Chirps from Center Ice

A fan blog about the AHL's Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins

Inside the head of the Insider…

At last night’s booster club meeting, the members were treated to an audience with Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins beat writer Jonathan Bombulie of the Citizens’ Voice.

JB gave the 85 members in attendance some insight to some stories he couldn’t run or hasn’t run yet either on his blog, his twitter feed or in print.

  • After the Hershey game he spots Tim Wallace giving him the evil eye. “So,” Wallace said, “Big Upset, huh?” Apparently Wallace read what he wrote in the paper the day before on how no one was going to stop Hershey again this year.

  • Often JB gets asked why he always picks Hershey. His thought process is at least for now, you are asking him to predict against a team that has won two titles.

  • Asked who the front-runners are in the East Division this year, it’s WBS, Hershey and Charlotte in a three horse race. Norfolk / Bingo play dark horse / spoiler and Adirondack, Albany and Syracuse will be back markers. Once again, JB feels the East teams are way better than Atlantic teams.

  • As indicated in his blog and in print, JB was furious with the Holtby flashy glove save Saturday. He asked Wallace about it and he said that it made him look like a great shooter.

  • Bombulie gave us a layman’s explanation on the Tangradi to Wheeling transaction at the NHL roster deadline. It involves Jordan Staal’s long-term foot injury and the cap relief that goes with it. Pittsburgh needed to be as close as possible to salary cap as possible without going over. Calling up Patrick Killeen helped them accomplish that.

  • Jonathan had thought about doing an opinion piece on Nick Johnson. He feels Johnson has not been given a fair shake. In Pittsburgh’s training camp, the Penguins put him on what was basically a sixth line to light a fire under him. Thing is with Nick, he is not the one to necessarily show that there has been a “fire” lit under him. Bombulie predicts that Juice will have a big year.

  • There are serious efforts afoot to get Geoff Walker to meet radio 98.5 KRZ’s radio DJ Jumpin’ Jeff Walker.

  • On the whole “Tee sin v. Thee sin” pronunciation debate. It is Tee Sin. This comes straight from the man holds the name, Pens goaltender Brad Thiessen. The way it is pronounced doesn’t matter to Brad. On a side note, he is not related to Tiffany Amber Thiessen.

  • Best guys to deal with in the locker room were Ben Lovejoy and Brad Thiessen. Thiessen because he was a jounalism major and knows what the guys asking questions are looking for.

  • Brett Sterling v. Lawrence Nycholat will blow up at some point. If you don’t know what I am talking about, Sterling (while playing for Chicago last year) boarded Nycholat (while skating for Manitoba) and was suspended four games. Nycholat was injured and missed a good chunk of last year because of it.

  • Who the heck is Bryan Lerg? Bombulie will write about him. May do a Sunday feature. Lerg skated last year with the Springfield Falcons. They sucked last year so he goes to Finland. The team tells him that Signed Richard Park of who skated with the New York Islanders instead. Lerg knows John Hynes so he signed here. Will center the second line tonight because Ryan Craig will not play (consensus is that Craig has to get back into game shape) and we will get to see Nick Petersen tonight on the fourth line.

  • On the return of Joey Mormina. Mormina’s he signed with in Germany folded. So he came back to the States. He is a left handed shot, and since we are lacking a southpaw on the blue line, he slots in nicely. He will not play tonight v. his old team.

That’s about all Bombulie had to say. He fielded questions. I asked how Hershey can be stopped, especially on the power play. He stated players need to be disciplined in staying in their box on the penalty kill. Also, on penalties, we absolutely cannot take any against this team. Keith Aucoin running the special teams unit with Sheldon Souray’s 105 mph bomb from the point spells disaster for opposing teams.

Check me out here later as the Gameday Preview for the Adirondack game later drops around dinnertime. Also, stay tuned tonight on my twitter feed for the tweet-by-tweet, so to speak (or tweet?)

Bye Joey, Hi Joey

The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins announced today that they have signed Joey Mormina to a professional tryout contract.*

Don’t remember the name? Let me enlighten you. Mormina was only one half of the best defensive pairing in the American Hockey League two years ago with Ben Lovejoy. He was a ridiculous +37 that year. Last year with the downtrodden Adirondack Phantoms, he posted career best totals of 5-18-23.

Is this a knee-jerk reaction to the iffy defensive play Saturday? Is it a shot across the bow of the SS Corey Potter and SS Steve Wagner? Is it the end of Drew Fata and Jason DeSantis’ playing days in Wilkes-Barre? Who knows. I guess we find out tomorrow.

Nothing from Bombulie yet. I am sure he’ll have something later. Check him out for his take. Also, it’d probably do you well to check out what Tim McManus’ reaction / analysis is on his blog covering the Adirondack Phantoms.

In other news, Wilkes-Barre shipped forward Joey Haddad and goaltender Mattias Modig to Wheeling of the ECHL. With how loaded the roster is with talent at forward / center, it does nothing for Haddad’s development to have him in a suit eating nachos and wandering the concourse on gamedays. For Modig, this is an interesting one since many have mentioned that it makes no sense for him to come all the way over from Europe to just play in the ECHL. I don’t know. I’m not paid to analyze.

Later, Jonathan Bombulie holds court with the booster club members. Check me out later for a summary of what JB had to say.

* – I don’t know why that link to the Mormina signing on the WBS Page takes you to the splash page. I linked straight to the article. It’s there, trust me.

Pens / Bears Aftermath 10/10

I’m not going to do write-ups of every postgame, but last nights warrants a brief one.

–> Playoff atmosphere for Game 1. That intense.

–> Going back to intros, Brett Sterling didn’t get that much of an ovation. It is obvious that the attending had no idea how dangerous the man can be. I heard people saying, “Oh he’s the new guy.” I corrected those within earshot. He isn’t “the new guy” he is “The Ticket”. (Ticket to what?) The Ticket to a Calder Cup.

–> Andrew Hutchinson, Ryan Craig and Tim Wallace wore the A’s.

–> Steve Wagner had a forgettable game. Somehow managed 4 shots and a +1, but he let Steve Pinizzotto sneak in behind him for a breakaway goal which tied the score at 2 midway through the second, then his next shift he lets Jay Beagle blow past him, Beagle hits the post, skates around then drills Wagner after Steve had his head down.

–> Reactions from around Bombulie’s post-gamer on his blog and people I spoke with post game said Corey Potter was awful. For what it’s worth, I didn’t notice him.

–> Chris Conner is as fast as lightning. His never-say-quit attitude led to a gritty goal by Andrew Hutchinson to give us the lead at 3-2.

–>We were 1 for 5 on the powerplay. That 1 cash-in was the anomaly because the other 4 tries were god awful. There was a time we had :33 of a 5 on 3 and couldn’t even establish anything!

–> The more things change, the more things stay the same for the Bears. They murder you on the back door plays. Aucoin and Greentree both had powerplay goals which is mainly based on the spread-type play that Hershey institutes with their talented wingers. I plan on asking Bombulie about this tomorrow at the booster club meeting whether this can be stopped.

–> Braden Holtby looked good for the Bears but very pedestrian in the shootout. Bombulie described what I tweeted last night in his post-game wrap here. Alrighty then. Find a weakness, exploit it, win the game.

–> In the end, we won in a shootout. Two points. That’s all that matters. Now, replicate that 9 more times against this team this year and playoff success will take care of itself.

–> On the aforementioned Ticket, a picture of him and your blog author can be found here.

Tomorrow, it’s a booster club meeting for me where we’ll have a sit down with Pens’ beat writer Jonathan Bombulie. If there is something worthwhile look for me back here late Monday.

I’m always looking for a suggestion on what to add, so if you have one good let me know.

A Thousand-Mile Journey…

We are just outside of 24 hours of the puck dropping in Wilkes-Barre for the 2010-2011 AHL season. (Happy 75th, league!)

Couple links to get to today. See, if you follow me on Twitter, you get all these things as they happen.

  • Another AHL beat writer has decided to follow me. Welcome Tim McManus, covering the Adirondack beat in Glens Falls.
  • A bunch of teams announced Captains today. Not WBS. We’ll rotate some Alternates for a couple weeks, then name one probably by November. If you are new WBS fan, this is the modus operandi.
  • Bombulie reported that Drew Fata and Bryan Lerg signed PTOs today. Brad Thiessen will start the season in net v. Hershey. He also has projected lineup / lines for tomorrows home opener.
  • Check out Jonathan’s Penguins Season Preview. JB, if you lurk my blog, first thank you. Second I am bringing questions for you Monday for the booster club meeting. Get ready.
  • Tim Leone tweeted that Sheldon Souray is in Titletown, practicing, but will not play v. WBS tomorrow night.
  • How fast can you name the 30 teams in the league?*
  • The AHL and Professional Hockey Players Association ratified a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. If there is a lockout above us, we keep playing.
  • WBS posted its rosters today.
  • Up Interstate 81, Joy Lindsay tweeted that Ryan Keller is the Captain of the Binghamton Senators. On the other end of I-81, the aforementioned Tim Leone tweeted that Andrew Joudrey is the new captain of The Champs.
  • I’m starting to despise the Charlotte Checkers, as TSN’s Bob McKenzie tweeted that Justin Pogge and Brett Carson are on waivers.
  • I found a blog that covers the Charlotte Checkers. It looks like it is team run, but look to your left. Or if you are too lazy, just click here.
  • The AHL did a nice team-by-team capsule rundown.

Since I have the AHL Live All-Access Pass, I’m going to get a look at San Antonio / Chicago, start the night with Abbotsford / Grand Rapids and maybe a bit of Binghamton / Adirondack.

Tomorrow morning I’ll post what to expect on the Gameday posts I have brewing for 80 games this year. Check me out then. Later.

* – I missed Lake Erie and Milwaukee.

Getting Ready…

Tomorrow I’ll have a preview of my Gameday write-ups which will go up every WBS game day, just about 3 to 4 hours before the puck drops on a given game. Look for Saturdays around 4:05.

Meanwhile some news around the league today and with WBS in the mix:

  • Bombulie was all over the Tangradi demotion / call-up today on his blog. It would appears as if  there is something rotten in Denmark which too complex to put into words.
  • Derek Peltier found himself full time work. For the Peoria Rivermen.
  • In addition to the Peltier news, Ben Street was shipped to The Wheel today.
  • The AHL is going to a two ref system for 25% of it’s games this year and for all the Calder Cup Playoffs. Finally.
  • The league also revamped its website and also finally has a mobile site. Check that out.
  • League observer Patrick Williams (@AHLHockeyWriter) checked in with his AHL preseason rankings. Hershey is first and WBS is third. Charlotte is fifth. The East Division is L-O-A-D-E-D this year. Look out.

That’s about it. I got the AHL Live All Access Pass for this season. Goal is to watch at least every team once, not playing WBS. Should have that accomplished by mid-November?
