Thursday Update

Only a couple of things to scrape together today:

–> Biggest news of the day is Eric Tangradi getting recalled to Pittsburgh since Sidney Crosby still isn’t ready to play. Tangradi is waiver exempt, so he can come up and down as often as Pittsburgh wants.

–> According to Hershey Bears beat writer Tim Leone and his Thursday practice update Dany Sabourin will be getting the start in net for the Bears tomorrow. Sabourin is 1-1 with a 3.71 GAA and a 0.868 SV% in two appearances against the Pens so far this season. I’d expect Brad Thiessen to get the start Friday. Thiessen’s numbers in three games vs. the Bears is 2-1 with a 134 GAA and a 0.943 SV%.

–> The AHL announced its 2012 Hall of Fame Class today.

Gameday update will be up at it’s usual 3 p.m. spot here on the blog tomorrow. I have been kicking around the idea of publishing it earlier. Need your feedback:

Let’s Go Pens!

LSMFT – Pens WIN 4-2

Pens win in Norfolk tonight 4-2 to move the road record to an impeccable 7-0 and reclaim first place in the East Division with some games in hand.

Dustin Jeffrey and Steve MacIntyre were in the lineup tonight on their conditioning stints from Pittsburgh. Ryan Craig returned from knee injury. Pens had the top defense in the league against Norfolk and its top offense.

Brad Thiessen vs. Dustin Tokarski.

First Period: Eric Tangradi scored a garbage rebound goal while Norfolk’s Tyler Johnson was in the box for a hook on Simon Despres. Norfolk would then get a power play with Philip Samuelsson in the box for a cross check. The Admirals would hit the post twice but Cory Conacher would pot a goal on a similar greasy rebound type ala Tangradi a few minutes before to tie the game. Later, Tokarski would get his pocket picked by Ben Street as Dustin went behind his net to handle a puck. Then, almost right after that, Wilkes-Barre would come in 4 on 2 and Ryan Craig would just lob a puck at Tokarski which Simon Despres would slam home.

Second Period: No goals would come in this period and the Pens would clamp down on Norfolk this period by only allowing the Admirals three shots on goal. I expected a more focused effort by Norfolk but the Penguins just shut them down. Outside of the defensive clampdown the period was highlighted by a clean bodycheck by Carl Sneep which led to a linebrawl of sorts.

Third Period: Steve MacIntyre would hit Scott Jackson along the boards at center ice which Jackson took offense to. He had to fight MacIntyre in given the situation but was outmatched the entire way. MacIntyre had his way with him. Radio mentioned that since the beginning of the second period and through 37:30 since, the Admirals only took 10 shots on goal. But, the pesky Admirals would score on a Pierre-Cedric Labrie goal which went very slowly in the net. A pile of bodies in front of Thiessen kept Brad from making the save. After that, the Admirals would pull Tokarski but in doing so were not allowed into their offensive zone. Eric Tangradi would pick off a pass and lob it into the empty net to seal the 4-2 win.

Three Stars: 3) Pierre-Cedric Labrie (goal, even) 2) Simon Despres (goal, assist, +1) and 1) Ben Street (goal, two assists, +2)

Around the Division: Syracuse was idle. Hershey played Binghamton in Chocolatetown and allowed the B-Sens 15 shots and won easily 3-0.

Standings: WBS goes to the top with 18 points to Norfolk’s 17. Hershey sits in third with 16 points. Syracuse, idle, has 13 points and Binghamton 12 points.

Pens will drive overnight home then travel Friday to Hershey. Rematch Saturday at home against Norfolk.

Let’s Go Pens!

(my more mature audience may remember the acronym “LSMFT” meaning “Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco” – well, let this headline stand for “Lucky Seven (wins on the road) Makes For (fine) Tweeting”) Can’t fit that all in a headline and make it look good so there you go…

Last Game: This past Saturday in Bingahmton the Pens won in a shootout 2-1. Zach Sill had a goal in regulation while Brad Thiessen made 28 saves. For Norfolk, this past Sunday in Providence the Admirals won 3-0. Dustin Tokarski had a 37 save shutout.

Record: For WBS: 7-2-1-1 (16 pts., 2nd place East Division) — For NOR: 8-4-0-1 (17 pts., 1st place East Division)

Why you should care: Huge test tonight for the Penguins. The Pens are perfect on the road and playing the division leader. Norfolk is probably going to be a thorn in the side of Pens fans all season long. Norfolk may pose a bigger threat to the Penguins long term plans than the Bears.

Reinforcements

Pittsburgh assigned Dustin Jeffrey and Steve MacIntyre to Wilkes-Barre on conditioning assignments this afternoon. They can stay in the AHL for a maximum of 14 days before they would then need to clear waivers if they wanted to stick around for day 15 and beyond.

I’d expect MacIntyre to stick around long term Jeffrey to go back up. Jeffrey has nothing left to prove in the AHL. His serious knee injury may have hampered his development in the NHL, but there is nothing left for him to prove at the AHL level.

I still am optimistic enough that WBS will see Richard Park, Mark Letestu or Jeffrey here long term. There could be a trade in the works, but even if, you can’t move all these bodies. Someone has to come to the farm.

EDIT: Mark Letestu was just traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 4th Round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Stay tuned, and Go Pens!

Gonna Need a Program…

Enough moves to kick out a blog post. We are going to speculate here, too.

From the Bombulie afternoon update, Ryan Craig is back. Also, Cody Chupp was re-assigned to Wheeling.

On top of that, Wheeling beat writer Shawn Rine tweeted that Ryan Schnell and Matt Rust were also sent to the Wheelhouse.

Geoff Walker and Boris Valabik still are not quite ready to play yet. But, there’s been rumblings about Tyler Kennedy and Sidney Crosby coming back soon so you would have to think that some bodies could be sent to Wilkes-Barre.

Here is where the speculation picks up…

Mark Letestu, Richard Park and Dustin Jeffrey all could end up here long term. All would have to clear waivers. All could clear waivers. Jeffrey has been a scratch, Letestu also and Park really was brought in to be the tweener and more so for scoring depth and when not needed in Pittsburgh he can do so in Wilkes-Barre. I do not see Joey Vitale being put on waivers. Surely someone could claim him (and likely would)

So it’s a lot of woulds and coulds. I’m going to need a program to keep up with all the changes!

This is where the speculation ends.

May as well throw some quotes at you as I attended the WBS Penguins Multi-Year Investor Meet and Greet at the Mohegan Sun Casino tonight.

Ryan Craig. On how he feels and whether he’ll play Wednesday, “I really don’t want to ride seven hours on a bus (to Norfolk, VA) and not play.”

Robert Bortuzzo. On whether he plans on going back to Pittsburgh soon, “Maybe.” (with a smile and half joking, he didn’t know or if he did wasn’t saying)

Geoff Walker. On how he is doing and whether he’s playing. “Not quite there yet, getting better”

So some actual reporting to go along with this blogpost as well as fueling the rumor mill fire.

Boys board a 7:30 a.m. bus to Norfolk tomorrow. Game is Wednesday for first place. If there is no news to report, check me out Wednesday afternoon for the Norfolk “Gameday.”

Let’s Go Pens!

Smokin’! Pens WIN 2-1 in Shootout

Wilkes-Barre remains perfect on the road tonight after winning 2-1 in a shootout. Brad Thiessen played about 58 minutes of shutout hockey before being stymied by Mike Hoffman.

I love when I get the idea for my headline I am going to run while I am either at the game or on the way from the game. Tonight I got my headline in the first intermission and would have run it regardless of tonight’s outcome. Why? The game was basically delayed by 5 minutes tonight due to smoke in the mechanical room at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Look, firefighters!

So after all this, Brad Thiessen vs. Robin Lehner. Matt Rust was in for Paul Thompson as the only lineup change.

First Period: Brandon DeFazio and Ryan Schnell had the best chance of the very young evening early. Carl Sneep (on his birthday) had a gaping net which he could not score on the backhand in. Then the Pens would get a power play and spend 1:55 in the offensive zone but not score. Later, Zach Sill and Ben Street would work some magic shorthanded but not score.

Second Period: Good instincts by net minder Robin Lehner, seeing the Penguins making an on the fly change he’d fire the puck into the changing bodies and get the Pens caught for too many men. Really a smart move by him. Bryan Lerg would get denied shorthanded. Later, Zach Sill would lob a puck at Lehner which would go in the net. Really a changeup that foiled Lehner. After that the two teams would go back and forth all period with no goals to come from it.

Third Period: Loud ping heard behind Thiessen’s net as a puck would ring off two posts but not go in. Later a Carl Sneep shot nearly deflects in the net off of the helmet of Eric Gryba. Binghamton would get a power play and not even set up shop much to the dismay to the Binghamton faithful. Then Joey Mormina would get called for tripping, and mouth off to the officials and get a misconduct call and would be done for the night. I knew that it would potentially be a turning point with the B-Sens going on the power play and the teams best defenseman done for the night. Sure enough, Mike Hoffman would spoil Thiessen’s shutout bid and tie the game late. Huge momentum shift as the final minutes were all Binghamton.

Overtime: Mark Parrish would get denied early by the toe of Thiessen. Pens had some chances but the shootout is where we would go.

Shootout: Colin McDonald, Niko Dimitrakos and Bryan Lerg would score in the shootout and Thiessen stopped two of four Binghamton shooters and the Pens would get the two points, sweep the weekend and get to first place in the East Division all while down two of the top defensemen, their captain and life of the team hurt. Unbelievable.

Three Stars: 3) Zach Sill (goal, +1) 2) Brad Thiessen (28 saves on 29 shots) and 1) Bryan Lerg (game winning shootout goal, even)

Around the Division: Bridgeport beat Norfolk 3-2 tonight. Suddenly the high-powered Admirals look pedestrian, losing two this weekend. They try to salvage points Sunay afternoon in Providence. Syracuse beat Rochester 5-2. Five different Crunch found the back of the net.

Standings: Penguins are in first place in the division. with 16 points. Norfolk has 15 points in second. Idle Hershey sits third with 14 points. Syracuse and Binghamton are tied with 12 points but since Syracuse is percentage points better than Binghamton they are fourth and Binghamton fifth.

No matter what happens tomorrow in Providence, it looks like Wednesday’s game is going to be for first place in the division.

Pens are probably off till Monday, travel to Norfolk Tuesday for the game Wednesday. As the updates are available I will have them here on the blog but for the nuggets, lend a follow to me on Twitter if you haven’t already.

Go Pens!
