the Phantoms shut down the Penguins power plays that were awarded by referees Chris Schlenker and Alex Garon. If the Penguins score on one or two of them, it’s an entirely different result quite possibly.

T.J. Brennan with army sniper marksmanship on this empty net goal from deep in his own zone iced the game away…

Before you think the sky is falling, remember that this is just the third time in 14 games where the Penguins have allowed more than two goals.

Three Stars: 3) Greg Carey (game winning goal, +1) 2) Alex Lyon (30 saves on 31 shots) and 1) Corban Knight (goal, +1)

Around the Division: Hershey beats a bad Utica team 4-2 in New York…Hartford battles back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Springfield Thunderbirds 3-2 in a shootout. Bridgeport and Providence were off.

Standings: Penguins (.750 percentage points) — Lehigh Valley (.731) — Bridgeport (.667) — Hershey (.607) — Springfield (.571) — Providence (.423) — Hartford (.357)

Wheeling Update: The Nailers did not play today.

If the Phantoms put up video highlights I will edit those in when I see them. Otherwise, short of anything breaking news wise Thursday look for the next blog update to come Friday for the Gameday setup at 3 p.m. against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

AHL Power Rankings: Week 5

Week 5 and we are approaching mid-November. Have you made Thanksgiving plans yet?

There is a bird at the top of the AHL Power Rankings this week which is the same bird that was number one last week. It’s the Penguins.

Here’s the reasoning why. They get shutout at home by the Toronto Marlies Friday, then turn around and allow the P-Bruins and Wolf Pack to score just one goal a piece. Meanwhile, Toronto goes to Allentown and is obliterated by the Phantoms 7-2. The Penguins are the best team in the AHL despite the setback to the Marlies.

Now the Phantoms? Lehigh Valley is the hottest team in the AHL right now, winners of six straight. They are number two this week and have a huge date with the Penguins at home Wednesday. If the Phantoms win Wednesday, the Chirps from Center Ice clairvoyants foresee Lehigh Valley being number one next week.

But that’s getting too far ahead of ourselves.

If you notice that a team in the top ten this week has fallen far this week, it’s because there are a boatload of teams that are making a case for a higher ranking and really no room in the top 15 or 20 for these teams, which you will see drop out of the top 10 and into the bottom 10.

I won’t keep you any longer. Click through the jump to see the full list if you didn’t link in direct.

First to Ten, Perfect on Sunday’s — Pens WIN 4-1

WBS          @          button_hfd200

4                                              1

It’s gotta be something about Sunday’s.

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins remain perfect on Sunday afternoon games and are the first team in the American Hockey League to ten wins as they beat the Hartford Wolf Pack by a score of 4-1. Two power play goals in the first period were enough cushion that the Penguins needed to pick up the win.

Here are some more nuggets for you.

Tristan Jerry opposed Magnus Hellberg.

Lines were…

Thomas DiPauli – Carter Rowney – Tom Kostopoulos
Garrett Wilson – Jake Guentzel – Dominik Simon
Reid Gardiner – Oskar Sundqvist – Josh Archibald
Ryan Haggerty – J-S Dea – Patrick McGrath

Reid McNeill – Chad Ruhwedel
David Warsofsky – Lukas Bengtsson
Cameron Gaunce – Stuart Percy

Tristan Jarry – Casey DeSmith

Lineup Notes: Thomas DiPauli, Reid Gardiner and Patrick McGrath were all in the lineup for the Penguins for Kevin Porter, Sahir Gill and Jarett Burton. Porter, if you were around this afternoon, was suspended for the game. I had words with video on that here. Defensively, Tim Erixon yielded to Stuart Percy. It was the pro debut for Lukas Bengtsson, who took the spot that Ethan Prow had last night. Also, the “Greek” line was busted up. With Porter suspended, Jake Guentzel put in work at second line center.

I don’t know what is up with Reid McNeill and why Donatelli and company keep playing him. Reid had three penalties Saturday night against Providence and looked frustrated. Perhaps there is insulating going on with Ethan Prow, but they should let the rookie play.

Lots of video here with this one, so if you didn’t link in direct, hit the jump.

Kevin Porter Suspended One Game

Sunday afternoon, the AHL announced that Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins forward Kevin Porter has been suspended one game for this hit on Colin Smith Friday against the Toronto Marlies:

In real time, it looks worse than it is. Porter could have gotten more games if slow motion didn’t exist in my opinion. It does not look like that head was the principal point of contact and Smith did have his head down. Just one of those things that happened late in the third period of a 3-0 loss by the Penguins.

Porter will miss this afternoon’s contest against Hartford in what would have been his 300th AHL game. Presumably, he will hit the 300 mark this Wednesday in Allentown when the Penguins face-off against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.

More in a bit as the Penguins are in Hartford squaring off against the Wolf Pack at 5 p.m.

Last Game: Saturday at home against Providence, the Pens won 3-1. J-S Dea, Oskar Sundqvist and Jake Guentzel all scored and Casey DeSmith stopped 28 of 29 shots. For Hartford, the Wolf Pack were in Utica last night and lost in overtime to the Comets 3-2. Mat Bodie and Tanner Glass collected goals for Hartford in the loss.

Last Meeting: It was opening night in Wilkes-Barre back on October 15 and the Penguins won 6-2. Six different Penguins recorded a goal including Jake Guentzel, who also had three assists to go along with his gaol, good for first star of the game.

Record: For WBS: 9-2-1-0 (19 pts., 1st place Atlantic Division)  — For HFD: 3-7-2-0 (8 pts., 7th place Atlantic Division)

Why you should care: Penguins cannot take the Wolf Pack lightly this afternoon. Good teams beat all teams, not just some teams. Are the Penguins a good team or a really good team I think we all know the answer to this question, but the true answer may not come until the end of this game tonight,.
