The Empire Strikes Back?

This afternoon Sheldon Souray was loaned to the Hershey Bears. Just when you thought the weak spot for the Bears was going to be defense, BLAM! they get Souray on loan. Article from Bears beat guy Tim Leone here.

Lots of mixed feelings on this from just about everywhere. I think that any time you get someone who is a three-time NHL All-Star is certainly helps your cause. It just makes this coming Saturday night in Wilkes-Barre all the more interesting.

Home in Wilkes-Barre, plenty of news:

  • Andrew Hutchinson and Ryan Craig both cleared waivers, per TSN’s Bob McKenzie.
  • Bombulie reported today that Pascal Morency was cut and Keven Veilleux missed practice today due to injury. It’s minor. He should be back next week.
  • Ryan Schnell was offered a contract.
  • I completely whiffed yesterday in mentioning here that Bryan Lerg is in town on a tryout. I remember the name from last year in our games with the Springfield Falcons. He plays center, and goodness knows we need depth at this position.

Bombulie scribbled down line combinations during practice today. Nothing official, but certainly close to what you will see Saturday.

If you are a goalie geek, the good people over at The Goalie Guild released the October Scouting Journal.

Apparently Eric Tangradi has been shipped to the Wheel and Patrick Killeen has been recalled from The Nail straight to The Show. These look to be paper transactions only, as they want to keep Tangradi and Killeen in town in case Arron Asham can’t play tomorrow and if Marc-Andre Fleury or Brent Johnson get food poisoning or something.

For what it is worth, and it is nothing official, I called the Coal Street offices today and spoke to my ticket representative Chris and inquired about the December 30 game v. Hershey in Pittsburgh. They (Pittsburgh) bought out the home date from us (Wilkes-Barre) so they (Pittsburgh) control the tickets for the event. Chris had nothing official but said there may be a pre-sale for Season Ticket Holders. Let me repeat that. He had nothing official. So please don’t take my word for it (or his for that matter.) I also inquired about the January 1 game v. Norfolk. He told me that WBS has pushed the AHL hard to get the date moved, but Springfield isn’t budging. That doesn’t make any sense, because you are taking away 400 people who could hypothetically be in Pittsburgh for the Winter Classic instead of in an AHL arena watching an AHL game.

More tomorrow right before the NHL season kicks off with Penguins / Flyers.

Don’t Waive Me Bro!

A very, very, very candid discussion one post down between you guys regarding who’s right / who’s wrong regarding this Radio Show business. Let’s get the word out there. Lots of views today too. Good. Glad you are here. Bookmark this page on your browser and visit often.

General consensus is that many fans dislike the “sanctions” imposed. You all know where I stand regarding this. I stand behind everything I said below and in the comment sections. The fact that a hack blogger like me has stirred up a debate like this means that I must be doing something right.

In other news from around the East Division, Andrew Hutchinson and Ryan Craig were put on waivers by Pittsburgh. Our friend Joe Depto from the Fourth Period reports that Simon Despres is on his way back to the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL. Analysis, as always, from Jonathan Bombulie here.

For the Bears, the Capitals assigned Jay Beagle, Mathieu Perreault and Andrew Gordon to Hershey today. Andrew Gordon has to clear by noon tomorrow. I think he will because the Florida Panthers waived Michael Grabner and he was claimed by the New York Islanders. Bears beat writer Time Leone tweeted today that that claiming off of the waiver wire lessens the risk of Gordon being claimed.

While I have eyes here, I did an AHL Preview for all 30 teams a few weeks ago. Just click the division you’d like to be taken to!

Fans First?

I normally don’t like posting in bunches, but I saw the new rules for the Radio Show and had to blog my thoughts.

In case you haven’t heard, the motto for the Pens this season is “Fans First”. This means the Fans come first. The radio shows have always been a favorite for me. But, Lucky’s Sporthouse is coming up with these ridiculous rules to make it a more “favorable experience” for the fans. Here they are, direct from the WBS Penguins website:

  • Seating during the Penguins Report Radio Show will be by reservation only.
  • Fans may call Lucky’s from 2-4pm & 9-11pm Monday thru Wednesday to reserve a seat.
  • Fans must speak to a manager when reserving their seats.
  • Seating in the hi-top area will rotate on a weekly basis.
  • Fans must show ID when arriving to claim reservations.
  • There will be two seatings based on 7:00pm start time for the radio show:  1st seating will be 5:45 – 2nd seating will be 6:15
  • Everyone in the party must make a dinner purchase.
  • Discounts will not be given on happy hour pricing.

Are you kidding me? Reservation only? And you can only call during certain hours AND you can ONLY speak to a manager AND you have to buy dinner with NO discounts? What? OK, so I call Tuesday at 3:05 to talk to a manager. What if the manager is in the bathroom? I have a full time job, I can’t call back in 10 minutes because I have a conference call at 3:15. Are you REALLY going to make me call during a small window to speak to a manager? Really? What if I don’t drive and don’t have an ID card? I can’t go to the radio show apparently. Borderline discriminatory.

EVERYONE has to make a dinner purchase huh? What if I have 3 kids? Do I have to buy them a dinner? Really? Run us through the ringer of calling between a small window, then make me, my 74 year old Aunt Netta, and my 3 kids, all ages 5, 8 and 12 respectively buy dinner too? You should just charge all the fans $15 to get autographs and call it a day.

I am only assuming that if you don’t make reservations you can’t, at the end of the show, get a players autograph and picture. What if I get out of work at WalMart across the street nightly at 8 p.m. and can’t go to the radio show anyway? What if Chris Conner is my favorite player and he’s at the radio show? You’re saying because I didn’t make reservations for a radio show I couldn’t attend anyway because I need this job to put food on my table and pay my bills (and pay for tickets to WBS Penguins games) I can’t get him to sign my t-shirt? What?

Whoever at the the Pens front office OK’d these ridiculous rules was smoking something funny that day. This does not put, “Fans First” by any stretch of the imagination.

Lucky’s, you can have your Radio Show and all that goes with it. You are not going to charge me for listening on the radio, are you? You know what, don’t bother. I’m not going to waste my time even listening.

News and Notes 10/4

There was a ton of news scattered about the hockey world today. Lots to get to. In no particular order:

  • Stand-up job by Eric P at the Wilkes-Blog doing individual player previews of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. I thought about doing something here, but not only did Eric beat me to it, he did a better job that I could have imagined. Eric previewed the Forwards and Defensemen. Goalies are later this week.
  • Dustin Jeffrey was sent to Wilkes-Barre today. Impeccable analysis from Jonathan Bombulie here. Further discussion regarding fringe players on Pittsburgh is found by Pittsburgh Penguins beat writer Rob Rossi here. Reading into it, WBS could potentially have a combination of Lovejoy, Engelland, Hutchinson sent to Wilkes-Barre or all three. Check it out.
  • Check out this goal from Kaspars Daugavins of the Binghamton Senators. Make sure you are watching it on an empty stomach because you will certainly lose you lunch after watching this sickening goal. If Daugavins tries this against WBS, and I am in attendance (which I will be if it isn’t the Thanksgiving game) I am standing up and applauding. Damn the consequences.
  • Great season preview of the Hershey Bears by a fan of theirs here (loaned to the Wilkes-Blog) Very in depth analysis.
  • This next bit of news should come as no surprise: Danny Richmond was waived today. If not claimed, (he won’t be) he’ll be assigned to the Toronto Marlies.
  • Staying in T-O Dot, ex-WBS Pen Luca Caputi was sent to the Marlies as well. This does come as a surprise to me. Caputi is NHL ready in my opinion and does legitimize the Marlies somewhat in the North Division this year. They do have Richmond acting on defense, so maybe it evens out?*
  • Devils goaltender and loyal Twitter user Mike McKenna was assigned to Albany today.
  • Alexandre Giroux was cut by parent Edmonton today. Man can’t catch a break. He’ll score a billion goals in the AHL but can’t hack it in the NHL? He makes the OKC Barons serious contenders.
  • Staying with Bears alumni, Chris Bourque has defected from the KHL and is now playing with Lugano in the Swiss League. As long as he stays far far far far away from North America, because Washington retains his rights through December. (The link is in Swedish. Have some fun and find a translator – even better – when you find it, cut and paste it in the comment section!)
  • Hate to go all Bears on you, but they revealed their alternate jerseys they will use for certain games in commemorating the AHL’s 75th anniversary today. Good stuff.

Pittsburgh has to have 23 guys on their roster by tomorrow. Stay with me on Twitter for reaction and check back here tomorrow afternoon for reaction way over the 140 character limit allowed over there.

* – of note, Nazem Kadri was also assigned. Toronto could do some damage in the North this year. And, if you are wondering why the negative tone on Danny Richmond, I could not stand him in Wilkes-Barre when he played here. Awful defenseman. Probably one of the worst ever to put on a Penguins uniform. Made players around him like Jon D’Aversa worse. D’Aversa is a point a game player now over in Germany. He could have been that here.

Late night blogging…

Not really. I’m definitely sleeping at the time this published (3 am) but there was too much other stuff going on to not blog about. In no particular order:

  • B-Sens beat writer Joy Lindsay tweeted Saturday night that the Senators have loaded up quite nicely.
  • WBS cut seven. Forwards Mikeal Bedard, Andrew Lord, David Marshall, Andrew Orpik and Alex Smigelski. Defenseman Kyle Bushee, and goaltender Patrick Killeen all got shipped to The Nail today. Analysis from Bombulie is here, as always.
  • Looks like the AHL Live site is back up and running again. I’ll be picking up my Season Pass this week.

That’s about all. If you are up at this late hour, go to bed already!

Penguins Preview (from an expert)

The last Sunday before the regular season always is good times for me because I know that Penguins beat writer Jonathan Bombulie will be rolling out his predictions and things to look out for in the upcoming AHL season. Today is one of those days.

Bombulie did it a little different this year, focusing on the talent here in Wilkes-Barre vs. a league wide preview. He listed things in a “six-pack” variety.

I said earlier that I am not going to give it all away on the blog because it is unfair to the writer and the paper. If there is a link to the print article, I’ll post it. If not, go out and get a copy of the Citizens’ Voice today.

That said, here are some of the things that Bombulie had to say:

  1. Hershey is again (sigh) the team to beat. JB had WBS slotted in at No. 5. Interestingly enough, no other Eastern Conference teams were listed in his Top 6.
  2. Some of our bright spots are veterans, no rookies and the fact that Hershey is down a bit.
  3. Trouble spots include depth at center, size (Sterling / Connor / Collins aren’t exactly giants) and goaltending. (3a, a mention of “Hershey being Hershey” also)
  4. Contributions from Joey Haddad and Casey Pierro-Zabotel. In my opinions, fish or cut bait years for both.
  5. Brad Thiessen. Told Bombulie his goal is to be the best goaltender in the AHL this year. Giddyup.

There was a spotlight version all on it’s own featuring pieces on Brett Sterling, Andrew Hutchinson, Ryan Craig and Alain Nasreddine. All will be huge, huge keys to success in Wilkes-Barre Township this season.

Nice Q&A with head coach John Hynes, who is a classical music buff.

Overall, fine work by Jonathan. I’m going to question him at the October 11 booster club meeting regarding some of the content. Such as, what are the odds of Norfolk, Charlotte and Binghamton having any success this year and contending for a Calder Cup.

This week, Bombulie sits down with Tom Grace on Monday, Alain Nasreddine on Tuesday, Jeff Barrett on Wednesday and Brad Thiessen on Thursday. The season prediction (always a favorite of mine) is Friday and the preview of the Hershey game is Saturday. Check that out.

The next one counts…

I spent my Saturday night traversing to Hershey to take in the final exhibition game of the WBS Penguins preseason. A 5-1 loss. Braden Holtby started and played all 60 for the Bears. Stopped everything he saw. The one shot he didn’t see was a Jason DeSantis shot because he was screened. There was bad blood. So, your typical Bears / Pens tilt on a Saturday night.

I was able to snag these two pictures you will see after the jump: Read more of this post
