Chirps from Center Ice

A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

The Most Confusing Post You Will Ever Read…

Lots of chatter up on the internet and speculation on the Twitter side on what cities the AHL will be playing hockey next season.

We know that Pittsburgh will be supplying players to Wilkes-Barre for next year and beyond so if you are not in to rumor mongering, stop reading.

There have been tons of reports that the Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg to bump out the Manitoba Moose. Including this report from The Globe and Mail. In fact, if the Thrashers move to Winnipeg, there have been rumors that they will take the Moose namesake.

So where do the Moose land? Reports today out of St. John’s, Newfoundland have them playing at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s. The article eludes to a Friday press conference however the Manitoba Moose deny such press conference from occurring.

If the Thrashers move to Winnipeg, it would then leave the Chicago Wolves without an NHL parent. The Wolves are currently the AHL affiliate to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Winnipeg AHL team, in this case the team rumored to move to St. John’s, would be the new Winnipeg NHL teams’ AHL team.

Sigh. Still with me? Good, cause it gets better.

There is more to this AHL merry-go-round of affiliation drama. The Buffalo Sabres have bought, or are close to buying, haven’t done so yet but will soon, the Rochester Americans. Who knows. But then, what happens to the Portland Pirates who are the Sabres’ AHL affiliate? You basically need a Rosetta Stone to figure this one out. Chris Roy from the Maine Hockey Journal blog tries to make sense of it all in his entry:

  • Tampa Bay could pull out of Norfolk and move to Syracuse.
  • Florida, late of Rochester, could then marry up with Norfolk.
  • Anaheim and Portland, left at the dance by their dates, could then marry up again and we will party like it’s 2005.

Imagine for a second what this is doing to the stomachs of the fans in all of the cities affected by the speculation. That is why I say that Penguins fans have it so well because of the stable marriage between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre and grind and gnash my teeth whenever I read how people get bent out of shape that the team didn’t salute the fans like this one fan did in his letter to the Citizens’ Voice editor.

Hopefully, this merry-go-round of affiliation switches and “who’s on first” game of hide the truth will be over soon and we can all get back to playing hockey.

Go Penguins!

The Binghamton Senators are the 2011 Eastern Conference Champions after defeating the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 tonight in overtime to sweep the series 4-0.

Man.

Calder Cup Finals start next week. Elsewhere, The Hamilton Bulldogs staved off elimination tonight winning 8-1 versus the Houston Aeros. The Aeros still lead the series 3-1 and Game 5 is Friday in Ontario. The Bulldogs allowed Houston fifteen shots on goal all game. Wow.

Sill Re-Upps

Good news as I finished up my round of golf today. Penguins center Zach Sill was re-signed to a two year, two way contract today.

Official Pittsburgh presser here.

Analysis plus fight clips over at Bombulie’s blog.

Good signing. Sill deserves it. No bad for an undrafted kid out of the “Q”.

Figure the Sill signing is the first shoe to drop, expect more signings soon.

Go Pens.

Scrapping Procrastination….

Have decided to scrap the idea of running a post-mortem wrap here at Chirps from Center Ice on the 2010-2011 season. Every time I sat down to do it, I didn’t like it. I wasn’t going to just push through something sub-par for the sake of running something I said I was going to.

Bombulie had a neat Season Review in the print Sunday Citizens Voice. If you haven’t already picked up a copy, do so.

Jonathan also has a Depth Chart and a Contract Chart over on his blog.

I covered Games One and Two of the Eastern Conference Finals of Charlotte and Binghamton for Chasing Checkers this week. My literary works are here for Game One and here for Game Two.

I will check in here periodically and still haven’t decided if I want to run a weekly feature or maybe a mailbag or something for the rest of the summer. Been quiet on the Twitter side too, dying to live-tweet something, anything really.

Tomorrow I am golfing. First time all year. I am a horrible golfer, but I love to go out there and chunk it up.

The rest of the week, I’ll be watching AHL and NHL playoffs.

How many days till the Rookie Tournament?

Getting some sun…

Now that we are done, expect sparse updates from here until June – July. I have been away for the most part from Twitter / the blog. Mainly outside really enjoying this nice week of NEPA weather.

Bombulie has had some neat postseason wraps all this week at the Penguins Insider. Good stuff out of him.

To be honest, I haven’t even started the postseason wrap here. Still in shock that the season is over. I’ll make myself do it this weekend.

As you know, I’ll be covering Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals for the Chasing Checkers blog. I’m not going to mirror here, but if you want to see the work head over there Thursday night.

In the Western Conference, the Hamilton Bulldogs and Houston Aeros both outlasted their respective opponents in Game 7s. The Hamilton / Manitoba game went into THREE OVERTIMES! Yikes. Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals starts Friday in Houston.

Let’s Go Pens.

Hanging on by a String…

In real media, a “stringer” is usually a local correspondent who covers an event for another media outlet out of the area who could not either a) be at the event or b) not able to cover.

Chirps from Center Ice’s blogging pals “Chasing Checkers” put out a plea for help for Thursday’s Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Charlotte Checkers and the Binghamton Senators. Since I’m not ready to call it a summer just yet, I contacted them and offered my services and they accepted since they will actually be out of town on Thursday. I actually dropped this news over on the Twitter side this morning.

A few of you chirped in since Saturday night and asked if my allegiance will go behind Charlotte, Binghamton or someplace else.

My support is behind the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. What’s that? Oh, yeah, that’s right, they lost. So in that case, may the best team win the Calder Cup this year. I have no rooting interest going forward. It will be nice to actually watch an AHL playoff game without the rooting interest and the roller coaster of emotions that comes with it.

So if you are interested, check out my piece Thursday night over at Chasing Checkers.

Soon, I will have a 2010-2011 season wrapup. I still find myself in shock over the chain of events which occurred, but life goes on.

Let’s Go Pens!

The Collapse that Shall Live in Infamy – Pens LOSE 4-3, series 4-2

Lots of people will write epitaphs on this season. Lots of opinions on where the Pens season went to the dogs after losing 4-3 tonight to the Charlotte Checkers.

You’ll have one side that will say that the season went to the dogs when Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Eric Tangradi were lost to either recall or injury.

You’ll have the other that will say that nothing matters in the regular season, it simply was a lack of execution by the Pens standards in not scoring enough goals in Charlotte.

If you ask me, the season went to hell late in the third period of tonight’s game. Up 3-0 late in the third, the Checkers stormed back ferociously and before you know it, it was a tie game. Then even before you could come to grips with reality that it was a 3-3 game Zac Dalpe scores late and makes it 4-3.

I had a thought in my mind with about 12:00 left in the third period that if the Pens were to have the bottom fall out of the season and lose the game, that the bitterness of such a collapse would be and extremely difficult taste to wash out of the mouths of fans who so passionately support hockey in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

A lot of people see me as the voice of reason whenever turmoil strikes on the ice during a game or a series. For that, I appreciate the kind words. I look at it in perspective. I don’t bet on the games. If the Pens go 80-0 or 0-80 it doesn’t affect me one way or another. My season tickets are paid for months beforehand. I don’t have a job in hockey. Nothing that happens on the ice affects me personally. The sun always comes up the next day.

But this collapse was inexcusable. Up 3-0 late in the third, the Pens looked like they went into cruise control. After Chris Terry put the puck where only a postage stamp could fit through, the Pens got a power play after Brian Strait and Ben Street (who returned from injury) came in on a 2 on 1 and Bryan Rodney knocked the net off. Pens did nothing with the power play. As soon as the Checkers killed it the Pens would see Brett Sutter score. Before it even sank in, the Checkers on the very next shift would score again to even the game at three when a Michel Jordan shot would deflect to Chris Terry again. Then, five minutes later, Zac Dalpe took a feed from Brett Sutter to seal the series for the Checkers.

Pens got second period goals from Ryan Craig at even strength and Corey Potter on the power play. The Craig goal was set up by a Ben Street shot that Murphy made a pad save on where Craig pounced on the rebound and cashed. The Potter goal was an NHL style slapper from the point which I thought deflected but apparently was clean. Joe Vitale scores the last goal of the 2010-2011 season for the Penguins shorthanded in the third period, which was an NHL caliber snipe.

58-21-0-1. 117 points, good for first place in the East Division and first place overall. Regular season was a success. The team in August was built for regular season success. Due to callups and injury in the regular season, Wilkes-Barre / Scranton went a lukewarm 6-6 in the postseason and bowed out in the East Division Finals to the Charlotte Checkers in 6 games.

I’m struggling for words now. So I will end this now.

Thank you Penguins for another great season.

Thank you to all who I have met because of the blog or the work I do on the Twitter side. Several points this season I had people come up to me at a game and say, “I really enjoy your work with your blog and stuff.” That means a lot to me, because I don’t consider this work.

Thanks to the people follow me for the in-game updates and for insightful analysis I provide them.

Thanks to the other AHL teams who follow me and the people who work for them and the beat writers and AHL insiders who follow and provide banter on the Twitter side. I must know what I am talking about having the likes of Patrick Williams, Jonathan Bombulie, Joy Lindsay, Chris Roy, Tim McManus, Bill Cain, John Walton, Cam Tucker, Keith Wozniak, Bob Howard and Shawn Rine in Wheeling all following me on Twitter and providing banter back and forth during the course of the year. Hopefully someday I can add the likes of Tim Leone, Michael Fornabaio, Lindsay Kramer, Dan Hickling, Pete Dougherty (if he ever decides to tweet) and maybe someday the League itself to follow along on the Twitter side.

Most importantly though, thanks to you guys who read this blog and recommend me to your friends.

Season wrap will be this week, as long as I come up with stuff to wrap. I may run a few things during the summer once the Calder Cup Finals are complete.

The sun is coming up tomorrow. Going out like this sucks. It really does. We were destined for a Calder Cup this year and it just was not to be.

Lets Go Pens!
